Watched this with my daughter, (who is 20), and we are both in agreement that the fabric you chose appears authentic in color to the period. You did a good job, and we both feel that you could've easily walked on to any B&W set in the 40's and no one would have known you were from the future.
I would love to see you sell this pattern to McCalls. Or even better, start your own pattern company and sell designs like this. It is a winner in my book and very, very flattering. Another design well done!!
Nomad for life she can’t sell this design as it cams from an old published pattern in the first place. Most of her work is from vintage patterns that old dressmakers like me sell when they clean out their collection of patterns. I made that same dress in the 1960’s for my mother and recognized it right away. She’s not bad for an intermediate in sewing but needs to pay closer attention to the finish work of the designs.

I think that many people misunderstand what she is doing because of the constant talking without really telling where the pattern came from they think because she is sizing the pieces that she is making the pattern. Its all a little misleading.
Just a wee hint of fabric trivia for you: the word 'Tartan' is almost exclusively used for patterns that are tied to a family or 'clan' whereas plaid is usually for a tartan looking fabric that is not tied to a family 😇 many Scots will not wear a tartan that is not their family's! Although, having a specific tartan is an invented tradition, as before the 19th century, the pattern varied from region to region depending on which natural dyes were available to weavers.
There also tartans specific to cities, universities, schools etc. The Tartan Registry is a registry of all official tartans: www.tartanregister.gov.uk/index
“I don’t know how this ended up like this, because it was completely symmetrical before I sewed it” Possible solution: 1) stay stitching is important on curves because they’re effectively cut on the bias. 2) sew from the centre out, wide to narrow, and then repeat exactly on the other side of your centre line - if the fabric warps, you’ve done your best to ensure both sides warp the same way. This is mostly for anyone who hears this and thinks “same”, as obviously this suggestion is a wee bit after the fact for Angela, and I’m betting, given the amount of practice and reading done since this video, this is far from news.
The best thing about vintage is that it has become timeless. It's worth spending the time to sew it right, because you will get years of wear out of them (not like today's fast fashion items).

I wanted to share a brief inspiration I was cleaning up my sewing room and came across the scrap from a cut-out dart from my pattern and boom I remembered your vlog for this one and off to the races I have gone! I think your 40's style dress came out beautifully😉 I love the gathered center bodice. I'm a newbie, I'm just learning how to draft a basic bodice. And seeing this dress blows my mind, that maybe I could accomplish it one day. I adore old fashioned clothing from peasant clothing, OUTLANDER CLOTHES OMG !!!, gorgeous medieval gowns, downtown Abbey styles, to 60's . Great job!!
Being unhappy with the fabric does fit the 1940s ethos. Most of the world was at war, Europe was a MESS! Here in the U.K. we had rationing that lasted well into the1950s. Women were encouraged to “make do and mend” so women were given sewing lessons, shown how to cut down older adult clothes into kids clothing, how to make dresses from drapes, bed linens etc. So having a pretty dress that is well fitted, but not your idea fabric, was something I’m sure MANY young women had mixed emotions about. I know that my great grandmother took her own rather large and grand wedding dress, repurposing the fabric to create shirts for my great grandfather, my grandmother’s much smaller and less grand wedding dressing dress (which was then dyed so it could become a “Sunday best” dress) AND it also became the Christening gown that I was the last to wear (it was stolen actually off my body as I slept while the family & friends had tea, my grandmother was sure it was a particular neighbour, but had no proof)

Gahhh, youre killing it again! I know ive said this before and youve replied, but im going to say it again, The 1930s-1950s vintage style REALLY suits you. I wouldnt be surprised if you started dressing vintage (or vintage inspired) in "real" life. You have the confidence and grace to pull it off. 1940s is my favorite time period as well and ive started dressing vintage and have never felt more "me"
I really enjoy your videos Angela. This is indeed a tricky colour to pull off, for anyone, but you look great in the whole ensemble. I sew from my own patterns too and it can be a frustrating journey sometimes, especially for the upper body, but I'm just making contemporary, everyday clothes and not tackling anything nearly as brave as your period pieces, so well done for your perserverence and for the final dress.

