This is incredibly well made both in pacing and creativity
ALRIGHT I GET IT. THE GAME HAS SOME HORROR IN IT I GET IT I GET IT CAN YOU SHUT UP AND MAKE AN ORIGINAL FUCKING VIDEO
Creepy batman video game
I really love Arkham Knight’s stealth because the enemies seem smarter than other games😂 (except for those that gotta be done on the Batmobile, fucking hate them.)
In BTAS, at least, Batman is very intimately aware of the ongoings at the asylum and even advocated for the removal of Lyle Bolton (Lock-Up) from Arkham's payroll after it became apparent that he was abusive towards the inmates. He also is pretty supportive in a number of the "villain tries to reform" episodes and even successfully redeems Ventriloquist. So that's at least one iteration of Batman shown to care. I think generally, the animated Batmen do care. It only gets sketchier when you start getting into the grittier depictions. To go back to the game, I know you're not really supposed to think about the bad guys in Arkham Asylum as much of anything other than bad guys. They're pretty one-dimensionally evil when it comes to their actions, with Harley even trying to trick you and trap you if you wind up feeling pity for her. But, at the same time, seeing the environment they live in and hearing the Arkham staff talk about them as if they're not even human always kinda felt uncomfortable to me. Even Aaron Cash, a guy you're supposed to like. For example, it's wild that they just take Killer Croc and throw him in the sewers, just occasionally doing food drops. It's one of those things that I think makes Asylum feel a bit more like a standalone game rather than a part of its own universe, because Croc seems a lot more normal/curable in Origins and pitiable in Knight where he's shown helping the other inmates of Iron Heights in combat and even shown sympathy by others for the inhumane treatment he goes through on that airship.
It's not a stealth game at all but I've found baldur's gate 3 does it fairly well at least. If you can manage to stay out of sight and place your characters right stealth can save you from tough-as-nails battles (i was able to clear the entire outside of the goblin camp with Astarion's backstabbing alone) but to do that you have to be creative and careful with how you move. It's tactical in its own way, which is an extension of the combat system in Itself. By utilising stealth skills you can take out enemies that otherwise give you trouble, and because only the characters that are spotted in a moment are pulled into a combat encounter, if you manage to stealth your way through with one party member, that party member essentially has freedom of movement outside the encounter. You can pickpocket items off of enemies to make persuading them easier. There's a gnome in the underdark that stole a bunch of very potent gunpowder, and you can talk her down peacefully- but you can also engage her in conversation and have a stealthed party member steal the gunpowder off of her. Which she actually comments on if you do it. I really like how bg3 did stealth as an alternative option, because it feels like it has been thought through enough to not be relegated as a secondary option, and i don't think it's boring in a game like that, it is slow, but bg3 isn't a fast paced game to begin with, so I think it doesn't slow down noticably in stealth. Also love how you can turn into animals to simply walk through a blockade, but whilst in animal form you're vulnerable, can't speak to people, and it takes a wildshape charge to do, so it's not a viable option everywhere, but it is in some cases. I love stealth games, I've got the mark of the outsider tattooed on my shoulder, and my favourite aspects of AC2, Brotherhood & revelations have always been the social stealth. Moving from crowd to crowd, finding the spots on the rooftop and plotting out the best route through the guards, sure their AI isn't that sophisticated, but i had more fun planning out stealth routes than chaining one-hit-kills in a combat encounter. I sneak and steal my way through skyrim every time i can, I enjoy the slow paced reward of not having to engage in combat outright. Dishonored did it incredibly and i miss it. Probably not the most cohesive comment, i mainly wanted to talk about how much I like the way bg3 tackles optional stealth. Great video
Stealth games are turbo based. HOWEVER. You need the game to actually be about stealth, not having some random ass sequences here and there or allowing some playing style that pretends to mimick stealth. Nah, you either go balls deep on it, or dont try. But when they get it right god is it satisfying. COMMANDOS and desperado 3 are prime examples of what stealth top down should be about. The xcom variant, non RTS top down, invisible ink. Stealth still exists as a genre, just most people cannot find the time to enjoy and play or go for the challenge and they just dont jive with It. If you are a hardcore stealth fan, there are still options out there and obviously the classic. Commandos 2 is the absolute peak imho. Splinter cell and thief is what 3d stealth should be about. You can argue with me all you want. I just want to clarify before hand, anyone Who argues needs to know they are objectively wrong. And thats okay. Just be aware of It.
