*As usual, Wen puts out an excellent **MyBest.Tools** well made product at a very reasonable price. Cast iron, portable, table top lathe. Pen turning with ease. An excellent purchase.*
I am sure you will enjoy your lathe for a long time. Just a tip, use a mallet when hammering in a drive center not a steel hammer which will mushroom the end over time,
I enjoyed hearing you talk with enthusiasm about your lathe. I have looked for a year at little, big and used because of your discount code I bought the g7766 got it put together today and you are right it is massive.. thank you mike
Thank you for this. Just got my grizzly 0733 today and wanted to see a test run. Still need to assemble mine (as we had to take it apart to get it in the basement) tomorrow. After watching this, I can hardly wait to try mine out. I have upgraded from an old craftsman lathe.
I am envious to say the least. That is a wonderful lath and well built. I just unloaded a new band saw from Grizzly. It too is massively heavy. I am just now trying to finish up the tuning of the saw platform and blade. I am giddy about using it. You have a great shop, and I am happy for you. Have fun.
I just received my Grizzly G0462 Lathe last week and am waiting for the delivery of my G0513X2 today. I removed the Head piece off of the Lathe, added the legs to the Base Rails and then reinstalled the Head piece. Your Lathe is heavier so that might not worked as easy for you. Can't wait to get everything set up. I have Oak lumber drying for almost two years in my backyard that I am going to build things out of. Woodworking is an Addiction.
WOW!! Linn congratulations! Grizzly is a great company and stands behind their products. I just bought their mini track saw with a 6" blade for my smaller projects and just love it. I so would love to have a lathe that I could turn large bowls on, so I can't wait to see what you can produce on that size lathe. Have fun!!
Way to go Girl! you will have lots and lots of fun on this lathe. Congrats on the sponsorship from Grizzly - they make some fine equipment. Remember "Woodturning 101" with Carl?
Congrats, I have a G0800 and really like it, had it for about 3 years and turn something almost everyday. I selected mine because of the shape of the headstock. I felt like the square shape as you have would limit my ability to turn from the headstock end. it's all about what you get used to. Have fun with your little lathe, lol. Take care, Larry
Very informative video. Thanks. I used your discount code and got 10% off on a G0766 just like yours. Gonna pick it up tomorrow. I bet I enjoy it as much as you enjoyed yours. Thanks for the code!
Love it. I have a large wood planer, and am now wanting a lathe. Doesn’t have to be that big. But would be cool if it was. Perfect for making table legs.
That's a very nice piece of equipment you have there Linn , the machine lathe you have opted for will probably take care of almost everything that I can think of that would be considered household objects , I didn't know those machines were that heavy, good idea with the blocks picking it up . Look forward to seeing you in the next video.
Very nice lathe. I always use a rawhide mallet to set the drive. I notice that your left hand is UP on the tool, rather than DOWN--not sure why but I'd think having your left hand down on top of the gouge is safer. I have a Conover (no longer in business) lathe with an 8-foot bed. My bed is two poplar planks, held by two heavy cast iron legs. The legs have a place to install a shelf, where you can put sand bags or store wood to gain extra weight and stability. The reverse switch on the DC motor is great when you are finishing up or polishing a project. Warning! Turning can be very addictive--you think a half hour passed but really it was 4 hours!
It’s crazy how expensive this lathe is now. When I bought mine it had just come out and they had a 15% off discount for military and Veteran’s. Got my lathe for $1400. It’s been a great lathe. I only regret I never got a hold of their G0800 before it was discontinued
I hope you like it.. I have bought from grizzly since 1984.. great products.. 3 years ago I made my own lathe.. it is variable speed bowl lathe..weighs in at 450 pounds.. the inverter take single phase in and inverts out-triple phase.. triple phase can be tuned to variable speed.. single phase can not.. my lathe accepts up to 38 inches in diameter.. much fun..
My cost for my lathe about 700$. It’s just great..most expensive part was the inverter at 190$. But buying grizzly is smart.. 90% of all big woodworking tools are made in China...they are well made and their precision is beyond what powematic used to make here..now since 1988 most major manufacturers in the us have their tools made in China and then hang big prices on them., I love grizzly much..
Glad to see a window in your new(ish) garage. I always kept meaning to say you should think about having as much outside and natural views as possible. I am probably wrong but i suspect you are like myself, i love working in the enviroment outdoors. If this is the case a future project could be to build a canopy on the garage and have some tools on wheels to work in the air?
Where there is a will, there is a way, and you were getting that lathe up on the stands. Love your work. Keep it coming and the Likes will come from this loyal subscriber. I've been very impressed with your work since one of your older videos and you needed to flatten a table top (I think it was) you'd glued up. You grabbed your plane and went to it! You are a Maker.
9 months in, how are you enjoying the Lathe? A couple of weeks ago I took delivery of a Laguna REvo 24/36 which from the looks of yours is a comparable machine, with similar leg size, weight and casting, even the Bed Stops look the same. I'm planing on doing a review video after I've used mine for a little while to give me time to find things I think can or should be improved.
I was looking forward to see this video it came out nice.. I want to lean more about turning as it seem like a great tool to have on your belt. I like you had I have a small lathe, but I feel I need to learn more before I jump up to a bigger lathe. Look forward to seeing what else you are doing with it. I will say you are a very clever young lady. I am also glad the move from OR to VA worked out for you both all the best Lin.,
For anyone interested in this machine I am picking mine up tomorrow and for your info Grizzly is still honoring her 10% discount code,Thank You for the review and the discount!
Hi Darby, first I want to say I enjoy watching your videos, great information from the many years following you. My question is I was an avid wood turner for some years ago but had gotten away from it do to my wood shop at the time was very small 11’ by 11’. So I had to give it up for room, but now I have a bigger shop now and want to get back into wood turning. I then remembered when you did this video on your grizzly lathe. Now to the point since you have owned your grizzly lathe how has it been for you were there any issues. I am looking at a few lathe’s now laguna, powermatic, and grizzly G0766 trying to figure out which to get. I do like grizzly products which I have bought quite a few. Thank you again for your videos, great information.
A few years ago I bought a Grizzly 72 inch belt grinder, the knife maker model. I've been very pleased with it and found it to be good quality at a decent price point. The only anmnoying thing was the set up. Everything comes packed with heavy grease to prevent rust which was annoying to get rid of. The assembly was pretty straightforward but you definitely needed to read the manual.
It looks like the head will slide down to the end if you remove the tail stock which means you could turn a big bowl or plate off the end at more than 22". Is that right?
LINN !!! So wonderful. Keep the wood shaving as I am going to move into your shop and I can use those for bedding. I love making wood shavings and saw dust. I need to go now as I am afraid I will short out my keyboard from drooling. Super cool....
Learning the skew is definitely a different skill. Can be very challenging and a bit scary at first when you get those grabs! I love the skew, but you gotta stay very focused. Hope you master it soon.
I don't know a lot about wood lathes, but I do know metal lathes. They need to be leveled very precisely. Do wood lathes need as much precision in the set up? Just wondering. Thank you.
You guys did such a nice job finding that property. Everything seems perfect from your main shop and your smaller shop/office, acreage. Plus Virginia. It's all really starting to pay off.
With all the new toys you are getting for your new shop, you need to get a portable gantry style crane, or even an engine lift (they are cheap). Maybe a pallet jack as well.
Greetings, I just saw the unboxing video of your G0766. Now since you’ve had it a year what are your thoughts, I am considering it for my shop. Thank you.
I tried moving a ~800 pound metal lathe into a trailer once, by myself! lol, I could only get half of it in. I had to get a body builder to lift the heavy end, for us to load it!
I have this one and it's a great lathe except one thing don't use the stop pin in the hole to hold the spindle for changing chucks or anything else if you do the casting around the holes will break it is very weak in this area. Mine broke and I had to take it to a machine shop to have it fixed. So take care with this so it don't happen to you...
Buttons are so important! I was going to buy a fancy Bosch tool recently but when I tried it in the shop it had a horrible smushy membrane switch and it completely put me off.
When i have to move my grizzly lathe i just take off the head unit. That makes it a lot easier to move around. Just something to think about the next time you have to move it.
Kudos Linn. Come a ways since you and Darwin were knocking stuff together in your backyard in Oregon. You have moved to Virginia, with a compound of workshops and a now walking rugrat. But the measure of your progress is your sponsors. I've not met Grizzly in Aust., but it looks the job. My 40 years on the tools tells me that the sexier the tools, the better they work. That lathe does substantial, layout, features and finish rather well. How many followers to get Festool on board? Quite thrilling to watch. Thankyou.

