Travis, I have found that what works best for us is to take cuttings from the spring crop in either the last week of June or first week of July and root the cuttings for a fall crop. I think I can get sturdier and larger transplants sooner than starting them from seed (plus I can save some seeds). We are in McDonough, GA Zone 8A and I find we are about 3 weeks behind you (2 weeks, plus the 1 week video publication delay). I just stick the sucker cuttings into some ProMix in a 6" pot and keep them on the porch in the shade until I start to see green growth. By then the roots are well established and I move them out to the sun and start pushing fertilizer to them. Then transplant about a week later. I've also found the gold tomato variety "Carolina Gold" will store a lot longer after frost hits (store indoors) and we enjoy them well into December (First frost is usually first of November).

I also find that the clones are sturdier than seedlings.

I did this last year and it worked very well I just did it too late and the frost came early so my tomato plant died before we got an appreciable amount but we did get some! It was a cherry tomato plant. Not determinate though so that could’ve been why.

That is a great technique. I do the same. so simple. I plant em real tight too. Usually do 6'x6 spacing for summer but 2'x2 works fine for fall tomatoes.

I think I might try some small bush cherry tomatoes in a pot. Don't quite have as much time as you do to grow out more.

I take cuttings from both determinate and indeterminate, root tone or Ali Vera gel and plant and I also root some in water with some blood meal mixed in. They thrive until a hard frost but I have covered them and kept them going until December! Plenty of time! I use agrothrive, bone meal, wood ash and the agrothrive for blooms!

I take some Cuttings! I got 12 about to go back into the garden here in another week or 2.
If all goes well, I will get a real bumper crop mid to late September through frost.

Just as an idea for fall tomatoes, I started last year saving some selected suckers off of my spring tomatoes. Last year had good lucking doing this. Ended last fall still harvesting in Nov. Also picked all the green ones and ripened indoors had fresh tomatoes on the table for Thanksgiving. I currently have a row of 17 sucker plants started in the garden with another 6 in 2" pots in the garage, waiting for a spot in the garden. Have had good success thus far getting suckers to root quickly in fresh potting soil. I believe they are bigger and stronger in a shorter time than starting from seed. Hoping my fall plants will come on since we had a very wet spring and it has hurt my production. Lots of high heat and humidity following the rain left many plants struggling. We are in zone 7b in deep southern IL - lots of humidity between the two big rivers. Love your content and have followed you for the past couple years. First time posting. Sorry for the long post

In zone 7b I’ve already started twelve Tumbling Tom Cherry tomatoes and transplanted them into 12” Hanging baskets. That way I can move them around for maximum sunlight and protection from excessive moisture/frost by moving them into the shed. Fun experiment 👍

Yea I've grown fall tomatoes the last few years. I gave up on trying to get indeterminate fall tomatoes, so good call there on not messing with those. Cherry tomatoes do well and the determinate do alright, they are slower to produce due to the cooler shorter days in the fall and I also don't think they taste as good, but they are still better than store bought tomatoes. I just grow a few in the fall for fresh eating.

This came along at the perfect time. I bought a Mr stripey heirloom tomato at the store and it was really good so I saved some seeds. I’m going to grow it in a container so I can bring it into my greenhouse in November to let it have enough time for some fruit to mature.it’s supposed to be a La Niña weather pattern this fall so hopefully we have a warm fall

First year for me! In Arizona (desert) we call it monsoon tomatoes. I planted my seedlings back in early June and they have been transplanted out July 15 th if our humidity from monsoons start kicking in. Now it’s still real hot like 113 so I cover them with 60% shade cloth 24/7. Won’t come off until September mornings and then back on in afternoon. In October they will be free of shade cloth. I fertilize once a week with liquid fertilizer because we have to water every day when it’s 110. So far so good and they look very healthy. From what I hear our best tomatoes here in the desert are fall tomatoes! So same as you… keep them as cool as possible until temps cool and hope for some beautiful tomatoes. 🍅

    • @archstanton9703
      @archstanton9703 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I’m in AZ as well and planted the tomato plants in April and started them from seed. I’m going to cut a few of them back soon and might start a few from cuttings from the existing plants. I’ve been trying different varieties over the last four years but haven’t found one that is very prolific in the AZ heat. The plants definitely do better once the monsoon arrives. I might try planting some seedlings in July next year. I use 40% shade cloth and use liquid fertilizer, and all the tomatoes plants are now in containers and not in raised beds due to invasive tree roots.

