@@RayCuts Ray. Respectfully. My wife enjoys a vegan based diet. I have increased my vegatable, fruit and grain intake and decreased meat consumption. Purely to promote a healthier lifestyle. Now how this increases my defenses against COVID I have no idea. But I will most definitely tell you I am not willing to rely soley on my healthy choices of diet intake to protect me around a crowd of coughing, sneezing and hacking people in a stuffy office room without my face mask on. My anxiety level will most definatley increase! For me my face mask is another shield of protection. The other "shields" (if they can be referred to as) may include the following: healthy diet including vitamins C & D Reg exercise stress free lifestyle Reg & handwashing and refraining from shaking other people's hands and getting outdoors as much as possible. These I have been practicing for years now at the advice of my personal physician- way before I ever head of a SARS or COVID. I attribute the above to why I have not caught the flu for decades and have not pursued getting a flu shot. But how much of the same above contributes to me safely navigating around catching the COVID as well as the Delta varient, is beyond me. But I will absolutely tell you that I mostly attribute my avoiding the disease, is from wearing my face mask as a reg staple of being out in public, as well as assuming that if you don't live with me in my home- you are a candidate for it. And I want those out there around me to stay safe, keep a respectful distance and assume that I may be a candidate for it as well. Is it a lifestyle that promotes fear? You have to judgr. Changing my diet lead to no allergies and getting joint movements I haven't had in years. When I read, watch, and witness chronic diseases being reversed and eliminated. Why not subscribe to that and share the information. I thank god he scared me into the nutritional information instead of being scared of a human near me. Nor does chronic diseases. I am not an anti vaxxer and have encouraged most to take the vaccine cause they are not going to change their lifestyles. If wearing a mask reduces the possibility of breathing out particles or in ( not aerosols) it would seem like it is worth protecting ourselves. It is hard to make a generalization ( as in the interview) and apply it to all possible scenarios. Rather than saying that masks don't work, it would be much more useful to know how to make them work i.s KN95, double masks, etc. As a 75 y/o male I am again locked down to protect myself from the unvaccinated.
He didn't say that masks don't work. He said that CLOTH masks don't work very well. He said N95 and KN95 masks are extremely effective. Unlike at the beginning of the pandemic, they are pretty easy to get right now, so I suggest ordering some so you don't have to be stuck at home all of the time.
Anything that slows the velocity and quantity of aerosols or particles is better than nothing. I can imagine a person who has covid coughing into a cloth mask versus no mask and the proportion of virus expelled is going to be less. As we here have had to wear masks because of fires is very instructive. At first, we did not have masks so we wore bandanas, which we not all that helpful, then we got surgical masks which after a few days turned brown but we could still smell the fires, then we got N95 masks and the orders were gone. This is a grayscale, not a black and white issue. Anything that reduced the spread is better than nothing. Back then there was no politics about masking because we knew they helped.

He didn't say that mask wearing doesn't work. He said that when in shared breathing space with a person infected with covid cloth masks work for about 15 minutes, surgical masks work for approximately 5 minutes longer and n95/kn95 masks work for 25 hours. Vaccinated people are likely more of a risk of contagion to you, they can still have covid and can be contagious, often asymptomatic or with unnoticeable mild symptoms and often do not mask. Does a procedure mask under a well-fitting, multi-layered cloth mask provide adequate protection to delta? We were told by experts that it approximates an N95, but that was prior to the delta variant.
Yes, it does, roughly speaking - they are cumulatively beneficial - think of it as layers of screen like you use on your deck... one extra layer unless you intentionally sync the pattern up will become more and more impermeable - until eventually with enough layers (I think 32 for my stupid lab project, I did) you can even make it impermeable to liquids. Now that said, wearing two of the same type (fabric in most contexts) are likely going to "pattern sync" more easily.

