Chichen Itza was the most populous city in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. Even today, its ruins reflect a great civilization filled with architectural marvels and ancient secrets. ... Chichen Itza is also home to several cenotes (natural pits of groundwater), including the Xtoloc Cenote or “Sacred Cenote”.
It's such an amazing country...we'd only ever been right across the northern border and to Mexico City, so it's been really cool traveling around other parts of Mexico. It's all so different!
Thanks 😊 ya, we didn't know quite what to expect before we arrived...but it was a very welcome sight after such a long and hot day of traveling. We still dream about that pool with the ocean views in the background 😍
We'll have to look into those! I think we're going to try and hit up a few more pyramids near Mexico City now that we're back in Mexico. We just can't get over how many ruins there are in this country!
awesome video, you two. thanks so much for the fantastic footage and history of these places. great choices of bnb's, they really are so authentic & lovely....even the little motel was cute. thanks for sharing. loving adventuring with you!! pam in texas
I have been there. Was so hot I thought I was gonna faint, about 110 degrees. All of our pictures were sweating. People were sacrificed at the top of the temple.
great video when you said about the big hole and how one person was supposed to have climbed out. first thing popped in to me head was Bruce Wayne climbing out of the pit and the legend has it he became the.... Batman
today I stumbled across a guitar lesson cause I needed to know the chords to a song called "broadripple is burning" I was like wow this guy sounds like Eric, from the endless adventure... but then I thought it can't be him because of the haircut... (I haven't been around long enough to see you with the old haircut) then I looked at the channels most recent video and it's you!!! What a coincidence... you have a brilliant taste in music and I never knew you could sing so well and play guitar! Cheers!
How funny and random!! Sadly I can't travel with my guitar so I don't get to play as much as I used to. Glad you liked it though! Margot's one of our favorites :)
Whoa! That must have been quite an adventure to fit the drive and exploring the pyramids into just one day! Originally we were just going to stop in our our way across the peninsula, but we're glad we stayed overnight.
Fifteen years ago, when I was in Chichen Itza (aka Chicken Pizza), we were able to climb to observation deck on the main temple. It's 90 feet up and it scared the $%^& out of everybody! (they had an ambulance around the corner for all those that fell) Unfortunately, people are no longer able to go up there. Regardless, it's an amazing place!
In many other ruins you can still climb the temples. One place I recommend is Uxmal. That place is beautiful and it also has many other things that Chichen Itza doesn't... to be fair I like Uxmal better than Chichen Itza and the temple is a lot more beautiful. I think you can still climb one of the pyramids there. Something funny about the Yucatan Peninsula is that it's littered with mayan ruins; they are everywhere. If I walk a few blocks from where I live I can visit one ruin. Since they are protected by law, they couldn't build houses there. So there are houses surrounding them. Nothing crazy, just some big house. But still, pretty cool.
went to chichen itza in the old days when you were still allowed to climb to the top.......did it in the middle of the day, damn near killed me lol,,,,,sat at the top and tipped a bottle of water over my head...worth it for the view though
Just call me peanut butter, because I am #Jelly of those fantastic views you have from your travelers compound!!! Finally got a chance to catch up with you guys today. Those Mayan ruins looked epic! With weather like that, I hope you packed enough sunscreen!!! Stay safe!
Oh man, the weather's been killer! We've never sweat this much in our lives! Luckily the sunscreen's been working for the most part though ☀️ I guess we'll take borderline heatstroke to see ancient ruins and amazing beaches though 😊
If you guys ever go back to the area. I HIGHLY suggest you go to Ek Balam. They were the most incredible Mayan ruins I saw down there. And not as many people so we kind of had it to ourselves. Bonus is you can still climb them too. They had the best carvings that have yet been discovered in the area. I suggest www.genesisretreat.com/ to stay. The lady who owns the place is amazing and moved there to help teach the local children and help rescue the stray dogs down there. Our little family room we rented you walked right out into the little natural water pool. I truly can not recommend this place enough. There is also a nearby cenote.
It was almost 100 that day with high humidity...definitely not ideal for being outside, but with lots of water and sunscreen we made it work 😊 I think the jaguar was about 200 pesos 🐆
Good video but on a tour the guide said that the mayans had a floor for the ball hoop and the hoops were only like a foot of the floor so they dont hit it 25 feet in the air
Ya it's crazy! We found out that there were apparently different tiers you went to after you died and if you won the game, you automatically went to the top tier (or at least one of the top tiers...we're not 100% sure). But still, it's hard to rationalize drowning in exchange for a better afterlife...such a different lifestyle and way of thinking back then!
Religion is a powerful force around the world not much different than Christians who willingly get crucified (as in the Phillippines) or Buddhist who light themselves on fire.
When the air temperature is hot the word isn't caliente. In Spanish you say, "Hace mucho calor!" the literal translation of which is "make much heat" but that's how it's said. Spicy food is caliente, temperature is calor.
I'm guessing neither of them live in México. Let's check the official "Diccionario de la lengua española" by the Real Academia Española: Caliente: dle.rae.es/?id=6nrQsN4 Picante: dle.rae.es/?id=SscF91J
A dictionary completely in Spanish is spectacularly unhelpful. Even Google Translate says that "It's hot" is said, "hace calor." According to Google the word caliente has more to do with sexy/hot people or randy/horny behavior, NOT weather.
calichef1962 hace calor means the same thing as caliente, but it'sonly used for weather. in any other temperature context only Caliente is used like El café está caliente (the coffee is hot). yes, Caliente has other meanings also. I've heard it being used as a translation for good looking person, ONLY in the US, though. In Mexico it means horny or sexually obsesed depending on the tone you say it. I'm not trying to antagonize here. It just happens Spanish it's my first language and I've lived in Mexico for most of my life.
Thanks so much! We have a good friend whose family's from Israel, so we've been talking about visiting with him one day. It sounds like a really amazing place!
We were pretty surprised by the number of vendors inside too. :( I think the key is definitely getting there early...most hadn't been set up when we first arrived so it felt a bit less touristy.

