  • Zanskar, a Tibet’s mountainous province, is home to one of the most isolated populations in the world. Because of the icy and snowy winter, for nearly 8 months, the inhabitants of the surrounding villages are completely disengaged from the world. While a new road is being built to link them to the other side of the mountain, they invite us to discover their daily habits. Between modernity and ancestral traditions, we follow their routines and ceremonies, from the barley harvest before the Great Winter to the wedding of one of the young women of the village.
Extract from the documentary: “People of the World - People of Zanskar”
    Direction: Jean-François Bordier
    Production : MC4, TV Rennes 35 & TV5 Monde

If you have the time, "Becoming woman in Zanskar" shows the same things but more in depth. Worth the watch.

They have such a hard life but also seem to be fairly happy. So many in the world have no idea of how other people live. As I, myself and millions and millions of others sit in our comfortable homes in America with automatic heat and air conditioning for the heat and humidity of the Summers. I live in the state of Tennessee and I'm very lucky that I have early in my life traveled to some remote areas of the Himalayas. I have always loved and admired those people in some of those remote regions thank you so much for a well-done and Beautiful video.

I now realized that everything in the world is in balance whatever we have we should not complain because some other part of the world is struggling to survive.. I'm now living in Oman with my family where summer spike up to 50 degrees, we fail like dying outside. We are the complete opposite of this country.. Beautiful story..

There are ways to construct a greenhouse so vegetables can grow in such harsh soil and weather. Of course it would requite solar and an expert in such construction. I have seen it done in documentaries. If any out there watching knows of someone to do it and bankroll it, I would love to see their generous offer to help the villages. One large community greenhouse would be such a blessing to these people. They need more than barley to eat.

@@natasha687able they like to live in a rural area or may be they have no alternative because urban areas mean for many, coming von rural areas mean living in slums, especially in India. But that is not the question. The question was living in isolation. And that's not the case at all. They want a bit of amenities which urban life provides, and that is infrastructure like roads or electricity. I have been to Zanskar 35 years ago and I know what I'm talking about.

@@norbiberman7363 Not talking about India. Talking about them wanting to live in the isolated area here. It doesn’t matter if you live there now or ever. I have commented specific to this video. People choose to live isolated in every country. I say let them.

@@natasha687able I'm sure you know, Zanskar is part of India. You walk approx 5 days from Zanskar and you are in India. And I'm not sure if you watched the whole video. Why do you think the locals built the roads connecting small villages, hamlet's and monasteries by themselves? To be isolated?