I absolutely adore the flow of Fromsoft games, the slow progression and a vague pointer to which direction you have to go are nice. What I dont like are fromsoft questlines especially in Elden Ring. Having to find 1NPC in the entirety of Liurnia its tedious and a pain in the ass. While some are obvious to find like Nepheli others like Hiyetta are ridiculous dude to how weirdly ticked away they are. Especially with the reality of, "oh you didnt talk to this ncp iin the middle.of FuckYouVille? Well thats a shame theyre dead now, try again.next playthrough"
Uh…where the fuck did you get the idea Scarecrow went nuts because he lost his wife and daughter? That’s not his backstory in any continuity.
@SirenChats it's his backstory in this game based on the interview tapes. Although as someone pointed out, that may have been influenced by the toxin he was testing on the doctors. Either way, it's a connection that's made in the game itself
@ Uh…dummy, that was CRANE experimenting on HIS doctor. He had jacked the interview. It ends with guards breaking in, subduing Crane and horrified by what he had done to the poor guy.
@@AsadAnjum The first interview you collect for Crane is him experimenting on Dr. Combs. Only interviews two to four are interviews with Scarecrow himself.
i liked space and dinos as a kid, now im autistic
love the video, but trust me pal, the last thing we need in Suicide Squad is sexy, zesty joker 😂😭
Jokers cell was in maximum security. Which is the section of Arkham we don't bet access to. Joker rides the cell there after we first encounter the titan thug and it has a heart attack. Keep in mind how in the first game we go deeper and deeper into Arkham at the start when escorting joker to show how they want to ensure joker doesn't get out this time. Also in Arkham knight Bruce throws joker into a similar cell in his mind and locks him away in it. Joker was being sent to maximum security and going to be locked away deep and far.
I mean... Finns drink coffee the most in the world.... I think the Alan Wake's coffee fever is just easter egg about that
The same thing could be said for RPGs as well. Nowadays if it doesn't have 100+ hours of "content" (Bloated pointless collectables included) then it's considered a bad RPG. If it doesn't have 50+ skills, it's a bad RPG (Which a lot of the time now the skills are just +10% damage to Glorbs or some crap instead of interesting skills.) If it doesn't have character customization, it's an bad RPG. (Not talking about just changing hair but whole characters) If you can't romance everyone it's a bad RPG. If you can't kill everyone it's a bad RPG. If you don't turn out to be the legendary hero of the story with no flaws & become a god, it's a bad RPG. If you don't have any flaws or become too powerful it's a bad RPG. It's sadly gotten to the point where if a game doesn't check every box for a lot of people then it's a bad game period. No leeway, no seeing the good in it & NO ONE must play the game or they are "fake gamers" or sell-outs or whatever else they wanna call people to make themselves seem better. I remember when Devs made games for the enjoyment of that genre of games for those gamers. If you liked action but didn't like horror dead space while an amazing game probably wasn't for you. If you liked story rich, dialogue heavy slow games you obviously wouldn't buy a Call of Duty or Battlefield. If you liked tactical, think outside the box games you probably enjoy X-Com or Age of Empires. Not every game needs to be accessible to everyone or enjoyable to everyone.
Gamergate was the revealing of how woke activists use games to push their destructive ideology on gamers and then call them bigots for rejecting it. Sweet Baby Inc. is one of the worst grifters that does this.
