Edit: The predecessor was offered with an automatic option. We incorrectly say in the video this new model is the first auto.
Also, we now realise there is no centre diff. We didn't know what the LSD-type function was called during the time of filming, so we incorrectly kept referring to it as a 'centre diff'. Suzuki officially calls it a "brake LSD traction control" system.
Our apologies for these errors.
I'd pin this just so people who like to complain see it
@@DustyRobertson Thanks
Thank you, very good review. Re: the traction control/diff. It has no centre diff at all, just a locked driveline front/rear in 4wd mode. It uses the traction control to brake a spinning wheel per axle, to load up the opposite one on the same axle. Very much similar to the Freelander 1/Discovery 2 traction control. Yes the Jimny does look capable, although not really any different to a stock Defender 90 or Jeep Wrangler.
how can you do reviews with such non-existant knowledge???
@@Roxak Thanks for the feedback. We will try harder next time to produce free content for you.
Keep in mind we are getting in and out of new vehicles multiple times a week. It can be hard to learn every single thing about a car, every time. Also keep in mind we run a very small team here (we don't have researchers and editorial assistants like the other big channels). We also maintain a website and do all editing in-house.
In saying that, if we owned the car or had one over a longer period we're sure we could provide more facts for you. Alternatively, our written reviews are usually a lot more factual as we have time to sit down and check all the facts as we write.
In the end all we can do is apologise for this. It is simply the best we can do. If it's not good enough, perhaps you should check out the other channels on TH-cam.
as 5 door Jimny is launched in India, I was looking for a comprehensive review and your video is just perfect to say a big "YES" to this little beast.
Heard it's more unstable at higher speeds and while turning since it's the same width as the 2 door version but longer. Is this true?
@@OM-bs7of as this car is light it will be risky to turn it in high speed as maneuverability would be difficult. This you can call a short coming however at this price you should not expect everything from a car. Although price is also a bit on higher side however if you are buying 4*4 than you are an enthusiast so obviously you would not looking at a price tag that much.
@@ManufactureIndia you're missing the question im asking. Im only talking about the 2 door vs the 4 door jimny models. I have heard the 4 door is a lot more likely to turn over while corning at speed. Asking if that is true.
@@OM-bs7ofyes that's true
@@OM-bs7of I bought the 5 door Jimny last month, done about 3000km's with it and I have not felt any instability around corners. Maybe that was resolved somehow before releasing to South Africa (and Australia).
Then again, the Jimny aren't really built for speed anyway.
I've watched a dozen of these comparisons videos. And I am honestly impressed by how the Jimny keeps up with all these "serious" 4x4s; whilst still using road tyres!
This review is sooooooooo incredibly done! The car's off-road capability is just amazing~
We have been driving Jimnys for a number of years in the windy Cape in South Africa. Yes it's a wind catcher and wobbles in the lorry groves in the tar, but I wouldn't go without my Jimny. It always puts a smile on my face, it takes us everywhere offroad and is a great camping buddy. We have now fitted it with a Roofpod rooftent and it's awesome. The Jimny community is great and down to earth. LOVE them ❤. Thank you for your great review.
The BEST Jimny review. Especially the off road segment rather than those annoying reviewers who think driving on a dirt road and through a puddle is going off road.
Thanks. We'll try and produce more and more of these style reviews.
What an excellent review. No BS, no loud an obnoxious voice, just a calm presentation. Carwow and other companies should take notes.
I’m glad you enjoyed the Jimny, ai love your reviews and tests, I enjoy seeing cars I’ve never considered buying but seeing my own car be reviewed so well is fantastic, most reviewers don’t appreciate it for what it is and focus on it’s highway performance, I’m glad you were able to experience it off-road, If only you could own it for a month or so! I’ve had mine for 2 months and 8000+km and I keep finding little quirks and features that weren’t in the previous models or any other car for that matter.
