CONCACAF would do well to expand this tournament for future cycles, bringing in additional depth from other confeds at all levels of competition. I'm thinking of small wealthy European countries that don't get enough out of their UEFA Nations League experience- San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, or Liechtenstein. I'm also thinking of- well, the entirety of Oceania. I think that Israel would be a good fit for this- granted, they might not have a ton of availability on their calendar, but this could present an opportunity for Israel to cap-tie some Jewish players that are eligible to play for Israel but they don't live there. There's a fair number of African and Asian countries that may be interested as well. Imagine if Ghana and Nigeria were involved in this Nations League competition. Both of them would probably qualify for the Gold Cup, and both of them are likely to play against the US, Canada, and Mexico throughout this process. The Nations League competition could improve its depth quite a lot, and the Gold Cup itself could become a lot more interesting.
In terms of how this would work, I will suggest that high-quality stadiums in the US, Canada, and Mexico be used by visiting national teams as their de facto home stadiums. What this would mean, in the aggregate, is that a much higher percentage of Nations League games would be played in world class stadiums while more tickets are also being sold in high value markets. And along with that, by implication, a smaller percentage of total games played will happen in trash stadiums with a mud pit for a field. Those will still happen, of course, but this will represent a much smaller percentage of total gameplay.
This is how you market CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup to the entire world- you get a substantial portion of the entire world directly involved in it. I would love to see a fourth tier to this Nations League situation, along with much improved depth. Let's bring in everyone that will benefit from this, as long as it isn't a national team that will dominate the whole thing and win it on a regular basis. So the top tier of Europe and South America is pretty much going to sit this one out- along with countries like Iran, if Israel is involved in any way. Also, if it was up to me, I would be inviting Taiwan and Hong Kong to compete on a regular basis so China will probably choose to sit that out too. In other words, political considerations aside, this could be a really global thing where almost everyone has a chance to get involved.