Oh, I didn't watch your videos more than a year! In such hands this lathe will work a century!

If the tail stock was removed, could the head be moved to the end and used to make a larger table top or platter larger than the 22"?

A nice wood lathe, it must also be heavy or it will vibrate.
My son also does woodturning as a hobby.
Wait wait, I'm all confused. How did you get it to its final position after assembling it? You commented on how it wouldn't budge, but then moved it.
I think they moved the whole house & workshop - probably easier than moving the lathe! :D
Exactly.
Does it come with what's needed to start right off or did you have to order a separate chuck?
Looks like a fairly heavy strong unit, buy yourself a engine hoist, I use mine all the time and it has never lifted an engine
Buttons are so important! I was going to buy a fancy Bosch tool recently but when I tried it in the shop it had a horrible smushy membrane switch and it completely put me off.
Congratulations! Will you now have to run a project to build a storage cabinet to store the lathe tools, on the wall behind the lathe? :-)
Haven't decided exactly what yet...
When i have to move my grizzly lathe i just take off the head unit. That makes it a lot easier to move around. Just something to think about the next time you have to move it.

Thanks for watching! Haven't had any issues.
Your tips is very helpful.
Linn, you can actually turn larger than that 22 inch rating, by moving the motor head down to the extreme right and removing the tail stock. Then you can turn off of the end of the lathe, up to the distance from the floor to the spindle center. You would have to get a tool holder on a tripod or stand to do it, but it could be done. Jon

Does the headstock come off? Were there any leveling feet?
Does this have a copy piece ?
Linn, the fearless.
Sweeeeet acquisitions!
Felicitaciones!!! Seguramente harás cosas geniales con tu nueva herramienta!.
does the head unit just spin in place so you can turn a big bowl or do you have to take it off, turn it around and put it back?
It doesn't look like it'll spin (3:35 shows a tab sticking down into the space between the ways -- same as my Powermatic). I suppose you could take the head unit off and turn it around, but the recommended procedure is to remove the tail stock and slide the head unit down to that end. Tail stock isn't nearly as heavy as the head unit, and you don't have to worry about wiring, etc.