Also, for the short period you had the Jimny did you notice people on the roads / car parks checking the Jimny out or taking photos? The kintetic yellow isn’t the most flattering but it’s still a Jimny, everywhere I go in my Jungle green Jimny I get looks, it turns heads on freeways, it makes people toot horns, every time I enter a store I come out to someone waiting by the Jimny to ask questions.
It’s a stunning car and a pleasure to drive even with a few short coming on road but I wouldn’t have it any other way, Just glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, a number of people came up to us during our test asking about the car. We made a few new friends :)
I know Suzuki calls it yellow, but isn't the color actually green in person?
I've got the old one 2017 model auto, you mentioned there was a previous gen behind you on the track, it would have been interesting to see a direct comparison between the old and new models.
Con unos conductores tan malos no venden ninguno. Se debe coger la subida por encima de caballon para que la llanta no patine veo que no conecto la tracción en la 4x4
finally a car manufacturer that listens to its feedback and makes a car which the actual consumers want
Like what? putting a moped motor inside a box with bicycle tires?
this is the first review of the many reviews of this suzuki that gets it right and talks about what the car is made for , great job and thank you .
Thanks!
Past year I have been watching reviews of this great little car and I reckon yours is the best most comprehensive I have seen. Nice work guys. Would love one of these. But have a 76 series...so.
Thanks. Appreciate the feedback. Can't go wrong with a 76!
A very comprehensive and honest review thank you. As a Jimny owner I fully agree - it loves being off-road way more than on it. 😁🤙🏻
Best Gen 4 Jimny review I have seen on TH-cam. Thanks for posting this!
great job man! Glad you are doing full reviews and not just performance data. Getting better and better each upload. Congrats.
Thanks for the feedback. Always great to hear :)

We took the Jimny off road last week. Very very capable, we did very well considering we were on-road tyres.
I bought the new Suzuki Swift and this came in the exact day I went to pick my new car... If I knew about it arriving, I would of bought this. We are a Suzuki family, 2018 Vitara, Samurai, Swift etc, they are such fun cars. I am really pleased with the new generation of Suzukis
do u know u have to wait one year for any purchase?
@@isaillis What? Who told you that? To get the Sport I had to wait 3 months and I simply said fuck it. My Swift now is 145horse power without turbo, so it's basically a sport one. The only difference is the bodykit.
This is great. I was worried that the A/T version would be less capable off road but it seems it can handle its own pretty well.
Yeah, MT is an obsolete tech really, in the next 10 years you probably cant buy M/T even in the cheapest 4x4 trim.
@@Ghost12561 the automatic Jimny is 3 seconds slower on a 0-100 test and the fuel consumption is also worse
Automatic transmissions has progressed a lot on the last decade but the 4 speed auto in the Jimny is crap
It's good that you did a thorough test on both the manual and automatic. Most of the journos just assume the autos suck and just ignore it. Here in Japan 80% of all the Jimny are autos. It's got to be good.
Jaguar Land Rover take note. Your new Defender could have been like this.
Best honest review. For highway, better cornering and steering feel, the 215 BFG tyre upgrade I did really improved the over all road handling, stable and quite
I did the same upgrade to 215 BFGs. I was amazed at how it improved the on-road feeling. It's hard to describe, but it now sits solid on the road. Only note to make is that the BFG tyres usually have around 40-45 psi in them. This was awful and slippery. Reduced to 28psi and they are fantastic.
Rabbit_NZ Agree on the PSI, feels better at the lower end , we run 30 psi👍
@@rabbit_nz176 How did you find the BFGs in terms of affecting your fuel economy?
I just keep seeing a modern series 1 Land Rover......
Basic, capable, cheap, reliable, functional.
I just wish it were 10% bigger.
Best test ever !
Unfortunately I now live in deepest France and can't find a dealer...I'd get one.