- Pretty cool place! Mexico has been on my list of places to go for wayyy too long..
It's such an amazing country...we'd only ever been right across the northern border and to Mexico City, so it's been really cool traveling around other parts of Mexico. It's all so different!
You guys have outdone yourselves, once again! Really good video and damn, that airBnb is so beautiful💓
Thanks 😊 ya, we didn't know quite what to expect before we arrived...but it was a very welcome sight after such a long and hot day of traveling. We still dream about that pool with the ocean views in the background 😍
Man that place in Merida looks amazing! I'd be in that pool or kitchen cooking, all day!
Ya, it was pretty magical...we didn't want to leave!
Super hermoso mexico😍👌🏻
Yep, Mexico's been blowing us away with its landscape :)
My dog attacked my phone when y'all started blowing on those whistle things 🤣😂🤣
I've never been to those pyramids, but I have been to Teotihuacan and Tula in Mexico. It's a beautiful place.
We'll have to look into those! I think we're going to try and hit up a few more pyramids near Mexico City now that we're back in Mexico. We just can't get over how many ruins there are in this country!
I´m from Mérida and I think this is a pretty good video you explained all the details pretty well
more like chicken pizza amiright
🐔🍕 4everrrr
Omg that airbnb is beautiful!
Ya, we were definitely blown away when we arrived.
That's like The Road to El Dorado! :)

awesome video, you two. thanks so much for the fantastic footage and history of these places. great choices of bnb's, they really are so authentic & lovely....even the little motel was cute. thanks for sharing. loving adventuring with you!! pam in texas
Thanks so much, Pam! We're loving exploring more of Mexico and sharing it with everyone :)
Batman
Haha exactly! I still can't believe people were able to get out...the walls were so high and steep 😮
Were there a lot of bugs and snakes there? It looks so cool to visit. What time of year did you go?
thank you
Hi traveller ..greeting from Nepal 🙏🙏
today I stumbled across a guitar lesson cause I needed to know the chords to a song called "broadripple is burning" I was like wow this guy sounds like Eric, from the endless adventure... but then I thought it can't be him because of the haircut... This is cool. We went to the ruins for a cruise excursion, but it's so much cooler to actually stay in the town.
Whoa! That must have been quite an adventure to fit the drive and exploring the pyramids into just one day! Originally we were just going to stop in our our way across the peninsula, but we're glad we stayed overnight.
We actually wish we had more time! But it was nice to be able to see the ruins even just for a bit. The drive took up almost 5 hours of our day =/
You two are so delightful
Aww, thanks 😊
Hi there i'm new! Just wanted to comment the reflection of the temple on your red shades is epic! Looks almost apocalyptic.
Welcome! We didn't notice that at first, but you're right! It's definitely a crazy reflection with the red 😎
OK, so I've been inspired by your previous videos but now I'm just plain jealous!
Haha! You should visit Chichen Itza someday! But wait until the spring or fall when you don't melt as much 😂
oh my God! whats the mystery behind the clapping of the hands? its mind blowing...
2:51 “that’s what she said” - Michael Scott
The snake is actually Kululcán, The Feathered Serpent, in the Mayan language. The Aztecs called it Quetzalcoátl.

I Climb the piramid went was a kid :)
Crazy! That would have been absolutely amazing to do!

Thought you’d like to know that AGAINST ALL ODDS with Jeff Bridges was partly filmed at the Pyramids 😀
Looks like an awesome place to stsy!
It was definitely one of our favorite houses we've stayed in. Those views were pretty unbeatable 😍 And the pool was perfect for the crazy hot days 🏊

for those of us in the rest of the world, would there be any chance of giving the temperatures in Celsius? I haven't a clue what 70F is :/

Thanks for all the recommendations! What an amazing and beautiful trip you must have had 😍
It was awesome. It was my first trip out of the country and opened my eyes.

It was almost 100 that day with high humidity...definitely not ideal for being outside, but with lots of water and sunscreen we made it work 😊 I think the jaguar was about 200 pesos 🐆

Very informative video, thank you. What time did you arrive there and start to see it getting too crowded?
Good video but on a tour the guide said that the mayans had a floor for the ball hoop and the hoops were only like a foot of the floor so they dont hit it 25 feet in the air

Doesn't seem like you have many places to sit in these ruins?
The winner got thrown in the cenote?? 🤔 Sheesh.

calichef1962 wrong! spicy food is picante. Caliente is for temperature.
That's not how it was explained to me by both my college Spanish instructor and my Mexican-born mother-in-law.
I'm guessing neither of them live in México.

Pullup
Those temples may be from southern spain, possibly pagan temples, just sayin'
When you come to Israel, you can stay with us for free !! Come do a trip here !! You will have a blast !!!!!
Thanks so much! We have a good friend whose family's from Israel, so we've been talking about visiting with him one day. It sounds like a really amazing place!
I'm not impressed.
I found chichen itza obviously beautiful but it was totally ruined by the markets and how touristy it was
We were pretty surprised by the number of vendors inside too. :( I think the key is definitely getting there early...most hadn't been set up when we first arrived so it felt a bit less touristy.