Like he said, it's aerosolized. If you can smell a cigarette 20 feet away, then someone's cough 20 feet away can potentially hit you with some particles. Your vaccination status, your immune system, and the viral load of the infected person all affect your chances of infection and/or illness. His exact words were that a properly fitted N95 mask will allow you to spend 25 hours in a situation where you'd be infected after 20 minutes with a cloth mask. The odds of a breakthrough infection if you're fully vaccinated is low, and risk of serious illness is even lower. You should be more worried about the flu if you're fully vaccinated.
@@frankvonfrauner If you're vaccinated, the problem isn't so much protecting yourself... It is trying to protect the unvaccinated around you. @@derekpederson1952 that's what some people continue to say, but new data has emerged. The CDC director said on a Fox News interview a couple of weeks ago that hospitals are under-reporting breakthrough cases, also that breakthrough cases stopped being counted May 1 (unless they caused hospitalization and death) so the actual number and frequency of breakthrough cases is entirely and completely unknown. Also, if you just take a recent incident as an example...a Carnival cruise last week had 27 cases and all were vaccinated. That seems like a lot to me. And the Cape Cod incident where 496 people tested positive, 74% were vaccinated. I personally don't think the "breakthrough cases are rare" narrative is truth at this point. He's also sort of misrepresenting what cloth masks are good for. No, they don't help a whole lot if you're sitting in a room with poor ventilation where there is significant amounts of the virus in the air. However, they are really quite effective in reducing spread between people who say a few words to each other or are otherwise in some contact in a space which isn't viral soup. If you happen to be infected, you aren't blowing a concentrated amount of virus in the other person's face, and visa versa. Just like distancing. Anyways... Mask and open the windows
@@travcollier That's actually not true either. If you say a few words to a positive case, you're not deemed q close contact. You have to be with the person for over 15mins
@@popland1977 The "close contact" classification/critera are highly imperfect. They have more to do with what is somewhat easier to keep track of than the specifics of exposure. There are just too many unknown variables (airflow patterns being a big one), so the simple 15 min rule is used instead. And that isn't even used a lot of places. Local schools here (FL) had kids testing positive every few days but normally only a couple of other kids were identified as in "close contact"... theres less protection the more air can leak in, (looser fit) and the less particles get trapped in the fabric.. lighter cloths def provide some protection but only really when everyone wears them. it has to be a group effort and were apparently not capable. to just protect your own self, use a n95 not kn95 that fits tightly and filters out most or all particles below a certain size. they definitely make them for kids now. look up companies in the new york times they did an article listing american n-95 producers good luck

Already happened: One of Dr. Osterholms podcasts was recently taken down because the YT algorithm detected *certain words.* He was talking about and rebutting various incorrect claims. This is the real issue with current corporatized censorship. Its being done by algorithms not people. The reviews are being done by algorithms not people. There is one way to deal with this I know of. Rick Beato runs a music channel that I watch and has managed to clear a number of copyright strikes that weren't actually from the artists. They were from corporations representing the artists. What he has found is that by kicking up a storm on social media and using the right hastags the actual humans get involved. Apparently there are real humans looking for sudden trends involving their corporations name in hashtags and they are (in part) on the prowl for BAD publicity. He's had strikes removed in as little as 3 hours.
Not sure why. He was clear : wear your N95 mask properly and you'll be fine. Otherwise, you're just putting yourself at risk for no reason. Though gene pools and voting are affected. On second thought, go play Covid Roulette.