Im glad I stumbled on this video, Great editing! and I love all your jokes
Very well-made video and I appreciate that it didn't simplify things down to Batman being bad because he doesn't kill. However, I have a few things I don't agree with and work was entirely too slow to prevent me from writing them out. Sorry in advance. Batman has to put limits on himself because he's already an illegal vigilante for just being Batman. Taking a more active role in how Arkham is run would probably spill over into something like terrorism if he did it it by force or make him Gotham's Lex Luthor if he just started buying facilities like Arkham. As much of a control freak Batman is, it's only with the illegal vigilante crap that can become Red Hood if left unchecked, while Batman would much prefer Gotham be able to make its own decisions and not be dependent on him forever. Batman's seen these villains commit horrible crimes for vague reasons, so I think his attitude towards the likes of Zsasz and his doctor are just telling the doctor that she's being too conventional or trusting of someone who needs extra vilgilance. Batman's paranoid enough to make contingency plans to take down his friends, so I don't see why he shouldn't be stern with his villains, especially when he's not saying they need to be lobotomized, etc. Batmam pours a LOT of money into the city and still can't sleep most nights because there's a new crime going on or the Justice League needs him. Why can't Gotham's own government and concerned citizens pick up the legislative end of things to make sure things are run better, especially after Batman already cleaned up the police and politicians? Just as Serious House depicts Batman out of character as being hypocritical, most other stories show him taking active interest in reforming the villains that try or are especially close to him, one commenter here even pointing out that Serious House ends with the coin Batman gave Two-Face ending bad-side up but Harvey lets Batman leave anyway. The guy who believed in himself enough to shoot Darkseid certainly believes in people enough to recover and live worthwhile lives.
35:08 I just checked this bug in the game, and yes - it really happens in the game if you go outside with detective mode enabled. However, now another question arises - is this really a glitch in the game, or is there some kind of feature that Rocksteady did intentionally...
I think Persona 5 stealth is great, it gives you a good advantage, and can save you resources but waiting is to op. The perfect Stealth section in a game for me would be in Metroid Dread with the E.M.M.I.
We already have a sexy Joker. Her name is Harley Quinn
They're not gargoyles, but rather grotesques.
new batman retrospective for me to watch, HELL YEAH
I mean the dinosaurs died from an astroid and that got me into space
Excellent analysis! It’s always been one of my favorite things about Asylum (and City as well to a similar extent), how much of the actual “story” of the game is baked into the scenery. You’ve done an amazing job covering it all here!
I have a problem with external noises and i sleep with headphones on. The amount of Arkham Asylum videos I've fell asleep to over the years is definitely in the double digits. Here's one for tonight. Thanks!
44:20 I think it's important to remember what happens at the very end of the book when Batman gives Harvey his coin back. Harvey flips it to decide whether or not to let Batman leave alive. Ultimately, Batman is let go, but in a later panel, we see that the side the coin landed on was the scarred side, the side which indicated that he was supposed to die. In the end, Harvey didn’t rely on the coin to make that choice, he let Batman leave by his own free will. Turning to the deck of tarot cards, arranged in a house of cards he remarks, “Who cares for you? You’re nothing but a pack of cards,” before knocking it over, showing that he doesn't need these things to make decisions anymore. This is actually a rather hopeful ending, that even despite all of the horrors of Arkham, there is still a chance for rehabilitation. Overall though, great video, great game, and great comic. Cheers!
The "who cares, you're nothing but a pack of cards" is also an Alice in Wonderland quote. Such a nice touch.
@@velloceti6898 Yeah. There are a lot of references like that throughout the book. Grant Morrison’s script in the back of the reissues helps a lot with finding them all.
i’ve watched 15 years worth of videos about this game and this is easily top 3. fantastic analysis my friend!
