Almeda Mall in its Early Days 1966 - 1973

  • It's been a over a decade on my hunt for photos from Almeda Mall. The search has taken me back to Houston to the Julia Ideson special collections at the Houston Public Library and the University of Houston Special Collections room, as well as to Austin for the Bob Bailey holdings at the University of Texas. Along the way, helpful folks have sent in snapshots to share on the Facebook group Almeda Mall '68-'88.
But the real boon came in 2018 when someone from Almeda Mall management who wished to remain anonymous, sent me flash drives filled with old digitized slides. The earliest year was 1973. I will never be able to say thank you enough for this treasure.
This video starts a bit earlier with the beginnings of Almeda Mall, starting at the stand alone Foley's store that came in 1966, then the Grand Opening coverage in 1968, before getting to all the photos from 1973 when the mall celebrated its 5th anniversary. I've attempted to group the photographs chronologically from the January Pet Parade to the Christmas decorations. Hope you enjoy!
Many of these photos are at the South Belt History Digital Archive found here: southbelthousto... (use the search bar)

I was born in 67 and watching this reminded me how much simpler life was back then.

I was born and raised in Texas City just south on I-45. In 1973 I was 15. Grew up going to this great mall and eating at the Picadilly cafeteria. This brought back such wonderful memories of how it used to be.❤️😢 I miss those days.

I am 58 and born and raised in Houston, 77023 by 45 @ Waysidedrive, and I say people got along very nicely and I had and still have a very culturally diverse circle of friends and it seems to me that everybody was friendlier in those days!

At the 3:24 mark the family in the publicity photo are the Jeffersons. They lived across the street and their son Cedric was our best friend. A wonderful family. Our families had a big Italian dinner the night before we moved in 1974. We miss them to this day.

Having started my Houston mall experience as a baby going to Gulfgate (no memory), to Sharpstown (mom shopped at the attached grocery store, there!), Northwest Mall, Memorial City & The Galleria (last 2 were the main malls throughout my school years), I finished out my Houston life, as an adult with a family, with Almeda Mall. I so loved its human scale which I knew was a twin of Northwest Mall. It was not overwhelming. Baybrook Mall was another adulthood one, but it was not charming like Almeda. Thank you for this wonderful record of a fabulous place.

This video brings back a lot of memories, and a couple of tears. I am in my late 50's now, but remember having coke floats in the Foley's restaurant with my cousins as a child while the adults went shopping. Things were better back then, less people, less crime (notice that there were no locks on the bikes), no cell phones or personal computers. You had to carry some pocket change, 10 cents I believe, and use payphones to call for a ride home. Going to the mall to buy an album at the record store, or concert tickets for your favorite band, was all done in person. Most people dressed nicer back then too when in public. Even getting on an airplane was a dressy event. Some things have gotten better, but in general things have slowly declined in my opinion.

What a wonderful presentation of our yesteryears…..started watching and the tears fell. I doubt there’s any other community on this a earth that has what we have from all the years, wonderful friends and good times.

R.I.P. Palais Royal -- They gave me my first credit card.
Palais Royal originated in 1921 in Downtown Houston. The Almeda Mall location opened in 1968 and remained opened until the company went out of business in 2020.

I grew up and still live within walking distance of this mall. Every ethnicity lived together back then (I’m 56) and yes, we did all get along. Thank you for posting this. What a bittersweet walk down memory lane! I'm editing this....we STILL get along.

Did you go to Meador Elementary? I lived in Kirkwood from 1967 to 1974 when we moved to California.

@@jamesfields2916 no, I went to Atkinson. I live(d) in Eastrridge Terrace, the neighborhood on the Atkinson side of the park. ☺️

@@mik1of3 we used to ride our bikes on the dirt hills right across the street from Atkinson. That would have been early 70s.

@@jamesfields2916 the trails! My mom didn’t like me to go there but I did occasionally. Did you ever go to the sandpits? I never did… see previous reason.

@@mik1of3 when I was a kid there the sandpits scared the hell out of me. I would go about 10 feet down the trail behind Beverly Hills Park and stop.

This must go past 1973, as NBC celebrated its 50th anniversary (and had the "N" logo) in 1976, beginning at 16:50.

I didn't think this mall was worth mentioning, much less make a video on. It's interesting.
