Well the concept of mega evolution causing pain does technically dates back to at least the XY anime. I think the real problem is that mega evolution will always just work. It would be using the disobedience system and you need high friendship and or affection to be able to use it properly and stay in control to show how only trainers with a strong bound to there Pokemon can properly use it.

I think "Light that Burns the Sky" sounds cooler than "Heaven-Scorching Light of Destruction" because it's got a poetic simplicity to it instead of sounding like something from a shounen anime, but I get how your mileage may vary.

My favorite of the bunch was Mimikyu’s “Let’s Snuggle Forever”. Considering the Pokédex entry mentions whoever sees what’s underneath the costume dies of shock, it’s surprisingly macabre.

Honestly, it'd be cool if the gimmicks were region exclusive because that's how the regions evolved to use that particular extra power. Showing off different forms of bonds between trainers and pokemons in different regions and having some stuff be utilized by the friendship meter. If only TPC would allow the lore for each region to be expanded upon in game instead of each basically being a one and done
I still refuse to believe the whole "Mega Evolution is actually really painful and horrible" is anything but Gamefreak justifying the decision to drop it as a mechanic.
What also makes the so good (and megas) is that lore wise its not hard to bring megas tera and zmoves back and wont break much since they all require items and 1 key item. dynamax need a key item and a specific location so gamefreak shot themselves in the foot
Looking back at it, Megas was definitely the best new feature, great designs over all and it gave old Pokemon new life. But Megas are such a beloved feature, they should just include 20-30 new ones in everygame without focussing the story on them.
I think this might be a hot take, but I'm okay with having only one gimmick per generation that disappears in the next one, because if all the gimmicks carried over to subsequent gens, I think Pokémon would suffer something similar to what happened to Yu-Gi-Oh up until Sevens (if you know what I mean).
And I'm on the opposite end. I think making and discarding gimmicks just ensures people won't engage with them as much. Mega Evolution was such a game-changer, breathing life into less considered pokemon and making fan favorites even cooler... the fact you could only do it to one per match and it took the held item slot was such a big deal, too. You're giving up 20% more damage, or perhaps more with a Choice Band, or other fascinating and varied effects like from Assault Vest and Insurance Policy... for the chance to have your mon get big and scary. Then, they made it obsolete with Gigantimax, which does the same but also changes their move pool, and runs out in a few turns. It's just Mega but less interesting IMO, and then they did it AGAIN with Terastalizing. Z-moves were similar to Megas in that they needed a held item, but the methodology was different since it's one powerful attack instead of a buff (and possible type change). I'm 37 and grew up with Red and Blue, but also, I'm no Genwunner. I embrace new ideas and generations. The problem I have is that nothing was as cool or as interesting as Megas... it's all just a bastardized form of Mega-Evolution anymore. When I played Shield, I didn't use Gigantimax at all, because I never felt I needed it. When I played Violet, it was the same. I only used Terastalization once, and it lagged the game so bad I never wanted to again anyway. It just... doesn't feel as cool or useful as Megas to me.
yeah having a ton of mechanics to consider, which in official VGC tournaments if all 4 current gimmicks existed at once would cause pure chaos (which is why i find having both Mega's and Z-Moves existing at the same time in gen 7 was a mistake) so I'd say sticking to ONLY 1 gimmick each gen is much better for balance, and hopefully ones that are more balanced that any mon could use (as seen with Tera) and not ones that your whole team would need to be built around (as seen with Megas)

The other interesting thing about Z-crystals is them being able to change a pokemon’s form, which is only the case for Necrozma to transform into Ultra Necrozma. It’s too bad Ultra Necrozma hasn’t come back yet due to the lack of implimentation of Ultranecrozium Z or any substitute. Fun Fact: contest spectaculars in ORAS gives a special move for each type to use after the star metre is full, and the moves are used are very similar to Z-moves, so those may have been a way for gamefreak to test how they look