The Sinovac, Chinese vaccine, was administered to a doctor in a country outside of the States, and the doctor will be coming to Florida, for an eight week test prep for the USMLE step1. The doctor had the first Sinovac shot in March and 14 days later she took her second vaccine in My question??? Does the doctor need a booster for the Sinovac or be administrated another vaccine that is available in the States, for protection.
I'm seeing a problem with his analogy about the smoking ban...he said it was 70% who didn't smoke and 30% who did, so business went up. Currently 50.7% are fully vaccinated. And a recent CBS poll showed that 27% of vaccinated people respect the decision of the unvaccinated to not get vaccinated. It could be argued that a good percentage of that 27% would not support mandates that would make people lose their jobs. If you look at the numbers that way, it could be supposed that 70% do not support mandates. I think businesses will actually be losing business from mandates. If this is an accurate assessment, it would mean that, actually, mandates are unpopular. I am wondering if that is why Gavin Newsom is literally hanging by a thread in the recall race. He should be well ahead in such a blue state. I am concerned and wondering about the political implications going forward.
As a native New Orleanian, I am glad you are enjoying the GOOD things that my former city(moved since hurricane Katrina) has to offer. I miss it; now living in Baton Rouge. I especially miss the great food from there. Baton Rouge tries to replicate New Orleans cuisine, but its not the same. Enjoy! Wish the state didn't have this health problem.
Fit testing with an N-95 respirator involves wearing it in a hood snd they spray a nasty smell in it. If you smell it it doesn’t fit. I can’t smell anything in the grocery store with mine on. It's no wonder we can't get people to take any precautions with experts all over the map on the issues. Get your act together people and come out with ONE message. I'm sick of this.
Curious what Dr. Osterholm thinks about previously infected people getting or needing the vaccine. If exempt, will the previously infected be required to prove they had Covid. I think a logical extension of this argument would also apply to Influenza.
we are not expecting the delta variant to be the last if the way this virus has been behaving is to be the criteria. then there is the warning against vaccinating in the heat of the pandemic by Geert Vanden Bossche right here in youtube. one of the parameters he mentions is clearly happening - infections in younger and younger people. but the vaccines have been given and cannot be undone. what to do now...blessings to all
Few quick questions, What of you've had covid? Why would you need a vaccine? What about the animal reservoir of covid? How will we keep variants from evolving from animals and possibly infecting humans? Considering there's no plausible way of vaccinating the entire world,it would seem these variants will keep propagating, correct? Thanks for your clarification on masks..
A suggestion for anyone watching this post. The best way to make a good decision about your health is to consult, with complete and total open-mindedness with your Doctor. If this does not make sense to you, go ahead and call your plumber when your daughter is struggling with Math.
How about we say something about Sweden? There were no mask mandates and no lockdowns and they are perfectly fine. Going forward, most European high income and rich countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, etc.) made it illegal for any public or private organization to enforce any type of vaccines (so over there no employer can say you have to take some shot to work here, same for school entry, or doctors or nurses - they are not required to take any form of vaccine, not even a flu shot). How about you worry about the fact that according to CDC, 70% of Americans are overweighted, including obese? How about you worry about the food you serve in schools (burgers, sweets and soda) instead of masks? How can companies mandate a vaccine and lecture us about health when they have snacks and sodas full of sugar, unhealthy fats and dangerous chemical preservatives that they serve or sell in the office? When was the last time those employers talked about diet, exercising, percentage of body fat, weight and counting your calories? Ohh, wait, that would be offensive. So, again, how can we explain that several rich European countries do not give any legal power to any type of organization to mandate any vaccine and US does and their population is not healthier? The US we know lectures other countries about freedom? Masks are controversial, but no organization (hospitals, elderly care units, schools, universities, private employers, etc.) should have any power to mandate any form of vaccine! Let’s stop being brainwashed and let’s pressure the US legislators to amend the current regulations and make it illegal for any US governmental or private organization/entity to enforce any type of vaccine! This is not an anti-vaccination movement, it is rather about giving common sense freedom to everyone. It’s enough that there is no universal healthcare in the US and that all states except for Wyoming have employment at will, at least that’s what we can do to treat the employees more decently and not condition their right of work or study on some vaccines! Let’s be decent human beings and improve ourselves in terms of physical and mental health before worrying about what others are doing.

The other "shields" (if they can be referred to as) may include the following:
healthy diet including vitamins C & D
Reg exercise
stress free lifestyle
Reg & handwashing and refraining from shaking other people's hands
and getting outdoors as much as possible.
If wearing a mask reduces the possibility of breathing out particles or in ( not aerosols) it would seem like it is worth protecting ourselves.

@@r8chlletters Yes, and unlike at the beginning of the pandemic, they're pretty easy to get right now.

As Dr. Osterholm says, if you can smell cigarette smoke through the mask you're not protected. That's that.
All the best.
Finally someone says body weight is a risk factor!
The experts have been saying this for a year and a half.
Well, I have heard this since day one.
Obesity is a factor not weight…so if someone has a higher body fat ratio that is going to be the primary comorbidity. Viral load is of course what dictates severity above everything. That’s why healthy 20 and 30 somethings are now in ICUs with total organ failure…
Chronic diseases and co-morbidities fuel the worse ends of covid. Plant based alkaline diet WILL DO what the vaccines do plus this diet will do what the vaccine CAN'T: PREVENT AND REVERSE CHRONIC DISEASES. Which vaccine can do that? And more importantly, which vaccine doesnt need more vaccines to work?
@@r8chlletters the more dead useless cells in the body, the worse the viral load in ANY virus, not just covid. Chronic diseases and co-morbidities do more damage with covid then the vaccines prevent it. In fact, vaccines are not strong at all when one has too many chronic diseases and co-morbidities. Western and bad diets added to the pandemic and is taking away from what was a perfect solution in vaccines. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏽♂️

But the numbers did stayed down???? No. Mask mandates are a failed policy.

