SuperWinterborn I don't deal in absolutes but I have to break that rule for Mr. John Daly. He was easily the most gifted interviewer/emcee/reporter that I've ever seen back to the early '60s. A man who was eminently well educated, always at ease and who knew how not to be manipulated by others. He would have been wasted on 60 Minutes in its' objective prime years. He didn't get that from tiny little Tilton school. Also, when on camera he never felt the need to belittle others. Extremely well educated and honed by experience in the field he always kept on learning. He was and remains the model for all speakers and reporters. Just a gifted natural without the need to show it off. Instead today we have screaming, poorly educated "news readers" who feel the need to interject their personal agenda. What a pleasure he was to watch at work.

Hank Ballard had a solo career and was also the front man for a group called at various times The Royals, The Midnighters or Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. He was primarily an R&B artist, but also performed many songs that crossed over into rock and roll and some that would be classified as funk. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990; the rest of the Midnighters were inducted in 2012. Most people are familiar with The Supremes. Not as many are familiar with Hank Ballard and the Midnighters. Martin Gabel was always so gracious-always said goodnight to Dorothy as he does here- when Bennett Cerf is there next to Dorothy, she says goodnight Bennett but he doesn't reply back to her- it's always, goodnight John- ignoring her!
Love viewing these shows, in this case one that was telecast 62 years ago. John Daly is a perfect moderator, and the panel always delights. I only knew Richard Boone from his Western TV fame, he was an articulate person as is Martin Gabel. Arlene was always a fav of mine and Dorothy always seems to uncover the mystery before anyone. Johnny Mathis was only 24 and that wonderful personality shines through.
Dorothy was a crime reporter I believe, so her sleuthing skills I think helped her. She died tragically only about 6 years later, which some believed to be mysterious.
A couple of interesting things about her. She became the first woman to get the Airline Transport Pilot License, in1960. An even more exciting thing, she and her twin sister were selected for the Mercury 13 program. These were 13 women that were selected for the same astronaut testing as the male Mercury astronauts. regrettably the program was canceled before they had a chance to go into space. Probably after her appearance here, in the late 1950's worked as a federal pilot examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration, performing pilot evaluations and issuing certificates. She was quite the lady and pilot
At 5'7", Mathis earned an athletic scholarship to the University of San Francisco where he vied with Bill Russell in the high jump. He was also an excellent basketball player and hurdler. He turned down an invitation to the US trials for the 1956 Olympics as one of America's premier high jumpers to pursue his singing career. Russell, of course, helped lead the USA to the gold medal in basketball in the 1956 Melbourne games.
During an interview back in the 1970's, he gave a sardonic response when asked about his "ideal" woman: "A deaf mute nymphomaniac who owns a liquor store."

I felt a bit uncomfortable for Mr. Roger with the repeated references to his "splendid girth". 62 years later and folks are STILL getting fat-shamed. I'm thin myself, and it still bugs me.... 🙄

Incredible charisma....audiences loved him...at this time he was playing abraham lincoln on broadway in a play called The Rivalry..actor richard boone...he took time out to be a panelist on this show..after a couple of months on broadway, boone had to get back to Hollywood to film a new season of have gun will travel..on which he portrayed paladin.
Johnny Mathis was only 23 when he appeared on WML. Such an amazing singer with a voice unlike any other possibly Nat King Cole. Chances are will always be one of my favorite songs. Mathis bought Howard Hughes mansion in the Hollywood Hills in 1946 and still lives there - wow!

I expected to hear wolf whistles when Miss Dietrich came onstage because she was beautiful, young and (we found out later) had a very sexy voice. In other episodes the audience go wild with noise but maybe there were more women than men this time - Johnny Mathis got a noisy welcome but Miss D did not. We rarely see the audience, so we can only judge by ear.

Katarzyna Kopeć I've been watching these in order recently and I've noticed that for some time they have been alternating Arlene and Dorothy in spots 1&3. Since Martin is in Bennett's spot while he's away, the fortnightly separation of Arlene and her hubby makes sense.
Funny how people looked so much older 60 some years ago, compared to today when we are smooth and lovely even into our 90's. I would have guessed that Mr. Rogers was at least 40.
I'm what you might call "going on 90," and believe me, I am NOT smooth and lovely. However, I would have guessed Mr. Roger to be about 40 also, and that's from a perspective of regarding my physician as looking as if he just got out of high school.
I love Richard Boone's backhanded comment on Dorothy's Snobbishness, and yes she was, she once wrote a very insulting piece in her column about some Country-Western acts at Carnegie Hall,, asking why they were bringing Hicks to N.Y. City.

So telling people they should skip to the mystery guest segment is less than ideal in that it deprives them of any real chance to find out if they like the show itself. Of course, if the show isn't for you, so be it. But it did grate on me a bit to see not just a timecode to skip to the mystery guest segment (people leave comments like that all the time), but your suggestion that it would be a waste of time NOT to skip the rest of the show. No hard feelings in any event. Thanks.

ToddSF 94109 Incorrect. A wedding planner is NOT the same as a bridal consultant. While some bridal consultants work as wedding planners also, they are not the same thing at all. A bridal consultant deals in sales/services related to bridal wear/attire. A wedding planner is...well, just that. Please don’t speak authoritatively on something you just think you know.

I expected to hear wolf whistles when Miss Dietrich came onstage because she was beautiful, young and (we found out later) had a very sexy voice. In other episodes the audience go wild with noise but maybe there were more women than men this time - Johnny Mathis got a noisy welcome but Miss D did not. We rarely see the audience, so we can only judge by ear.
She was a fine looking lady with a great personality

Katarzyna Kopeć I've been watching these in order recently and I've noticed that for some time they have been alternating Arlene and Dorothy in spots 1&3. Since Martin is in Bennett's spot while he's away, the fortnightly separation of Arlene and her hubby makes sense.

Funny how people looked so much older 60 some years ago, compared to today when we are smooth and lovely even into our 90's.

I'm what you might call "going on 90," and believe me, I am NOT smooth and lovely. However, I would have guessed Mr. Roger to be about 40 also, and that's from a perspective of regarding my physician as looking as if he just got out of high school.
People actually had jobs , and didn't sit home watching videos all day back k then. Smfh.
There was a lot more smoking and drinking of cocktails back then, which tends to age people.

I love Richard Boone's backhanded comment on Dorothy's Snobbishness, and yes she was, she once wrote a very insulting piece in her column about some Country-Western acts at Carnegie Hall,, asking why they were bringing Hicks to N.Y. City.
Dorothy should have passed to let her fellow panelists try to guess Mathis' identity! Give them a chance.....then when it came back to her turn, she would have nailed it!

@@GrrMeister This is exactly how most people who have never heard of or watched the show before become new fans-- they're drawn in to watching an episode by the appearance of a particular mystery guest, and find themselves enjoying the program itself. So telling people they should skip to the mystery guest segment is less than ideal in that it deprives them of any real chance to find out if they like the show itself. Of course, if the show isn't for you, so be it. But it did grate on me a bit to see not just a timecode to skip to the mystery guest segment (people leave comments like that all the time), but your suggestion that it would be a waste of time NOT to skip the rest of the show. No hard feelings in any event. Thanks.

I have one more full episode of the BBC series which I haven't posted yet, which as it turns out, was the final episode with Gilbert Harding. It was actually prerecorded on film, not a live show, and since Harding died before the intended air date, the BBC never aired it until 20 years later.
