Nice and clear instructions on a replacing the steam boiler sight glass. As you note, the glass on each end thins out over time, and becomes somewhat brittle. I generally replace mine about every 3 years or so. Some people actually put a sight glass blow down valve at the bottom to facilitate drainage.

Can't get the glass out without breaking it or turning the valve. Like it is too long. Do I just break it to get it out then cut the new one a little shorter?

Super informative, I think I (...you...but Imma take credit) saved my sister and her husband literally 6 grand. My spider sense was tingling when I was talking to em today and they said the gas controller wasn't throwing errors on any of the zones (it sounded like) and the boiler was still structurally sound...speaking of which, I always thought Rheem was alright but my buddy just had a failure (the worst kind -- leak) out of warranty. Is there a more "industrial" solution, even if it costs double or triple (2 or 3 grand) more? 30 or 40 gallons-ish. She has a 3 year old and doesn't want to have to deal with the mental overhead of "is this shit gonna fail"? Like basically, "here sis, take this Ingersoll Rand instead of this Milwaukee"
Lathe nerd timeee-WD40 means water displacement, and the 40 means literally it was the nerds in lab coats 40th attempt. It's great for things like preventing pulling moisture out of the air and forming rust on grey cast iron machine tools, but if some idiot spec'd a fitting out of anything that can rust, that joker deserves to lose his job. Glass transitions into various phases, at various temperatures, based on various chemical compositions (when meth was super popular, Pyrex could get up to like 2k deg F or some shit) but even standard shitty Chinese glass makes it past 1k deg F before slumping begins. I think it's all that particle fines which abrades against the glass, not the heat but i duno

An old timer told me to get the glass on the cutter and wet it for a crisper, chipless cut. Always worked for me, now I'm the old timer, 70, and still at it part time

@@PipeDoctor which brand would you recommend? I questioned him about Navien and he said its a good unit and has the recirculation pump built it. He said I could go Rinnai but it will be more expensive. I'm confused at this point and down to a day to decide.