Thank you thank you. People need to hear this!
A double layer cloth face mask with a M14 sheet in between worn tightly is different from a single layer of fabric worn loosely. I wish he had clarified ‘cloth’ face covering….
You’re right that the two cloth masks are not the same, but neither of them provides protection against the delta variant. POSSIBLY-and I’ve asked Dr. Osterholm to answer the question-whether a multi-layer, well-fitting cloth mask worn over a surgical mask affords adequate protection. I do know that without a tight fit, nobody is protected.
Too many variables. KISS (keep it simple silly!) dictates a standard people can actually follow. I find the KN95s are more comfortable, lighter, and best of all consistently safer than anything I could sew.
Couldn't you get delta from a vaccinated or an unvaccinated person?
Isn't it more important that you are vaccinated than the other patrons so if you get it you will be less likely to need hospitalization and so on...
A month has passed and I still stand by this criticism.
Edit: About a year has passed and I stand by my criticism.
Vaccinated people are far less likely to spread, because they’re far less likely to get it.
And since we don't know how many breakthrough cases are occurring we cannot claim that we are "far less likely to get it"
@@mbrights3158 No, the data still shows a massive overrepresentation of cases among unvaccinated, even in countries that were initially cited by vaccine-skeptical crowd, the effect of the vaccines became much more clear as the Delta variant spread further (i.e. Israel). "A sobering scientific analysis published Friday found that three-quarters of the people infected during an explosive COVID-19 outbreak fueled by the delta variant were fully vaccinated. Glad you are taking all the necessary precautions to stay safe! Life is precious!
@@travcollier very true too! Those two things are the key to slowing the spread.
Obviously absurd, but for practical and political reasons, they weren't going to have entire classrooms of students do quarantine whenever one person in the class got COVID.

Actually it's, time, concentration and susceptibility of host that determines whether or not you'll get the disease.
This is so discouraging. I live in a country where vaccine access is limited. About 1% 🥺
Can you get n95/kn95 masks? What's discouraging is that the vaccines aren't effective against the Delta variant. It's very encouraging that properly fit n95/kn95 masks will protect a wearer in the same room as an infected person for 25 hours. While I don't know much about it, perhaps look into ivermectin, I've read about countries with low vaccine availability having some success with it.
@@the_motherlord I'm not sure that I can get those types of masks easily. I haven't seen them on the open market, only surgical and cloth masks. This is a struggling nation generally.
Doctors here discourage self medicating , but we are encouraging the use of the herbal preparation of Warbugia Ugandiasis extract. Anecdotally, it seems to help people.
@@the_motherlord actually,I think he said that vaccines _are_ effective in preventing serious sickness caused by delta. As expected, vaccines don't prevent infection. They just reduce the extent to which it can make you sick.
@@politereminder6284 as I understand it, you are correct, the vaccines do not prevent infection and transmission but seem to reduce serious illness and reduce death. But it still can happen. Perhaps you may find n95 or kn95 masks online? The ivermectin is available without a prescription in some countries, perhaps check availability where you have or seen if it can be ordered online?
I feel awful knowing there are vaccines expiring in my country because people won't take them, while vaccine supply is so limited elsewhere. I'm so sorry
She meant, "...spreading the fear."
The reason people hesitate is the mixed messages. We were told we could go back to normal. Nope. Told masks don't work, do work, don't work, cloth good, cloth not good.
Told we can't fly overseas even if vaccinated.
I care about relatives, but they are in another country that I'm not allowed to travel to. Whether I'm vaccinated or not.
Until this is okay:
1. Vaccinate
2. Fly with an N95 mask and goggles.
3. Take a test on landing.
4. Don't have to quarantine.
I won't get an unapproved vaccine.
Fine. We’ll deal with you via passports. Because you will not be allowed to endanger other people.

Masks work, duh 🙄 Ladies masks can match our wardrobe, we can step up the eye makeup and be mysterious. Guys do your thing and don’t forget to look deeply into a ladies eyes. Love to all - peace to all
Ok Grandmother, we know his credentials. What are yours? Why do you know so much more than him. (Here's a hint for you. YOU DON'T)
@@ghjcmo ya wanna entertain us with the story of the time you thought you had a credential but then realized you dont know what that means? im excited
@@possumofantikka8160 What are you going on about? I have a hint for you as well, you're nowhere near as clever as you think you are. And where did I say I have the knowledge? I said Dr. Osterholm is the expert and almost surely knows more than all of us here combined. But by all means, make your little snide remarks and don't listen to people who actually know what they're talking about.
He’s telling the many millions of ladies who bought dozens of masks with various patterns-florals etc, to match their outfits, that they were misled...they don’t actually work. Oh well, they’ll get over it.
@@mbrights3158 I don't know that they will get over it, it's been so beat into everyone's head over the last 18 months, to point where it's become almost a religion for some people. Meanwhile people are going about their days thinking they have protection when if fact they really have very little. God only knows how many people got infected or passed on an infection based on bad information. But I'm sure politicians, news media outlets, and government bureaucrats will never be held accountable for this big lie.
Dr. Michael Osterholm is an AMAZING communicator. I hope he appears in more interviews!
