  • Somerville is the debut game from Jumpship, with former members of Playdead (known for Limbo and Inside) at the helm. It’s absolutely gorgeous, clever and engrossing, but it also runs into some hitches that hold it back. With some cleaning up, this game is easily one of the best of the year, but those issues are still worth noting

This game’s visuals are on point! I didn’t understand what was going on in the story but I’m okay with that and the fact that it was made by a inside/limbo dev makes me love it more.

It's a shame about the technical issues. Inside might be simple but you can sense the perfectionism of its creators, so much effort was put into animation that it can feel like too much, but it really changes how you experience the game.

Yeah I honestly was shocked when the game gave me so many problems. You don't see that with Cinematic Platformers very often, and you definitely didn't see it from Playdead. I still see it as a good game outside of those issues tho

This is a really fair review, and mostly aligns with my takeaway: the technical issues didn't ruin the game for me, but they sure did get in the way. The game really hinges on its presentation to keep you immersed, moving forward, and staying with the character/s emotionally. But it buckles under the weight of its different ambitions, whether its physics-based puzzles, unique use of dynamic interactive lighting, or dramatic scene changes that can impact gameplay. Just enough of those issues didn't compound to the point of unplayability for me, though I did have to restart a chapter when the mom/kid bugged out of existence during a puzzle that required them 😕 lol
I played this on an Xbox Series S, and unfortunately the biggest distraction was the frame rate being all over the place. I'm the last person to throw a tantrum over FPS, especially for indie games (my favorite kind), but even during the opening credits it was super choppy. It felt like an animation choice at first, but then I found moments that ran fine and it just became distracting anytime a stunning setpiece brought a next-gen console to its knees. To your point: this game really requires perfect performance to allow the presentation to shine at full brightness. We shouldn't have to reboot a game several times to disarm game-breaking bugs. But I still really enjoyed it, and couldn't stop playing it - it was almost like a page-turner sci-fi novel come to life.
The last thing I found strange is how quiet the game's release was. I was following it all year, and then it suddenly kinda dropped and reviews are what told me it was available. I wonder if they're pretty aware of the issues, then, too. But I appreciate breakdowns like this, it's good to see some conversation around what's otherwise a really special experience and one I won't soon forget!

Very fair review. I played it recently, and there was jank, but no progress stopping bugs. The second playthrough I looked for all the secrets, which allows the player to learn the alien language, which helps to understand the story and choose the ending you want.

Damn... I loved Inside so I had high hopes for this one. Hopefully it gets a patch or two soon so that the technical issues don't mar the experience for new players.
Great video. Appreciate the ability to avoid spoilers, as I can't remember if I've seen the stuff you were talking about.

Seems like it's getting a mixed reception, especially on steam. As art I think it's great, but for some people it might just be better to watch a playthrough than try it out themselves. There's a lot of good elements, but I can see why some people were left disappointed even outside the technical problems

@@AsadAnjum I generally like to experience those artistic games for myself, but I could get why people would just watch a let's-play. I'll probably wait for a few patches and a sale.

Finished the game on Xbox Series X today. Didn’t encounter major bugs so i think it’s been patched.
Now just have to think about what it all means…

so much missed potential, waited months for this game expecting a riveting alien invasion story and got a walking simulator with jank gameplay and a clusterfuck of a story, you dont even see a single alien in the game

On series s I simply cannot keep playing the framerate is just terrible I think it goes to lows 15, and then you go inside some building 60 again it messes up

It is fun, and it'll be even better if it gets polished up. It's on gamepass so if you have that you can try it out, it's only about 5 hours long

Enjoyed the (funny) opinion on its "almost" brilliance but I wholeheartedly disagree. Spoiler : it's bad... really bad...
Summed up : people have already mentioned the lack of an actual captivating story, the bugs, the characters without character, the camera which has its own will, the puzzles which are not really puzzles, the soulless feel of it all and so on... Let me also throw in these to the mix : repeatedly, I had the impression that things were re-used from Inside : the soundsnippets which are repeated over and over again and were used rather sparingly to convey a unique mood in *some* scenes in Inside. And I will try not to spoil this for people who haven't played Inside yet : that thing with the boomboomboom-barrier? (trying to be cryptic here) Repeated ad nauseum in this game : run from A to B while taking cover or bypassing the route...
Phenomenal sceneries but it was (*unfortunately*) a rubbish game. Disappointment of 2022 😞

Ah, it's unfortunate that it wound up letting you down so much. I still have a more positive outlook on the game than a lot of the buzz I've heard online but I can't attest to the Inside similarities. Enough time has passed that I dont remember any specific puzzles from Inside (I need to play it again soon) so it could definitely have some reused ideas that I didn't notice. I still think it had a lot of the right ingredients, but I see where peoples disappointment comes from

Yea it really is. I'm surprised, some people are being real harsh on it. I don't think it's as bad as its user reviews say, but it does leave a bit on the table for sure
