BRUTALLY HONEST CHAT | CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE

- Hello everyone! Happy Friday. I'd just like to preface this video by saying that this is just my PERSONAL experience. I really wanted to use this platform to talk about my experience as a first generation, northern, state-educated student.
When I was applying for university, I used to spend ages searching online for information about Cambridge, application advice, student experiences, etc. No one in my family had been to university before so it was a really alien concept to me. I largely relied on the internet for tips and advice. So I'd be super happy if this video could help just one person who is in the same position that I was in all those years ago.
DISCLAIMER: I don't want this video to discourage anyone from applying to university or accepting an offer from Cambridge in any way. This is just my experience and obviously it differs from person to person.
Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments if you'd like some more advice or you want to question anything I've said in the video. I know this is a touchy topic so I tried to tread with caution as best as I could.

Just wanted to pop in and give you a virtual hug! I was turned down this year when I applied for a PhD position at Cambridge. I don't think I can compete with all the native speaker applicants out there. But I still like to watch TH-cam channels that talk about Cambridge. Haha weird huh.
It is definitely a bad thing if the north is not being as proportionally represented as it can be (based on having the required entry grades). Where's our next Alan Bennett or Michael Palin (and they were both Oxford instead too). Why should Cambridge become such an international university when it's not even properly a national university?
Thank you so much for this, it was really helpful :) I'm an offer holder from a state comp in the midlands and am simultaneously excited and terrified. Did you meet many midlanders there? Ahh I'm scared but it does sound amazing!
Aww you're welcome and congratulations!! It is amazing-- just make sure to make the most of every opportunity you can because it's once in a lifetime.
And yes, I did meet lots of midlanders! It's always funny when they enter the debate of "where does the north/south divide begin?" with "but what about the midlands?"😂😂
@@EmmaLouiseVlogs thank you! And that's good, I've already been getting into debates in offer holder group chats trying to persuade people that the Midlands exists so I'm guessing there'll be more of that at uni 😂
That was interesting and valuable, an insider’s view always is, particularly when it’s the unvarnished truth. A very intense experience for sure, and one that has now become part of you. The drinking culture was a surprise though, wasn’t expecting that, not least because it’s not a cheap pastime. Plenty of ups and downs but good to hear support was available for the downs. I suppose one follow-on question is, is there anything that should be changed in the way Cambridge is organised or structured that might benefit those that will become future undergraduates?
Thank you for sharing your experience
Someone recommended your channel, so I watched this video and then subscribed.
really enjoyed watching this
Yay I'm glad!!😊
You sound a bit like PaigeY. A few days ago, she posted a video compilation of all her melt-downs before exams from all three years, which she reacts to and laughs about and says it's worth it. You also have in common that you both seem nice. My daughter went to a posh school in the States, and was often surrounded by legacy kids who coasted a lot, while she was constantly working hard to earn her spot there and prove herself. Your experience sounds like hers.
Paige and I are actually good friends in real life! We lived together all through university and she inspired me to start this channel😅😅
Hard work is an invaluable skill that will get you very far in life, I feel. Sometimes it's frustrating to see people around you coasting through but I've always felt rewarded for my hard work. It all pays of off in the end. Good luck to your daughter too!!😊
It is so much fun listening to this. Please can you treat some of your books here?
Aww Cambridge sounds like a dream! (But also a nightmare lol)
Yes, it was definitely both at once!! But 100% worth it. I still think it was the right uni for me🎓
❤
I like it because my dream is university of Cambridge 🥺🤲🏴🇬🇧
Hi. Sorry to ask: what is your take on speed reading, while maintaining same level of comprehension?
but what if your from a benefit-bound family and poor
You can still get in, your personal or family financial background won't rule you out, and you could potentially get grants or scholarships to help you financially. But you still have to be clever. If you're thick as pigshit, you don't have a chance.
Just a heads up that you’ve spelt University incorrectly in your title!
Thanks for noticing this!! Slip of the hand whilst typing😅😅
Technically, your pronunciation of 'book' makes much more sense 😅
Exactly haha! It's how you're taught to pronounce the 'oo' sound when you're a kid😂😂
what!!! didn't know you had a youtube channel that's mad
Haha yep! Started it as a lockdown hobby and it kind of stuck😅