You can find a whole bunch of fan made mega evolutions, regional forms, gigantamax forms and even exclusive terastal form, but I never found a fan made exclusive z-move :(
I feel like a lot of these gimmicks have bad distributions. Megas were pretty good but still lacking with Audino being the only gen 5 rep, and then just none at all in Kalos, though I feel like that one was intentional. As he mentioned, exclusive Z moves only hit Kanto and Alola, though it was a little better because every mon could still use a base Z move. While Dynamax could be used by anyone, literally only one pokemon that wasn't from Kanto or Galar gets a Gigantamax form. Bonus points for whoever knows which one without looking it up. And then Paldea just threw its hands up and let everybody use Tera Types. I don't personally mind exclusivity for gimmicks like this, but I do think the distribution should be more balanced across generations.
The distribution of z-moves is funny, but allow me to introduce the distribution of Gigantamax forms: -20 Galarian Pokemon -12 Kantonian Pokemon -Garbodor
There are two z moves I need to come back. First is exteme eevoboost which lets eevee be a super baton pass pokemon Then there is pulverizing pancake the most perfect move for snorlax
Adding Kahili to the Flyium-Z scene makes it even stranger. If you got the crystal before the E4, there's just a random golfer doing a dance and leaving without explanation. Even if you know who she is, why is she there? Does she just hide in the cave waiting for someone to find the crystal?
This is confirmed, Vegeta would never use Z moves just because of the poses. Goku instead would beg him "come on use it just once, it'll be fun." "No, I have to do things like the Saiyan race wants, we have to get stronger through battle so megas, all the way Kakarot!"

You can find a whole bunch of fan made mega evolutions, regional forms, gigantamax forms and even exclusive terastal form, but I never found a fan made exclusive z-move :(
Man ill never understand why they didn't keep and continue to make these. Far better than mega evolutions.
I love and miss Z-Moves.
Calling Raichu Pikachu here is about the same as Calling Plusle or minun Pichu.
Just let the man have his spotlight already.
I don't personally mind exclusivity for gimmicks like this, but I do think the distribution should be more balanced across generations.
hot take. legends magearna would go so hard. or maybe a legends game that takes place in one of the ultra wormhole dimensions
The distribution of z-moves is funny, but allow me to introduce the distribution of Gigantamax forms:
-20 Galarian Pokemon
-12 Kantonian Pokemon
-Garbodor
From a competitive POV, I would probably loathe the return of Z-Moves a lot, LOT less if they existed in an open team sheet format.
The trainer busting a sick move
I would LOVE Pokémon legends necrozma
Unless they add them in legends Z-A which I’m kind of hoping for. That’ll hopefully give the Z in Z-A meaning.
Z Moves were always my favorite battle gimmick and it sucks that game freak lowkey forgot about them
You can find the ice z crystal before the Pokémon league
There are two z moves I need to come back. First is exteme eevoboost which lets eevee be a super baton pass pokemon
Then there is pulverizing pancake the most perfect move for snorlax
Adding Kahili to the Flyium-Z scene makes it even stranger. If you got the crystal before the E4, there's just a random golfer doing a dance and leaving without explanation. Even if you know who she is, why is she there? Does she just hide in the cave waiting for someone to find the crystal?
This is confirmed, Vegeta would never use Z moves just because of the poses.
Goku instead would beg him "come on use it just once, it'll be fun."
"No, I have to do things like the Saiyan race wants, we have to get stronger through battle so megas, all the way Kakarot!"
Gen VII Gyaradoses probably kept Splash a lot
Question, HOW DO YOU GET MEWIUM Z?
The only thing pokemon fans can agree on is that *Light that Burns the Sky* is the most awesome name ever
The Japanese name of the move is *HEAVEN SCORCHING LIGHT OF DESTRUCTION*
Whats with Glazius Z? I find that only with A Video in the Post game
Z-moves to me are a good idea with subpar implementation and great bias.