Shit I was the dinosaur kid..... Gravel is alright though
I find it amazing how you and Monty Zander had such a similar outline of video, yet how extremely different each video is. Insane amount of detail and research in this man. Can’t wait to see more
@ddl3718 I'll be honest and say I became aware of the Monty video about halfway through scripting, checked it out out of curiosity and turned it off after about 5 min because I was worried it would effect the direction of mine too much. I'm glad you found there to be enough differences here, since I was a little worried about the overlap
IDK, I think Asad has a nicer voice than Lando, although I resent being made to pick 😤
17:00 jokers cell is in the the intensive treatment where the first titan fight is, you see his sell in knight its one of the hanging ones
This was a fantastic video! Albeit I would have to disagree with the idea that Batman was wrong in the comic when he disregarded the doctors choice to make two face go from a coin to a deck in order to “cure” him, when it’s shown there that all that has accomplished is that he feels so overwhelmed he can’t even go to the bathroom and soils himself constantly. Another default hat I really like is that even in such a bleak and hopeless comic, it’s Two Face himself the one that sees the hope in Batman and goes against his coin to let him be free at the end.
Rip comicstorian such a tragedy 😢
In arkham shadows they reveal how the Wayne's paid for the asylum to be built and then Wayne foundation pays for it to be reopen again after orgins. It's kinda funny how crucial batman and his family were for arkham but he doesn't really care that much about their treatment, only seems to care about Dr. Y young with bane but that's about it in asylum.
42:41 - 44:30 You've perfectly explained what I realized about Batman. What makes him pretty incompetent at his own self imposed mission of being a vigilante who "stops evil" isn't that he refuses to kill the bad guys, it's that he is very much okay with EVERYTHING else that can be done to those bad guys as long as they're kept alive, and we all know there are fates worse than death... I'm not sure if this has been explored in any iteration of this comic superhero, but it brings up an important question: Batman disagrees with killing villains, but does that mean he's a-okay with giving them other torturous fates as long as they're alive? If you know anything about "I have no mouth and I must scream", then you start to realize maybe Bruce SHOULD be taken somewhere far away from society like all the other villains.
No Batman is very much against torture and stuff along those lines. He might break some bones but he’s never gonna injure you in such a way that you won’t heal and recover
@@kylerpruitt1620That's good to know. I've seen some interpretations where he's actually very kind to those villains who do get redeemed or are trying to be, but those are mostly from the animated series (particularly with Harley Quinn and Ace). Meanwhile, darker interpretations don't give way to that comforting side of Batman/Bruce, and I think the one in Arkham Asylum (game) would fall into that category, since he sees through environment and audio log how many villains arent given proper treatment for true rehabilitation. We could make the assumption that he is affected by them and at the end of the game he forces changes to the asylum, but first of all, it's an assumption, and secondly, if he had made changes then I'm pretty sure we wouldn't see the exact same villains in the sequel games being just as bad as they always were (except for Ivy to an extent, she did sacrifice herself in Arkham Knight, but she only did it for the plantlife)
@100lovenana the games sadly don't rlly elaborate on any of this.
He is extremely against torture and is usually kinder to his enemies, the games just usually don’t elaborate that side of him. the Batman from the animated series is much closer to how he is in the comics than the Arkham games, although they are equally good adaptations of the characters in my opinion.
I do agree w/ the notion that stealth in modern gaming feels incredibly distilled, I just can't help but wonder why TLOU 2 is on this list when it's 100% a stealth first game that does the exact opposite of all your points of contention. Did we play the same game? I also never really liked the notion that breaking stealth should inherently feel wrong. Breaking stealth should certainly make things a bit more challenging, but as long as stealth is an equally valid and robust approach to a scenario, I think it's done it's job well, which I thought TLOU 2 nailed for its gameplay, personally.
I wonder what purple tastes like...
Why did i find out thru this video comicstorian died?? :( dude was my childhood
What’s the music at around the 14 minute mark?? Is that RE7?? It’s driving me insane that I can’t pinpoint it
This video deserves more views. The atmosphere of Arkham asylum is truly what makes the game so great. I hope you gain more subscribers bcs you deserve it.
The atmosphere is the only thing that makes it great the story is bland and is blatantly ablest and shows a frankly insulting and stigmatizing view of the mental issues that many face.
Fantastic video, I'm glad the algorithm brought me here! I've watched so many Arkham videos but there's always something new to say, truly a masterpiece.