Totally agree with your strategy. Here in Louisiana zone 9 it’s still brutally hot through September. Last year I got a hard frost October 30th then another hard frost a week or two later. Doesn’t leave much time for harvest, even if the first frost is as late as thanksgiving.

I'm trying something new to me for fall tomatoes. I've trimmed back the plants that have gotten really leggy while it's too hot to flower.
I'm continuing to feed and maintaining pest control on the mother plants and with the clippings, I'm picking nice ones and sticking them in a bucket of water to get some roots going. I'll be planting them when they get a bunch of roots.
I'm up by Vidalia.. cools off a little sooner than by you.

I planted a bunch of determinate tomatoes around July 17th and most of them are up and some have their 2nd set of leaves already. I’m starting their fertilization schedule today! I also started more cucumbers and this weekend I’ll be planting corn and more summer squash along with some winter squash. My main thing I’m focusing on planted asap is brassicas. It’s the only time I grow them here in east Texas zone 9a. I want lots of broccoli, cabbage, kale, and cauliflower this year and early next year. I plan to fill the freezer with my harvests! The tomatoes will be eaten fresh or made into chili or salsa. So excited for fall tomatoes! Also I’m going to test rooting suckers this fall to compare with the growth from seed. This should be interesting!

Perfect timing. I just planted my second tomato crop in containers in the mountains of western Arkansas. I finally got some Red Snapper seeds and I’m hoping for the best. They germinated fast, and I have 100% germination. I’m already impressed enough to order more seeds. I’m also planting a hybrid I’ve been working on for a while to see what it does. So far the Red Snapper is out pacing it.

I'm in zone 9B and I still have indeterminate tomatoes from the spring planting that I expect more fruit from.
I'm going to have to raise your level of concern about planting this late for an autumn harvest. I don't sow tomato seeds any later than June 1 for an autumn harvest, and it stays warm enough to grow tomatoes through December around here.
To determine when to sow tomato seeds, you should subtract the seed-to-harvest time from your expected first day of daytime temperatures below 85°F, and add 30 days to that (or however long it takes for your variety to develop ripe fruit from flower). For you, 85°F is probably the second week of September, so for a 100-day seed-to-harvest variety that's June 30.

Over here in north Texas we got a lot of rain in the spring that caused a lot of problems. We did alright and was able to jar up quite a bit of salsa, but not enough to can just tomatoes. We tried taking sucker cuttings this year from the healthy parts of the plant and so far they are looking good. They will be ready to hit dirt in a couple of weeks. Cuttings are roadster, ananas noire, and 1920 something Abe Lincoln. First year trying roadster and haven’t been impressed, but it was a soggy spring so I won’t count it out for trying again, but red snapper has definitely performed excellent the previous years so that’s going to be in the spring lineup for sure. The other two plants I usually only get a couple of fruits from. I don’t care. I have the realestate and I don’t have a problem growing a plant for one fruit when they taste that good. When your tomato tastes like ketchup, yeah l’m in. The heirloom tomato game is rough down here. Now to those proptek trays. I love them and I hate them. Love them when I’m going hard with a full tray. I don’t like that they don’t make smaller trays. I love those small cells. Just mold that into thirds for smaller grows. As always we love the content and job well done. Keep up the good work. And Travis, your customers want more berry figs in stock.

two years ago my tomato plants planted the first week of may, (only plant one round of tomato plants each year) multiple problems and long story short, no tomato harvest to discuss. soooo, when i realized they were a total bust, it was late july. so, i pulled them all out and i planted seed directly in the garden 5 seed per spot and i found that they out grew the ones i planted as starts, and i didn't have to transplant i just thinned them to one each. we didn't get the tomatoes we wanted but we did get a good bit in oct which is very late here in south jersey. so i suggest you try a few direct seeded might work out and save you time. good luck keep the great vid's coming.