A very good, well balanced review dealing with testing a car for what it is. Thanks guys.
one of the best review on TH-cam of this great 4x4. thanks you guys. Great job
This is the almost perfect car for me, it just needs to be that tiniest bit bigger. I drive a 2005 grand vitara and that’s as small as I’d want. But this car should be on every mans xmas list, great little toy. And i can see it being a collectors item in a couple decades.
Owned what we called a Suzuki Samurai 4X4 here in Canada & was the best car I've ever owned, just bullet proof... hope the new product are still built as tough ;-)
Landrover, take note of how Suzuki modernise off roaders...
I thought it will break really quick but holly shirt, this little box can do it!
@@ericvalverderosado2046 with beam axles front and rear these things are weapons. Needs 2" of lift and some 215/75 R15 Kumho KL71s though.
As a LR D2a driver, I fully agree. I'd take a Jimney over the new Defender when its released as a confident prediction.
@@andyg611 Oh, pshaw! You don't want rugged funtionality - why, you actually want a full wooden interior!
Andy G the new defender is overpriced bling, and nobody will use it to go off road unless very wealthy because 99% of them will be leased.
to fix the stability, wider lower profile tires, like 215/55 or 60 tires 16" wheels all terrain, you can still go pretty much anywhere.
this has got to be one of the best car review channels...
This is the reason why the Jimmy will never come to the US. It will outsell the Jeep Wrangler. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I love it and great video. 👍👍
If they sold this in Canada i would buy one instantly.
Suzuki left Canada earlier this decade and the U.S. in the past one, I doubt they'll come back anytime soon. Maybe you can import one, cuz I've seen Canadians importing JDM cars like there's no tomorrow.
@@raulferro3998 i know that, that's why i said "if". Suzuki couldn't compete in the market because they chose not to compete. They had models that were designed for asia/europe and couldn't compete with NA based vehicles. Look at Kia and Hyundai, they're doing very well. Especially Kia, they got some nice vehicles.
It's just too bad, cause lots of the old Samurai's are still kicking around here.
have to be 15 years old to import so you can only get the old jimney
@@scottauger10 you don't need to import a vehicle if it's sold in Canada. Hence why i said, i would buy one if if it was sold in Canada.
@@scottauger10 Even if it is left hand drive? Cuz you can get one from Mexico too.
Gonna get my Jimmy for sure. I hope they continue the legacy of the old Samurai or 1st Gen Vitara (Geo Tracker).
What this little vehicle can do with stock tires and no modifications whatsoever no other full sized off road vehicle can do!!! Way to go Suzuki!!!
The push start button model is called "Sierra" and that one has more electronics to it suited more for urban drive. The Jimny is kept basic becoz it is meant more for off-road where basic stuff ensure there is less risk of breaking down. I ❤️ Jimny as it is a great fun off-roader. 👍🏻
This was awesome. Don't worry about the camera angles and such...it adds some authenticity and charm and all your apologies make you seem like a good, considerate human being. I'm a little tired of being screamed at by youtubers because they have 'high energy'. Good job and keep it up.
Thanks for the feedback.
Absolutely fantastic display offloading that machine. I know that most people would not want to go through the hassle of a custom frame to make the Jimny a full body on frame vehicle but I did a mid 80s Samurai on a modified and boxed chassis with a 4" body and 6" suspension lift a GM 2.8 v-6 and 5 speed manual transmission swap and put it on offset 15" rims with 33" A/T tires. We called it the Big Toe because it looked like a 1/4 scale Monster Truck. It was a serious offroad machine that also had pretty decent highway capability post build. The GM powerplant and gearbox made for a much needed boost in power and let's just say that merging onto the interstate was no longer a cringing event. It would be like slapping a stock v-8 into an S-10 that had been powered by a 2.8 v-6 it suddenly became a rocket. Take a vehicle that weighs roughly 1100 kilos and give it a 115 horsepower under the hood which was nearly doubling the power it scoots along nicely. I wish that Suzuki was still marketed in the USA because I would love to get my hands on one of these new Jimny SUVs and build another Hot Wheels offroader. With some of the 1.5 Turbo configurations today making nearly 200 HP or more it would be a fun little Ute that would take me back to my teenage years. I miss the Micro 4x4s that were imported in the late 70s and 80s; they were basic as it got, didn't cost a whole bunch and made for awesome adventure machines when Frankensteined together with some mad science. Please Suzuki come back to the USA I need a Jimny in my life.
