Excellent suggestion on backing off on the watering when hardening off... makes perfect sense and have never heard any other gardener on TH-camr mention that. As usual, I learned a lot from you today. Love your channel!
I always start hardening off my plant close to the house and shaded. Helps block wind. Then after a few days I keep moving them further out so they receive more sun and wind. Makes the pretty tuff by the time they get planted out in a week or two.. Works fantastic.
My local nursery is now carrying Coop Gro and Pro mix fpx! Got 25 lbs. Of coop gro for 24.95 and a huge bag of pro mix for 32 bucks. It's night and day compared to what I was getting at the local big box store. I see why it's all you use. I'm definitely hooked on pro mix. I'll know about the fertilizer soon enough
Jeff from East Tennessee.Travis, it makes me so happy to see those tomatoes come up. Tomatoes came up right on time!! Zinnias and marigolds jumped up very fast. Now just waiting on my peppers to come up!! That’s another happy day!! I like to get my plants outside as soon as possible!! When we have days in the 70’s out they go. I will take them out and bring them in every chance I get!! On cool spells and rain they stay under grow lights. I do grow a lot of plants. For friends and coworkers. They don’t have much luck starting seeds but I have been told that I can grow a plant out of a rock. Seeding plants is one of my favorite things to do!! Now just working on becoming a more well rounded gardener.
I now have a covered porch on the south side of my house and I used it to harden off my plants this year. Moving them closer to the edge and into the sun everyday. It's been my most successful year yet. I always struggle with the process and end up losing some plants. Didn't know about letting them dry out. Thanks
I enjoyed this, I can’t wait to start sowing! I do start seeds indoors under lights, so they need to be hardened off. I’m not fond of carrying trays in and out, so I have a system that works without that. About a week before it’s time to transplant into the garden I bring up the trays of seedlings and put them in the shade in a part of my garden that only gets early morning sun. When the sun comes up the next day they just get an hour or two of gentle early morning sunlight. Every day I move the trays a little further out so they get longer hotter sunshine. If we get an unseasonably cold night I will bring them in, but I generally don’t have to. I have been hardening off that way for donkeys years so I can emphatically state that it works! Klaus
I don't know how long you've been waiting on the purple tomatoes but mine came up in less than a week. Now I only planted two (I've already got too many tomatoes planted but couldn't resist trying them) and both came up and they're growing fast. I hope you get some of them up. Good Luck.
I bought some purple gmo tomato seed after your video. I had mine on a heat mat but they took about 7 to 10 days longer than the other cherry tomatoes seed. Germinated 9 of the 10 seeds.
When transitioning plants from indoor to outdoor environments for hardening off, I opt for employing sizable, transparent, and sturdy plastic containers to shield the young vegetation from potent winds. Furthermore, this method facilitates the plants’ adaptation to sunlight amidst windy conditions, ensuring that no opportunities for sun exposure are missed.
We grew the giant marigolds last year and were AMAZED at how well they did. I planted a few in between some peppers and they grew so large they shaded my peppers completely and I had to pull some of them up. The bees absolutely loved them too. We will keep those in our garden from now on!
I grow seedlings in my house-- I use window screens stacked over the plants to shade them from the sun. I start them three screens deep. It takes about 7 days to transition to full sun. I usually try to start the process on a cloudy day. In my area it still is freezing overnight when I do this, so they have to come inside. But I find the sunlight transition is far more important than temperature.
Just a warning if you have a dog or cat that digs around in the flowers: Ageratum can be toxic to grazing animals, causing liver lesions. All parts of the plant are poisonous and may be harmful to pets or humans if ingested. So I planted a few where the moles and voles have popped up. Hoping they'll go for the flowers and leave my other plants alone! Hope the "Wax Dip" on the fig tree cuttings worked as well for you as it has for me. Thanks for the videos Travis!
I feel your relief in being able to get your plants outside. I've been taking plants back and forth from my shed, where I have them under lights, to a table in the Sun. And then carrying them back into the shed before dark. It looks like the weather will now allow me to leave them out most nights. I started my tomatoes the first of March on an 18 hours and 6 hours off schedule. The plants are about 10" tall and very bushy. I have them in containers a bit larger than Travis'. It surprised me they are so tall in less than a month. I change the hours my lights are on next year back to 15 hours on, 9 off. It's the same with my tobacco transplants, normally it takes almost two months of growth before they can be set out. They've overgrown their containers and planting time is almost a month away. I guess they're going in early this year.
Great content! Tomatoes, peppers and zinnias were planted last weekend here in Tallahassee. Potatoes are looking great. Take care and enjoy Easter with your family....
Hardening off tip here in Arizona in spring and fall… put the out on a cloudy day for a few hours works well. Then shade for a few hours and then a little sun at a time.
Looks like the leggy tomatoes recovered? I just seeded some of mine. Placed an order for seeds from you and Hoss the other day. I just hope the growth is healthy and fruits are abundant. It’s nice having you since you I can just follow your lead. I’m 2 months behind you weatherwise.
I was able to keep many hot pepper plants alive over the winter including my pubescens varieties. The main pubescens plant only grew about 10" last year. This year I might get a few peppers and it will take until the 3rd year to get real production.
I move most of my seedlings to my greenhouse ground as soon as they germinate. I use row cover fabric if freezing weather is forecast. They're placed on the southern side, and I roll up the sides any time to temperatures are above 40 degrees. This allows them full sun and wind exposure.
Lord i have a fig forest in my basement. I cant wait to let them out in a month. I need a greenhouse. Lol. Resisting ordering you new cool figs until i get the big guys outside.
I bought some of the gmo purple tomato seeds also and out of 6 seeds that i planted only 1 has came up after 2 weeks. Luckily the sent me 13 seeds so i planted the rest of them to see if i have better luck. I'm also using a heat mat with a dome over my seed trays.
It's been my experience that depending on when you cut a tree down it will still actually bloom... Alders are notorious for saving a ton of energy. Be absolutely awesome if the log takes tho.
Sunburn got my transplants this year....fortunately, I got them in before it was irreversible. I'm notoriously mean to my seedlings but it seems I was a little to mean this year 😂
We use a toothpick dampened on the need to plant really small seeds. Works really well. i always wondered if the plants in our small greenhouse with rollup sides needed to be hardened off. Now I know. Always was told if you had a few days of cloudy weather, you would not have to bring them inside. But I wonder about the wind more than the sun.
Got a question about your greenhouse. We’re could I get one? I use my house to start my seeds. Great job in this video as well. I really enjoy all your helpful information you share! Keep up the great work. I would like to visit one day. I’m in eastern NC
Hot peppers are notorious for being hard to germinate I planted 12 guajillo pepper seeds and one germinated.😮 Hardening off is a must for tomatoes and peppers
I just ordered Roadster Tomato seeds from Lazy Dog Farm store! Can’t wait to try them! Can you share where you ordered your flower seeds from? Thank you
You’ll find you’ll be more comfortable in those polyester tee shirts than cotton. I wear mine all the time. They breathe, dissipate moisture, clean well. Great for summer. Not great for cold. Worth mentioning I think.
I ordered a packet of the purple gmos after you talked about them I had 4 out of the packet to germinate? Doesn’t seem too good to me would like for a few more to go.
Are those 2.5" starter pots? I have a bunch of 4" ones but I'm wondering if they're just a little too big when you think about ideal transplanting size, greenhouse space, etc.
Getting everybody worked up for nothing is a gentleman’s sport. I’ve been known to participate in the same when the entertainment potential appears to be worth it. 😎😎😎
Travis, I think you are to the point of needing a greenhouse for the Fig Operation and go back to using the original one for the rest of the garden needs. The Fig house needs to be pretty big from the looks of how well your fig business appears to be going (build a little bigger than current need for future expansion).

