- "Garden Song" is a popular children's song and American folk song written by David Mallett in 1975.
The song has become a part of American folklore since being recorded by the Muppets in 1995.
The song has been also recorded by Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary, John Denver, Pete Seeger, Fred Penner, David LaMotte, and Arlo Guthrie.
This version of "Garden Song" covered by John Denver made the national charts.
The song also inspired a book called 'Inch by Inch' by Leo Lionni in 1995.

Rest In Peace John Denver, I hope you’re in heaven, and you’ve missed so much since you’ve been gone. New buildings, new businesses, new everything!!! I really do hope you’re in heaven and at peace John. I will always remember your angelic voice and you’re kind gentle spirit with your heartwarming music. I love you so much.
Still and forever missed, going to his concerts was like sitting in his living room with everyone around you singing along.
I grew up listening to John Denver and this genre of music as well as others but I remember singing this in school when I was little! Honestly the music back then were so pure!
Jon Devers. Voice is light and joyful
I love ❤️ to listening 🎶 to him. He lifts my spirit with his light voice.
My mom used to sing this to me when I was really little to help me to sleep... I only remember that cuz it would make me cry cuz she had the voice of an angle.. then on m 5th birthday she gave me a muppets VHS that had this song.. and I even sang it my daughter before I lost rights over a battle 🥰 love you momma.. she stopped singing because her father (my grandpappy) passed 7 years ago... 😓 She still goes to church but I havent heard her voice in so long (singing voice) she's still alive but she doesn't sing anymore 😭
Oh that once again you may hear her sweet voice sing joyfully.
Oh that is so sad, have you thought of singing to your sweet Ma, blessings Nick, I hope your Ma sings again, music is so good for the soul ❤️

When I was a kid in the early 80s, there was a gardening radio show that began with this version of the song 😁
It's 2023, and there is still one gardening show that uses it!
Oh my, I am a John Denver fan - and I cannot believer I never knew about this garden song! At least my inner child is gleeful of this sweet song.
What an amazing voice
Simple and perfect
That tin whistle is gorgeous.
Beautiful
I actually sing or hum this song when I garden. Heard it first from John Denver.
This is almost done as a lullaby

Lyics:
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down
Pullin' weeds and pickin' stones
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
'Cause the time is close at hand
Rainful rain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land
Plant your rows straight and long
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care
Old crow watchin' hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
An inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down
this version is amazing, miss JD a lot.
[garden song]
Inch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
All it takes is a rake and a hoe
And a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless these seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below
Till the rain comes tumbling down
Pulling weeds and picking stones
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own
Cause the time is close at hand
Painful rain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music from the land
Plant your rows straight and long
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother Earth will make you strong
If you give her love and care
Old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there
My Favorite Music Is Country Music
Love this song. Mallett is genius. Wish they'd mixed the vocal up louder in this version.

❤️
my friend joe died and at the furnel this song was played
I'm sorry for your loss.
Rumors say there's a Scarecrow in the Garden that looks like Lucifer now. Chris Stapleton sung John Denver never got to it.
That was a sweet number. You know what else? I HATE sweet numbers!
Muppets! :)
BUH! Huh huh huh!
I think this song is not just a children's song. And I would say it is now a folk song in the American song book. This is a lovely version, but I like Dave Mallett doing his own song.
first time i heard this song from The Life And Times Of Grizzly Adams
Rahadian Rizal But John Denver made it.
Do you know the movie?
Rusty and Rosy Sing Around The World brought me here!

I'm not sure all of us understand this song presented by Arlo Guthrie the way he meant it to be understood. He was arguing against sameness all over the world. We each have our own particular culture. We should not change it to be uniform. You can't solve problems kilometer by kilometer. We have to solve our problems the way we started them: inch by inch. That young 20-year-old (in Arlo's version) failed to understand our history. The uniqueness of each culture.
Respectfully, Sir/Ma'am,
I think that there are those in this world who make a point of not only discerning our differences, but also make them a point of contention; a need for comparison, competition, and there are others who absolutely embrace our differences on the surface, and allow everyone to be equal, as long as they have the bare minimum to afford everyone else the same.
We're already more the same than what we're being told, we have more in common already than the petty differences that have been impressed upon us, and if our differences become a reason to compete, or be jealous, or an excuse to not try, then what are we, really?
I believe that humans, with all of their faults and flaws, can still be able to accept and be understanding of each other, without sacrificing their own identity.