What a wonderful outfit when it's all put together. I love that your lipstick matched the velvet ribbon on your hat. I also like this format of showing the process but also the way it is worn in one video. I think it really ties together the purpose of a certain garment with its design and execution.

Elegant, the dress, hat, and you! Love the fabric. Do it again in a different fabric, if you must, but that dress is just waiting to go out to dinner at a fancy restaurant.
Angela use Jacquard's dye-na-flow to dye your dress. It's paint for fabric, that's absorbed by the fabric instead of traditional paint which sits on top fabric when painted on. It's transparent but you can dilute it with water too. And the color is heat set by ironing it, so no hot water like traditional dye. There's like 30 colors too
The double tabs on the top of the zipper are really awesome. I love how they look over the lace. Overall I think the dress looks amazing and I don't see what you see with the color issues- maybe it is the beautiful red lipstick that adds so much life to the look and pulls the trim from the hat. In any event I hope you wear it because the overall look is quite pretty.

Thank you for another great video! I always feel inspired and more daring after watching them. About the dress color- Consider pairing this dress with a necklace or scarf in a bright color to flatter your face. It's always a good idea to drape fabric next to your face and see how you look in a mirror with natural light to make sure a fabric suits you, especially if it's a color you haven't worn before. I would peg your coloring as cool toned, probably a summer or a winter. You can wear a lot of different colors, especially if they are bright or cool, but this neutral yellowish beige would look best on someone with a warm undertone, aka someone who with a spring or autumn coloring. Fortunately it's neutrality means that it won't compete with colorful accessories.
love the hat its beautiful. l'm 58 yrs old and l remember my mother wearing similar clothes and she wore those shoes forever you look brilliant and so did my mum. l wish l still had the figure to wear such clothes but alas time has a way of chageing your body shape tfs
You look just like my Mum in photos of her in the 1940's when she was a teenager. My grandmother was a seamstress so Mum always had beautiful clothes but Mum herself hated sewing. It always seems to skip a generation. :) Some styling trivia for you about the clothing of the 1940's especially during the war. Most of the textile factories were turned over to the war effort so very little new civilian fabric was produced, and it was usually a solid darker colour as a patterned fabric took longer to make and darker fabrics wore better. Hence the only way to add design and femininity to dresses was to make interesting pleats, tucks, panels, gathering etc. to try to make your "bottle green" dress look different from all the other bottle green dresses around town. :)
I’m pretty sure those arrow bits are called Tabs. I like that fix, it was a clever idea! The fabric probably isn’t a perfect colour for your fair skin, but its not anywhere near as bad as you imagine either. Beautiful job With it. Love the hat too 💕
The color looks dignified and respectable. It makes you look delicate and serious. The shoe in mom's closet that she woud have worn would have been the "blond spectator pumps" . They looked just like your black and white shoes, but were the same color as your dress. White Gloves? I like this one on you very much.

Agreed, that those little things are called tabs or tab closures. As to the color problem, I think that if you make a decent sized, meaning not to delicate, in the same color as the ribbon on the hat, it will totally perk up your face and bring out your natural undetones. or add a silk scarf in that color. The color looks dignified and respectable. It makes you look delicate and serious. The shoe in mom's closet that she woud have worn would have been the "blond spectator pumps" . They looked just like your black and white shoes, but were the same color as your dress. White Gloves? I like this one on you very much.

Agreed, that those little things are called tabs or tab closures. As to the color problem, I think that if you make a decent sized, meaning not to delicate, in the same color as the ribbon on the hat, it will totally perk up your face and bring out your natural undetones. or add a silk scarf in that color. It is a gorgeous dress! great job! Thanks for sharing. Would you mind to do a tutorial or something along that line on making belts? I would love to learn how to make a belt like you have done there! :)
