This was probably the worst (Best) lighting video I’ve ever seen. This guy has no idea (knows exactly) what he is talking about. Everyone involved should probably drop dead (keep making this quality content that informs and entertains)! In all seriousness, this is great, keep it up!
Well, in an actually lighting course you can probably give people this same info in 10 minutes at the start of the semester but then it will take them the rest of the semester to actually learn how to use it and understand it. So anyone who watches this video might have the info but they're still going to have to go out and put in practice to really understand it and own it. Please note: this is not a critique of the video. It's well thought out straight to the point and nicely done.
he got a couple of stuff wrong, there's no such thing as a standard key light position, he got the definition of keylight wrong, a keylight is the main source of light. he got flat lighting wrong. Flat lighting is when your subject is evenly lit. The light doesn't have to be close to the camera. There are no placement rules for lights, if you're in a lighting course in college they would of told you this. This is the same reason why people keep calling every camera move a pan
@@AnimeZone247 I don't think he got them wrong. He explained the reasons behind the placement suggestions and also said these are guidelines. For instance he specifically says what flat lighting is and then gives the EASIEST way to get it in a 'text book' situation. But, that IS why trying to learn lighting from just a 10 minute video is only going to teach you the rudimentary 'standards' to fully understand it you've got to put it into practice, which is also what he says as well.
As a 20 year video professional, I appreciate that you're not another goofball youtuber who thinks they know a thing or two. Solid info here covering the foundational basics of good lighting in one concise video - and a nice refresher for us veterans :D Well done!! Btw, the most common use of "High Key" lighting is in News studios; soft, flat, and always even, so they don't have to adjust the lighting whenever different anchors and guests are on set.
One of the most well written, well Illustrated and superbly presented videos on TH-cam. This is not only a master class on lighting, it's a master class on how to write, shoot and edit instructional videos.
You explain lighting concept in just 10:42 min video which people take 4yrs to understand after learning from big institutes. Thank you sir so much for a great lighting lesson 🙏🙏🙏
When I came here and saw the "10 minute" length of the video, I immediately thought "oh no... clickbait!! As 10 minutes seems to be the magical length most clickbaiters strive for so they can trigger that 'second advertisement' in their video. But noooooo!! This was 10 minutes of pure, solid GOLD. Information-packed throughout with no filler to speak of. Most excellent!!! And wowzers -- I learned a few things as well (us old timers don't know it all). Thank you SO MUCH for putting together this content -- I know how much time and effort goes into making videos like this, so just know it's greatly appreciated.
Great video ;) How about how all the various settings your camera may have relate to various lighting environments, causes and effects sort of thing. Cheers.
the way you ended the video... earned you my sub!!! Absolutely awesome stuff. From a small youtuber in Ghana (africa) looking to do better! well done!!
I freaking love this channel! The mix between humor and education is spot on and I'm learning so much that film school never bothered to teach us. So I know I didn't follow the rules but I did subscribe and wanted to leave a positive comment! :P
Reason why we are all hunting TH-cam for lighting tutorials: it’s hard to find legitimate classes from professionals. This video was super helpful, thank you for the great content
I've watched at least a dozen videos on lighting this week (while trying to set up a rudimentary youtube studio). This was the best and most helpful by far. Thank you for taking the time to make it. You know you've got a winner when people watch it, and immediately watch it again. As I'm about to do! Also, your ending caught me off guard. I got a little chuckle out of that. Nice job friend. :-)
THE BEST LIGHTING TUTORIAL, I had to pause it to really absorb the in highly condensed information. Absolutely Brilliant, Genius, A*******************************. So many questions answered. The flashbacks from real movies were really helpful.
2 years of my master degree in film, not a single cinematography instructor touched based on the very detailed things that you have explained in this video, I will suggest my whole class to watch your lighting tutorial as they are directly related to films and practicality. Please keep creating amazing lighting tutorials as there is not a single youtube channel specializing on the film lighting.
This is the type of content you would find in a paid masterclass. Thank you so much for providing such high quality content for free. You guys honestly deserve so much more views and subscribers.
I agree with you but let's try to not overestimate the "go out and shoot" practice. Some basics are necessary to understand how to shoot properly and not everyone can learn from their mistakes.
That’s a very good point, mistakes aren’t worth anything if you don’t notice and improve. That being said, I’m pretty sure there are 1,458,494 mistakes I’m making on every shoot I haven’t even noticed yet. One at a time.
I was just about to say the same. Roger Deakins has been talking about this a lot. He is not trying to make pretty picture, he is trying to make realistic shots that fit with the story! :)
@@EpicLightMedia Agreed... Plus, not everyone has the opportunity to get in the head of an actual cinematographer/DP to understand what they're thinking about lighting a scene and what it does to move the story. Too many times youtubers show how a lighting is achieved but as far as why or what it does for the story, I don't see as much. I like how this video did some of that. :)
I don't care how long anyone has been in the business. It is a really good idea to watch a video like this to refresh oneself with the basics. I really Loved this video! It is a great refresher to what I learned nearly 30 years ago. And Thank You from the bottom of my heart. About that back light, You hit a home run with that one. That was great advice.
BRAVO!!! I'm so glad there is at least 2 of us that realizes many videos are made for this reason, and sadly it doesnt get noticed and the comments are raving over the generic, vague, and mostly common sense info given. Or a modified, free of copyright strike, Copied version of someone elses video.
It's refreshing to see videos about lighting, which like you said is way more important than the camera you're shooting on. Also lighting people and not banging on about "cinematic b-roll!" Thanks.