Shit takes to long
32:00 I think that "baby proofing" a game is for sure the worse way of designing a game. I have no qualms with saying it is objectively worse and the hands off approach is better. If you're looking to make anything that best suits EVERYONE, you'll end up having no audience at all. In the same way, I play games like the souls series or hollow knight not fearing that I'll miss something, because it's my lived experience and if I scurry off to a guide because I'm "only" at 43% completion in the black egg temple on my first playthrough, it undermines everything. People fear too much the idea of missing out. The developer fears their work will go unnoticed if a secret is "too secret" and makes sure there are no real secrets, and the player fears that they "didn't experience" enough and ends up experiencing nothing
I disagree off the fact that some of the most celebrated games in the world with the largest fanbases are those which either tell you exactly what to do/where to go or give you checklists to complete (see: all of Sony's games). If they truly didn't speak to people then it makes no sense why they garner so much love and such strong fanbases. I believe that YOU may not enjoy games that try to minimize friction, but that doesn't reflect everyone's preferences, which means that you can't say either direction is the objectively better/worse way of doing it, just that it's better/worse for you and someone like you. And that's alright. But personally I like Hollow Knight and Insomniac's Spiderman equally in different ways, and I'd rather see both types of games in the world than just 1
@@AsadAnjum Sony games aren't exactly the most stellar example imo. Those are moreso movies and consequently degrade the medium of gaming as a whole. Gaming is an interactive medium, if the "Interactive" part is all but stripped away by hand holding, there is no point in even making the media in the form of a game in the first place. I'm not necessarily against a more linear experience or even games with forgiving mechanics, but it still need to be an "experience" in the first place. An example of the degradation I despise would be the newer pokemon games. In the past you'd build a team and based on your personal preferences you'd find certain parts of the game easier or harder by nature, gaining attachments as a result of your toil. Now you can consistently just spam "A" the whole game and sweep every trainer regardless of your team. There's no journey to be had, no connections to form and nothing of value to be found in these titles
as a dinosaur kid but grown up into a GD player... no thats not real lmao (well i was kinda both so yea)
Incredible video !!! Loved watching it! Also will you maybe an arkham city one?
Absolutely, although it's probably gonna be a yearly Halloween thing so you'll have to wait some time 😅

Love this! Please do Arkham knight! ☺️♥️🥰💕 what’s your thought on Arkham shadow? 🎉❤😊
Haven't played arkham shadow but I want to at some point, it looks really damn good. And definitely gonna do one on knight eventually
I was a massive fan of deadcells almost from the start, and was tentatively excited to hear there was a second game in the works. However after looking at windblown, I don't see any of what I loved from deadcells whether it be in gameplay or vibe. It really does look like it was assassinated for windblown, and I am just incredibly disappointed.
man, i LOVE stealth games. aragami, styx, theif, dishonored, all these games made me love this genre, and i really hope there will be some kind of games that treat stealth as a GENRE, not a FEATURE
Aggressive stealth can be really fun however most stealth mechanics in games can be janky. Also, you seem to have to move very slowly. The new Spiderman games are pretty good when it comes to stealth because of the gadgets. What I mean by janky is that the sometimes you can get caught when a enemy just turns around randomly when you attack. However being able to use gadgets like spiderman or watchdog's 1 adds variety and playability. The gaming industry should make a aggressive stealth system where you can enter a room and incapacitate 10 men at once. Similar to assassins creed and batman games but with no delays in animation. You can use ninjas as a example, they can blow poison darts on enemies, knock people out, set something on fire yo alert the guards to move towards it. Using misdirection as a weapon. Planting evidence to set someone up, or bomb near a body and wait for them to trigger it. Setting up other traps. Using parkour to run and escape. Using speed to get in and get out. Smoke bombs to cover your escape, flashbombs and flashbanged to disorient. Paralyzing throwing needles and bombs. Using many people in a stealth mission simultaneously to achieve a goal or outcome. History is a good example of this.
