First and second age middle earth are just so damned interesting. All that was, by the third age, are just legends, or songs...dim memories of what was once real. Reading the LOTR, you get the sense of loss...particularly among the elves but really among all the races. The cities, kingdoms, the mountains and forests, all that has passed. I guess its that memory and the sense of sadness that you can follow throughout the tale that's part of what makes it so compelling to me. Tolkien was brilliant.

I found the history of the first age so unbearably tragic that I could only ever manage it in small chunks, before having to abandon it again in despair. Utterly fascinating, yet unbearable - a unique combination (Tolkien was indeed brilliant).

I gotta admit I used to be only a very small Middle Earth fan introduced to it by the films, but the moment I started watching vids from this channel I became so hyped by everything of the first and second ages. Unfortunately that had the side-effect of not really caring so much anymore for the story material that brought me into this in the first place.

Michael Fisher, some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge. Alas, the Elder Days are gone. The Middle Days are passing. The Younger Days are beginning.

The lands of Beleriand and their history has become by FAR my favourite part of the legendarium. Strange to think that it was the Third Age and the events at the time of the War of the Ring that led me to fall in love with Tolkien's work in the first place. Honestly, once you dive into the incredible depths of the legendarium the events of the finding of the Ring and the War of the Ring become almost a footnote.

Too far east. It actually corresponds to Atlantis. The Shire in Middle Earth is roughly where England is in relation to the Old World (not a coincidence: a lot of people don't realise that LOTR is supposedly set in our own distant past, rather than on another planet) and Beleriand would have started a few hundred miles west of that. So in Tolkien's parallel universe, the Drowning of Beleriand and then of Numenor eventually gave rise to the myths of Atlantis, Noah's Flood, etc.

    • @bookmarksbowsprits1183

I don't actually think that Tolkien had Doggerland in mind necessarily, and I do know that Numenor is based on Atlantis, The Shire on England, etc. I also didn't state that although the majority of Doggerland was between Britain and Europe, there was also quite a bit of land west and surrounding/ connecting the British Isles, so its not that far off geographically.

It would no doubt have to be a series, and an anthology series at that.
At least we're getting parts of the Akallabêth in the Amazon series coming out soon. I assume it'll mainly be about the downfall of Nûmenor, which is what made me incredibly excited for the series. Perhaps if it's successful (and hopefully if it's good) they'll do another show about the actual Quenta Silmarillion

    • @redpilledtrooper7523
      @redpilledtrooper7523 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@lizardlegend42 Yeah but we all know the amazon show is a corporate entity handling the series, which means they will sell the corpse of old Tolkien himself in exchange for identity political boxes checked. It was even in the hobbit when there were lots of people in lake town that looked chinese.
I understand easterlings might look middle eastern, but I know this series is going to suck. They wanted to fit in Gandalf ( despite the istari not showing up until the third age) and if you look at the cast, they hardly look european/british/scandanavian.
I realise this is a gripe about ethnicity, but when they blatantly change it because it fits their grocery list, it pisses me off.
Even though the 6 peter jackson films arent perfect, they are the best we will get for a while, since there is no way that films like that would be filmed today.
The men of the west representing Duty, Honor and sacrificing themselves for the freedom of their people.
The quest for peace and the pursuit of happiness.
The biblical themes and the triumph over evil.
Its not a question of if, its a question of how amazon will butcher it.
The fall of Numenor should be epic. Here we have an island gifted to the Edain for their help in destroying Morgoth.
They are blessed with longer lives, greater height and more power and wisdom than other men.
Then their quest to vanquish Sauron slowly corrupts itself and eventually he is the one controlling Numenor and even having the men worship Morgoth instead of Eru Illuvitar.
This leads to Illuvitar sinking the island and Sauron losing his body.
The themes of the flood narrative and tower of babel as well as atlantis are seen here, and shows this twin rebellion of spirit and human against their creator and the consequences.
The irony of how their first king chose to be human and take the gift of man to die, and the later kings fear death and are deceived into thinking living in Valinor will make them immortal like the elves.
      All so sad.

I always imagine Beleriand to be much larger then Middle Earth of the Second and Third age, but these maps suggest otherwise. According to this map Mirkwood is about the same size of all major population centres and kingdoms in Beleriand. That would suggest that these maps should not be put together like this but they aren't accurate. When reading The Silmarillion it gives the impression that the region is way bigger then shown in this video. Its huge and it takes long periods of time to travel even between nearby kingdoms/lands.

It eats me away inside that we don't know more than we do about the lands of Middle-earth, including Beleriand. I've always had a strong fascination with southern Beleriand, south of the Falas, as that is where many of the Avari lived. It's also the part that connected Beleriand with Eriador including, Minhiriath, Enedwaith, and Drúwaith Iaur. Apparently southern Beleriand had its own unique dialect of Sindarin, and also it is whence much trade passed between Beleriand and other places of Middle-earth (such as Dorwinion), and whence many migrations occurred before, during, and after the First Age. Beren and Lúthien may have had many adventures in this region too as it was near their home. Interestingly, there must have been a greater degree of cultural continuity in this area between Beleriand and Eriador thanks to the lack of mountains. And yet, we unfortunately have no idea what happened to the Avari and other people and traders living here after the First Age. But trying to imagine it excites my imagination.

I subscribed to your channel. I honestly only really watch videos about Tolkien's world every once in a while. I know the films don't do the books justice according to many a Tolkien scholarly fan, but as someone whose brain seems somewhat allergic to books (maybe some bit of dyslexia?), the films have come to mean a lot to me. And every few years or so I find myself watching them again. That's when video's explaining Tolkien's world really comes into play for me. And time and again, I find that I appreciate your videos most of all. Most of the other youtube channels who make video's about Tolkien's world include a lot of their own opinions, wonderings, etc.. and even if at times you might include a bit of that, your videos always feel much more like a class in a way. Which is what I want when I go searching youtube for answers to questions about Tolkien's world. Even if you express opinions etc it always comes across to me that your primary focus is explaining as clearly as possible what Tolkien actually wrote, making the connections between his writings, etc And I very, very much appreciate it. If reading and retention of written words were a more fluid experience for me, I would read every book he wrote. But since my brain cringes at books, almost like the face of someone who has just smelled something rotten lol I'm very grateful for the videos you make, and the effort it takes for you to do it. Thank you so much.

I don't know why so many people dislike the Silmarillion. I absolutely LOVED it, and it really provides some great background (and world enhancing) for the LOTR universe. It would have made a great TV series actually, but the Tolkien estate holds the rights and I doubt they'll permit it in the near future given that Christopher Tolkien didn't like the LOTR film adaptions at all.
