He conveniently fails to acknowledge that corona virus RaTG13 from the bat cave he references has 4% genetic difference from pandemic SARS CoV-2 ( including genetic differences of the spike protein) making his lab leak of this referenced virus highly implausible. 4% is a huge amountnof genetic difference more than that between humans and chimps. Metzl is associated with The Atlantic Council promotes Western leadership and has its own biases and economic interests. Very good explanation of the theory of the Covid escaping through a lab accident. Metzel is one of many researchers who believe in this theory. Wasn’t the NIH involved in the funding of this lab?
@15:40 "oh and by the way everything I'm saying about how there needs to be a US investigation? Nvm all that, pet sleeping dogs lie, it could start WW3."
I can see where someone working at the lab took an infected animal that was to be destroyed and sold it on the wet market. Average Chinese person will do almost anything to make money. No problem.
Ole Hari did an excellent job on this interview. He asked great questions and his facial expression matched his concerns. I’m usually a big critic of his interview style but I see he’s improving. Don’t throw him away just yet ..... Hari you are speaking for the world , for all people when you are given this platform. Plz be more engaging on all topics because you never know who’s listening. This virus was not an accident . It was a bio weapon to eliminate a certain percentage of the population. Even if you have been fully vaccinated, wear your mask and wash your hands frequently. Again, great interview Hari .
So the virus which was also already naturally occurring was then collected and carried away to be studied at this lab for this purpose. So it’s either a really bad mistake that was further muddied by its probable stewing in that giant market of broken and sickly animals. Perhaps it was originally taken to the market by a mistake by those trying to find out more about it and once they realized they had been given this golden opportunity for culpable deniability in the wet market theory, that’s the story they stuck with in order to save face. Okay, it’s totally possible. What is more important for everyone to understand is that regardless of who failed at proper biohazard precautions at some point, the real problem is that these animals in the wild have been encroached on by humans so much that they, through no fault on their part, are now not only at risk of becoming vectors themselves but have also been given so little consideration, for so long that has become a case of poetic justice. This last straw moment in a long line of disrespectful actions finally rang all the right bells for a real world Pandora’s Box to open up and forever more be a scourge to the one animal species that pathologically ignores the signs of imbalance and thinks that they are above any repercussions for this incredible disrespect of other animals or environments. The correct answer to where this pandemic originated is right here in our belief that we are superior to every other organism and that it gives us the right to be ignorant of the damage that we do. We are driving the climate chaos and we are going to have to pay for this sooner or later. Personally, for me, the most terrifying new emerging threat from this warming world is not viruses or bacteria but the other Kingdom which is rarely spoken of and currently not well understood. I am talking about the Fungi and the horrific and as yet incurable forms of mycosis that are virtually indestructible and very good at traveling in the air as spores. One only has to do a search for the black mold deaths which are killing recovering COVID-19 patients as it lands on everything and is omnipresent in humid climates naturally already but are deadly when they infect people with traumatized immune systems as well as healthy people. Our medical community is not prepared, informed, or even equipped to provide medical treatment for this. Right now, today, if you are unlucky enough to get this you are going to die. And this is just one of millions of known and unknown species that are evolving to survive in a hot moist climate. The only reason we’ve been spared from most of them so far is that only a few are able to survive and thrive at our normal internal body temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. But as the planet becomes hotter the fungi, which have been on earth from the start and seen millions of species come and go, will evolve to survive and suddenly our one real defense will begin to disappear. We really really need to wake up. Otherwise it’s bedtime for humanity.
This is a good interview. Metzl is not a biologist of any kind, but he has a PhD in History from Oxford and a JD from Harvard, so he's certainly smart enough to ask intelligent layman's questions which is what he is doing here. However, the bottom line is that the question of whether the virus originated in the lab or the wild is a red herring. It just doesn't matter. As to whether SARS-Covid2 is the worst epidemic in a hundred years, well that depends on which country you are talking about. It was the worst in the US for sure, but not in China, S. Korea, Taiwan, or Viet Nam among others. The reason is that those countries carried out highly effective programs at the national level to suppress the virus. They were able to do so, because they had effective governments and because they were surveilling China for the emergence of new pathogens without waiting for either the WHO or China to alert them. They had plans, put them into action, and succeeded. The countries who did experience the worst pandemic death rates in a hundred years were those who did not surveil China, did not have prepared plans for dealing with a pandemic, and did not carry out any national plan effectively, namely, the US. the UK, Brazil and the countries of Europe with a few exceptions. The US had had an office of the CDC in Beijing with forty-seven employees including epidemiologists prior to 2016, but that program was shutdown by the Trump administration in 2017. All of the Western governments who failed, did so because they weren't watching China even after SARS in 2003 and MERS in 2015. But, in fact, they didn't even have to conduct their own surveillance. They could have just rung up the S. Korean Disease Control and Prevention Agency every day and asked, "See anything out of China yet?" But they didn't do that. The origin of the virus doesn't matter and never determined the outcome. The competent public health experts were able to spot the emergence and respond effectively. Incompetent governments who did nothing and let the virus run wild have only themselves to blame. Scientifically, the question of origin is a legitimate subject of inquiry, but politically it is just an attempt to blame the Commies for the failures of out incompetent governments in the West.

