Sorry for the late response to this video, I had originally had this list done yet I had do some last minute shopping that evening.
Coincidently, I had originally posted "Caravanserai" and "On The Corner" on my Facebook page before I even knew the both albums were celebrating their album releases that same day.

I was 18 in 1972 so I was out buying these albums, and going to the gigs watching most of these bands. A big thanks to everyone who took part in the show, which is probably my favourite ever show.

I was 14 in 1972. I came home one night from partying with my friends. I turned on the TV and the show The Midnight Special was on . This band was playing and the singer was wearing a long cape. His face was painted and he had bat wings coming out from his shoulder blades. I was thinking who is this? It was Genesis performing Watcher of the Skies. From that moment on I became a huge fan!

Great LIST! I saw Gentle Giant open for Jethro Tull in Germany on the Aqualung tour. I never saw them again, but I was impressed with the sound they made. I've just downloaded the two albums mentioned on the top 5 lists. I've seen YES, Jethro Tull, Genesis, and ELP over the years. Now I have some others to discover. I LOVE Light As A Feather!

Time In The Prog Seat is always time well spent. Thanks to everyone - even those who 'mailed in' their choices for their lists and discussion. '72 was the end of my junior year and start of my senior year of high school and as has probably been mentioned on other SoT episode comment boards, the top three would have to be Trilogy by ELP, Close To The Edge by Yes and Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull. Each of these was bought when released and played almost daily during those years and quite often since then. Thick As A Brick is probably the one pulled the most frequently for listening after all these years so will give it top spot today but love all these albums. This group and SoT have put me onto some of the Italian prog which is still only a few years old with me but quite enjoyable. Thanks, gentlemen, for your time and discussion.

Love this show! I do wonder how many of the panelists were at least 15 when prog rock was at their commercial peak? It seems as though these are often retrospective analyses of great albums by bands who never sold well, or at least didn't do so until later in the decade. I suspect that if these were picked at the time, the top five would include Trilogy, CttE, and TaaB. Yes, I realize that commercial success does not equate to quality, but there had to be a reason why those first three bands sold out arenas while most of the others sold out clubs and struggled to fill theaters. Looking back, it is one thing to hear, say, ItCotCK when it was released versus hearing it for the first time in the 80s or 90s. Being there shapes the context of the times...

Interesting show, I only came across it today. Great year for prog and rock in general. My favourite prog album in 1972 would have to be Thick As A Brick but barely I would say followed by the two Zappa albums.
Then Close To The Edge and Trilogy from Yes and Elp Respectably and Argus by the most underrated band of them all Wishbone Ash and as Ken rightly said they are a prog band. Gentle Giant and Genesis I never could get into them as they bore me, bought some of their albums but they don't do it for me.

All the suggestions show what a great era/ year it was for inventive music. ‘Argus’ is a wonderful album, can’t believe it wasn’t everyone’s choice. Two absolute classics by the mighty Gentle Giant too.

Thank you for the Barry Barlow shout out for his work on TAAB!!! Any other drummer and the album would still be good, but Barlow's style and creativity raises it a couple of notches. I'm always amazed how Barlow doesn't get the love he deserves when people discuss brick. I would also shout out john Evan's work. So much of the studio album has his hammond organ out front with martin barre buried in the mix. When I saw them do it live, after the accoustic opening, i wasn't expecting barre's guitar to explode out of the sound system the way it did -- which in a sold out MSG just rocked the walls of the place.

You guys are the epitome of great taste. 1972 was a fantastic year for Prog, most of the seminal bands with the exception of King Crimson and VDGG recorded their "magnum opus". So many prog bands recorded some impressive albums, not only the usual suspects, some well known and some obscure bands. A Top 5 for such an impressive year comes seriously short. My Top 25 Prog Albums + 5 Fusion Albums in alphabetical order would be:
    Aphrodite's Child - 666
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso - Darwin
Emerson Lake & Palmer - Trilogy
    Flash - Flash

No "Siberian Khatru" in "Buffalo 66". There's "Heart Of The Sunrise" sure, and the other two prog songs are "Moonchild" by KC and "Sweetness" by Yes. Unless I blinked and missed "SK" somewhere, but I'm pretty sure I didn't. Vincent Gallo was friends with Chris Squire and they even began doing a series of interviews for a proposed CS bio.

As always it's Luis' pick that speak to me. Especially his #2 and #1. Grand Wazoo totally changed me. I didn't understand instrumental music before then. It just made no sense. I bought that album, with no knowledge because it was the 80s and that's how we rolled, put it in and very few lyrics and no lyrics and no lyrics and I'm completely bored. Then Eat That Question starts, that awesome keyboard from George Duke, just blew me away. It was like George and Frank reached into my head and flipped some switches. All of a sudden I GOT IT. Instrumental music made sense. And for Brick a friend had given me MU and I was hooked and went to the record store and bought a bunch of basically random Tull cassettes, which in the 80s had 0 liner notes, the cover on the front and the track listing on the flap. Which of course for Brick was: Side 1: Thick as a Brick Side 2: Thick as a Brick. Well that sure looked weird. Got home put it in. It starts with the part I knew from MU and keeps going. And keeps going. And keeps going. Flip the tape. More of the same song. Woh. I literally wouldn't be the kind of person that watches this channel without those albums.

    Only five? Im.Frackin.Possible.
Just scratching the (mostly Anglo-centric) surface, 1972 yielded:
    Two albums from Banco.
    Two albums from Franco Battiato.
    Two albums from Gentle Giant.
Pictures At An Exhibition and Trilogy from ELP.
Two awesome albums from post-Flo & Eddie Zappa.
    Both Gnidrolog albums.
    Both Matching Mole albums.
    PFM's first two albums.
    Miles' On The Corner.
And the Genesis. And the Tull. And CTTE. Seventh Sojourn. Focus III. Debuts from Roxy Music and Klaus Schulze and Flash and Grobschnitt. Hoodoo Man from Birth Control. Cluster II.
Fine albums from Captain Beyond, Caravan, Ian Carr, Family, Herbie Hancock, Bo Hansson, Jonesy, Khan, Tangerine Dream, Man, Nektar, Pekka Pohjola, Renaissance, Soft Machine, Strawbs, Supersister, Tasavallan Presidentti, Univeria Zekt, Weather Report, Wild Turkey and Wishbone Ash.
Just for starters. Jeez. Exhausting in a good way.

Everyone seems to pick Close to the Edge as Yes' best album and maybe the greatest prog album of all time. It's hard to argue when you have a lot of experts saying the same thing. That said, my favorite Yes album is....The Yes Album. It was the first Yes album I heard (on 8track no less) and it just rung a chord with me.
