I was completely absorbed by every image on every page. It is a reminder to me that any single thing in this world can become art, it’s all in the way we see it. This is a remarkable sketchbook.
This was so inspiring (and relaxing)! I love the fact that there's no narration and no music. He just let the imagery speak for itself. Just wonderful!
It was 6 minutes and 21 seconds of pure joy and enlightenment. What David Hockney inspires me the most, beyond his close inspections of art history and immense curiosity, is his endless passion about making images. That is something I have had as a kid but lost because of other occupations. I have recently decided to quit my job and dedicate myself to this passion. Thank you for sharing this video.
as someone else mentioned, THANK YOU for not feeling the need to add loud obnoxious background music to this. very INSPIRING!! i draw, but I have nothing like that sketchbook. NOTHING.
Makes me want to pick up my pen and inks and make a point of drawing something at least every other day. Like that I can hear him breath as he flips through. Very peaceful. And then the loud intrusions to snap me out of it. The whole video is art. Thankyou for posting and Thankyou David 🌻
SO nice, seeing an artist still showing to the world that to draw is an unique tool - brain, eyes, hands, pleasure, sensations, and also a post-aesthetic pleasure to the viewer.
Amazing. Thank you for sharing. Design, composition, mark making - all this accomplished in a sketchbook with the simplest tools. That’s inspiring and humbling at the same time.
I have a mountain of old sketchbooks, somewhere down the road I stopped using sketchbooks and now I use any old piece of paper and shove them all into a folder. Thanks for the inspiration to get back to sketchbooks. I’m going to get myself a new one but not any old sketchbook, it will be the size of a shoe box.
Loved the guiet simplicity of this view into the private space of a great painter. It was a real privilege. A finished and framed painting in a public gallery is an artist with their clothes on. A view of their sketch book is like seeing them naked. It's personal and private. He is exposing himself in such an intimate and vulnerable way. I feel privileged to have had a peek into his soul where he works out his thoughts and feelings. It pained me to see his arthritic hands, especially the left one. Not to put down foot and mouth painters, but an artist needs, not only a good eye, but also a flexible hand. Sketch on everyone.
I love that it is a visual diary. I love the size of the sketchbook, not your average A5 but much larger! And I'm grateful for the silence. Thank you so much for sharing! Your sketchbook is an inspiration!
Hi Iris ... I noticed on your "About" page that you are an artist, too. Would love to see some of your artwork if you've posted them somewhere. I imagine as a horticulturalist, plants and nature might be a subject you create art about. Another question (two actually) I have ... did you record the video of Hockney sharing his sketchbook and are you friends with him?
I have loved David Hockney for as far back as I can remember engaging with art. He is one of my idols, a true genius, and probably our greatest living artist. I once had the pleasure of meeting him at the Barbican Centre when, for some reason, he suddenly made his way over to the group of people I was with. I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!!
Thankyou. I'm an artist aswell and the looking through my sketch books and paintings like this. It was wonderful to see someone else's work. Thank you again for sharing. ✌❤🐈🇨🇦
This is so inspiring. I can never replicate the wonder that you create….but maybe when all is done, a series would let my own style emerge. Never to compare, but maybe I could do something i was proud of. I love your work.
Wow!!!'Yhis video was so very "Inspirational", I have the feeling as if I'm on a tour . Its something because it brings an individual close to him as if we're having this conversation. DAVIDHOCKNEY IS A VERY TALENTED AND GIFTED MAN ALIVE TODAY,AND THERE ARE A FEW MORE ,BUT HE DEFINITELY STANDS OUT FROM THOUSANDS.
Phenomenal. His commitment to his work is inspiring, and the sketchbooks are intimate travels into his thinking about space and line. The checkered tablecloth is icing on the cake.
Wow Thank you so much! So inspiring❤️ saw your expo in Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam! Wonderful! So nice to see these sketches. I will definitely pick his up again to try. I cannot draw but this is veryinspiring. I stopped when iI couldn’t draw something! Biut it is all about doing and impressions , thanks again!🎨❤️
5:13 one of your best!!! I'm working on draws in human body and unless it seems contradictory, including a crowded space or a people reunion in a drawing, help to give vitality to every picture....Drawing more people in one picture give me a vision of what is my progress, not everybody are "good draw" but if I succes in only one ....it give power to continue improving.
You have a treat in store for you! He's done SO many different types of art - polaroid photographs, California pool paintings, many drawings/paintings of his dachshunds - so much beautiful work in his lifetime. I've followed his work for many years and have always loved it!
@@michelepastele5347 I have been watching many interviews with him and seen a great many of his sketches and paintings online. What a brilliant conversationalist and interesting man, his art is simply amazing! Thank you again for posting!
Nice video. As others have commented _no sound_ Just the flickering of the pages.... _cause_ *music would take away* .... *Audio is More powerful* than the 2d sketches. Thank you
I was completely absorbed by every image on every page. It is a reminder to me that any single thing in this world can become art, it’s all in the way we see it. This is a remarkable sketchbook.
no it's all in the way he draws it, not how we see it
I totally agree with you. It's about vision.
#teamcrumb I think you misunderstand my comment...
A privilege to see David Hockney’s sketch book.
I love how he’s so gentle with flipping the pages 🥺
This was so inspiring (and relaxing)! I love the fact that there's no narration and no music. He just let the imagery speak for itself. Just wonderful!
Thank you so much!
Yes and there is a loved one always present.
I was about to write the same thing! Thanks for letting us hear the white noise.
Love this so much - I’m glad there isn’t any distracting music
So nice to have no background music or people talking. A simple pleasure to look at a great artists work..thankyou
Agreed! I can't stand the constant noise in this world.
These hands who made that art, but that art created by his soul . Just beautiful!! thank you
One of the simplest and most interesting videos on the internet. Its a mirror for the simplicity of Hockney's draftsmanship actually.
It was 6 minutes and 21 seconds of pure joy and enlightenment. That’s a very kind and inspiring comment 💜 All the best
Checking in to see if you were able to quit your job and resume making art. I hope you did and were massively successful.
as someone else mentioned, THANK YOU for not feeling the need to add loud obnoxious background music to this. very INSPIRING!! i draw, but I have nothing like that sketchbook. NOTHING.
Mr. Hockney is brilliantly creative. He is original. His art has evolved as he aged. An amazing man and artist. He is also fascinating to listen to.
One of the greatest artists of all time...naturally gifted with a transcendent perspective.
This goes to show- draw what you see-whatever your see- just draw
Las épocas de edad media 😱