All evidence shows the virus could have originated from Fort Detrick. The vaping pneumonia deaths in August 2019, the pneumonia deaths in Greenspring Retirement Villsge in Aug-Sep 2019, the fact that 4.6 million Americans had covid19 antibodies in Decembet 2019. Why is no American discussinh all these facts? Also, 280 American soldiers took part in the Wuhan Military Gamed and 5 of them were so ill they had to be taken home separately in Octobet 2019. It was only on 1 Dec 2019 that Chinese doctors discocered the new virus.a WHO has already investigated Wuhan lab. Now it is time a WHO team investigate FortDetrick. You are hoping to overthrow Xi Jinping and China's peaceful rise huh? That is what is motivating this latest accusation huh?
Every interview with Sreenivasan I watch, from since I first saw him on PBS, he is NEVER able to get deeper than the obvious questions. He NEVER seems able to parse out or guide the guests to divulge or reveal anything that CLARIFIES THE ISSUE discussed. Most ineffective interviewing technique. Very poor. For investigative journalism, his questions seem generally cursory and surface deep. Jamie Metzl SAID NOTHING NEW, just rambling on, taking (and again, being allowed) way too much time to drag on minor points. He sheds little light, except to say that "this is my theory" and the reference to the miners contracting illness from exposure to the bat cave. ZERO.
"It's critically important to know the truth..." I'm afraid, sir, that you have a limited understanding of geosociopolitics and human nature... the truth is subjective and sometimes antiproductive...a Quixotic quest to find a cause can, unfortunately, lead one down the rabbit hole of 'blame' and won't always put you on the path to a rational and constructive solution. 🙏(this comment was not sponsored by the CCP😂)
Hari is so hilarious, acting like precisely what Jamie is saying about the “investigation” wasn’t known and reported in independent media for the past year or more. So sad that public television has become such a joke.
Sometimes as an interviewer, you have to ask the obvious questions and pretend you do not know the answer. Why? Because you're asking questions people in the audience probably have, and you don't to ever act like you already know the answer, because it defeats the point. You are the interviewer, not the one being interviewed. It seems to me based on his body language that he knows more than he says, he's just focused on being a good interviewer.

This was disappointing commentary. For instance, "Gain of function is not really a scientific term." Search PubMed: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=Gain+of+function&sort=date&size=200.
Creditable assessment from a decent scientist.
I trust WHO and PBS less now than I did before this interview.
🤔🤔🤔
👍🏽
ZERO.
Maybe this is why this interview has rubbed me the wrong way.
Orange Man Bad! Told us this! Well thats just nonsense! Orange Man Bad!
Mmm
"It's critically important to know the truth..." I'm afraid, sir, that you have a limited understanding of geosociopolitics and human nature... the truth is subjective and sometimes antiproductive...a Quixotic quest to find a cause can, unfortunately, lead one down the rabbit hole of 'blame' and won't always put you on the path to a rational and constructive solution. 🙏(this comment was not sponsored by the CCP😂)
Oh, God, this inane backpedaling is pathetic
What backpedaling? both theories haven't been confirmed yet.
"Independent media" is a hell of a euphemism for "right-wing propaganda."
@@AE-bm4no what he’s supposed to say is MSM, including us, got it wrong and ought never to have repeatedly reported that it was a “debunked conspiracy theory,” which it never was, and we ought never to have censored credible scientists who said from the outset that both natural and lab leak hypotheses needed to be investigated. It never should have been politicized anymore than masking was.
The instinctive robin ethically belong because warm interstingly shock aside a boundless rectangle. distinct, absorbing lock
A theory with no evidence is just that - a theory. We need to move away from this 'I have a feeling' being presented as fact.
Talking point to focus on China away from domestic issues
That’s not how science works unfortunately 🦠