I do the same! It really does work!

you have doubled your subs since this time last yeah congratz!
Thanks! Hopefully we'll hit 100k by the end of the year.

Great information and show... as always! 👍
Our purple tomatoes took 2 weeks to germinate, was ready to throw them out then here they sprouted.
Got a 75% germination on them.

I ordered those purple GMO tomatoes also. Mine germinated in 3 days in a paper towel on a heat mat
All good info
Datil peppers rule. Very regional little treat. Cheers from right across the border.
My purple hybrids took 2 weeks to pop on a heat mat with humidity dome.

Great video, keep seeing so many tray types. What are your most recommended/ thanks
I have some of those purple tomatoes planted it’s only been four days so keep us updated on how long it takes
I've got two popping as of today. Not spectacular, but better than zero.

Not being bosy , brassicas may be a good place to start , normally great easy germination
A little tough love goes a long ways whith seedlings, even helps with disease resistance.

Ours came from Atlas Greenhouse which is about 40 mins from us in Alapaha, GA.
I'm plugging sweet basil transplants everywhere I got room.
Hot peppers are notorious for being hard to germinate
I planted 12 guajillo pepper seeds and one germinated.😮

Nadine,
My Roadsters from Lazy Dog popped up 3-4 days ago. Exciting stuff!
John McHatton
I planted my roadsters about 2 weeks ago and they are thriving. Everyone of them germinated❤
Got some from Johnny's, got some from Harris Seeds
@@LazyDogFarm thank you

I'd be curious what fig tree I could grow up Pennsylvania I'm about 70 miles north of Gettysburg Pennsylvania
You'd probably want to grow them in a large pot up there so you could protect it during the winter. If you do that, any variety should work well.
Isn't there a northern variety?😊
Are those 2.5" starter pots? I have a bunch of 4" ones but I'm wondering if they're just a little too big when you think about ideal transplanting size, greenhouse space, etc.
Yeah they're 2.5"
Hi there. So it’s ok to transplant watermelon plants? If so I’m going to start now. Dallas Texas here thank you friend!
Certainly. All the commercial growers transplant them.
@@LazyDogFarm thank you!
My purple tomatoes I have had 100% germination so far. They are only 4 inches tall but looking good.
Fungus gnat tips?
Top your seeds with perlite.
What type of greenhouse is that?
Atlas Easy Grow
If you say “taters”, you’ve got to say “maters”. It’s the law. Go Dawgs.
P.S. Thanks as always for the video and tips 👍

I think you're right.
I thought after germination they should come off the heat mat.
They don't have to. They do require more frequent watering when on the heat mat.
I planted 10 of those purple tomato seeds. 3 germinated. not very good.
I ordered the purple tomatoes an 3 out of 4 came up if I get a third eye it's your fault lol
Haha! They don't appear to like my seed starting methods. lol
For whatever reason i have good germination for all of my seeds EXCEPT FOR HERBS :( any heeb doesnt matter i can never get it to germinate
Some herbs are tough to start from seed. Basil is really easy. Cilantro and dill are usually pretty easy too.
You need a bigger greenhouse
Yes I do.
Why would I want to buy a genetically modified seed?