Blank buttons are for seat heaters, Aus doesn’t have seated heats, Nz and other markets have them as an extra option.
I believe they are standard on the SZ5 in the UK, we don't get any of the good colours though (dark green or gunmetal)
Okay this is definitely going to be my first 4x4!!! Can’t wait to get one and explore Australia with it!!
Keep us up too date. I wanna hear from you when you get one
IF this was in North America I would totally buy one of these.

Thanks for the test, and thanks for a video without a lot off music in the background.

The very BEST Jimny natural test, I've ever seen and I could demand :) Unusual vehicle, unusual crew! Very best regards!
Suzuki no longer sell cars Stateside, cause The American Consumer Report made a "Fake New" review of the Jimny. Suzuki sue the publishing company and won the case and American Consumer Report paid millions to Suzuki for the damages they incured with their fake review, but Suzuki decided to stop selling their products except the motorcycles in the US but the Jimny is sold anywhere in the world and have become very very successfull
What a shame it's a lovely car I hope they bring it back to the states
US is king of fake news, serves them all right. Glad they are available here in Australia, and even our mates in Russia get them.
Please bring at least these back 😭😭
Same in Canada. I want a Jimny and am looking to import one from Mexico. Low cost functional car which is hard to find these days.
It's so much like the older jimny and I love it!
Just back from travelling 10 countries in one journey, sleeping at mountaintops in my rooftent, Jimny equiped with fridge/freezer, complete kitchen, hot shower etc etc... climbed the craziest rocks and drove through deep lakes, fully loaded, not even one single problem! A little bit slower than my 300bhp Golf, but still best buy ever! 😎🤙🏻💕
Fyi:
About turning off auto-brake on difficult tracks: On difficult tracks, we use Low gear, which also switches off all safety systems! 🙄
This color is not only two-tone, it excists in single color.
The 2 fake buttons in the center console, are seat heating in mine, but we don't have a rear viewing camera (Belgium).
To end: It shows in everything you say... running the clutch, not a lot of torque, etc... that you haven't discovered low-gear 1st! 😂 A whole new world will open, I assure you 😋
What should I buy? Automatic version ou manual? Thanks man

Great, informative video. I’m considering buying one and this has been very helpful. I’m intending to use it (with a trailer) as a delivery vehicle for machinery, and the utility level of specification, the cost and the fact it has a low four pulling capability, all make it look very attractive. I was waiting for the new defender but it’s turned out not to be a working vehicle in its new reincarnation. Many thanks again.

twin lockers, 31 mtz tyres and 2inch lift would make this little off-roader very capable on a budget without sacrificing reliability
isn't it too underpowered for 31 inch tyres? with it only having 130 nm of torque
For me, just twin lockers and something for upgrade the engine in just 5 or 10 hp.
Thomas Van Ende I’m sure it would be hella slow on 31s but I’d think be more than enough power in low range. Won’t set any land speed records but neither will any 4x4
Heh, on that moped engine? It would drive a top speed of 30 miles an hour!
Jerry Zhang have seen couple around Australia already and no trouble going 100km/ph. What else do people expect for a sub 30k new 4x4. If they put a faster 6cyl it would just make the whole car cost more
Thank you for such a comprehensive and 'to the point' review!
ButI really just have to say... There's no center differential in the Jimny, it's a transfer case. A transfer case can either send 50% of the torque to the front wheels, or disengage them completely.
That means that if it's in 4x4 mode the front and rer wheels will spin at the same speed no matter what, also around corners which is why you should never use 4x4 on the road or any high traction surface for that matter.