Wonderful to be able to meander through these like this. Thank goodness for the .25 playback speed option.
I love his drawings so much!!!! Thank you for this video!
SO nice, seeing an artist still showing to the world that to draw is an unique tool - brain, eyes, hands, pleasure, sensations, and also a post-aesthetic pleasure to the viewer.
Mr. Hockney is such an amazing artist. One of our living master painters!
Just phenomenal, how I would love to (one day) own an original work by David Hockney. He is in my opinion an honest, true artist.
The man is a genius. These are beautiful stunning imaginative lively and glorious
Wonderful sketch book- each page is a window into a new world.
Breathtaking.. No mistakes.. I fear the sketches are in first place..out do it or go down. Just perfect.. Really really sunken treasure
Favorite painter! Living legend... I feel motivating to do something like this ☕

He is still alive, still producing, he is installed in a charming house in Normandie (france).

This book just left me speechless😍 even though I prefer abstract art the simple yet real in the sketches speaks volumes.

Superbes en particulier les vues de Beuvron en Auge en Normandie! Merci pour le partage.
Love this!!! Thank you!
Thank you 💕 for sharing
Very spontaneous drawings and almost like a diary.
I love your work. It is difficult to capture the planned randomness of nature. I especially like the trees and bushes drawings.
Lovely! David has got also an amazing video about XV Century painting, "The Secret Knowledge".
Superb!! No talking , just seeing !
Lovely ❤️. And thanks for the silence (apart from the two scary sounds in the second half).
it literally scared me so bad
@@emmae6711 oh I’m glad I’m not the only one ! Horrible wasn’t it !
i can only imagine how heavy is it to bring this big book everywhere with yourself) very inspiring sketches
He probably had several smaller books bound together when finished using them. You can see it is in two sections anyway.
You can just feel his passion for looking…what a MASTER PAINTER!
Merci pour ce partage de grand cœur.
Nice video.
