    I've read a few recent articles about shark attacks that happened in Australia, the Bahamas and Mexico where the victims were in fact killed by a shark. I find it fascinating that at the end of every one of these articles it states either that sharks are not dangerous to humans or that the likelihood of being attacked is extremely low, say lower than being hit by lightning or whatever stat they use.
    We have no idea how many people are killed by sharks every year if you consider 3rd world countries and such were these things are not reported.

    The same day that this happened, and having recently moved to Maine from Oregon, I was chatting with a friend about sharks being in the waters of Midcoast Maine, and was told no, there are no sharks in these waters. I doubted that, and also spoke with a kayaker that same day who said they never consider sharks, Well that was the day that poor woman was killed by a GW. I think my friend and the lady kayaker I met now have a different view of what's in the water out there.

    • @teresadvorak6145
      @teresadvorak6145 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Yeah, that reminds me of the time my boyfriend & I went camping in Oregon years ago & when we first got there, I asked if there were snakes. He said no there's not any snakes here,don't be silly. So we walked on down to the river only to see a huge Diamond Back Rattler sunning itself on a big boulder 😮😂 !

      @kathykirkham1956 I can tell you with certainty that there are GW sharks off the Oregon coast. My former co-worker was salmon fishing in Winchester bay. He was watching a seal swimming about 100 ft. from his boat when suddenly a Great White that he estimated to be around 15 ft. long breached with the seal in its mouth. It frightened him so badly that he upped his anchor and got off the water.

      I live right by where this happened, even closer if by water, and there are pretty much no details to be had from any reputable sources. There was plenty of hearsay ofc but I couldn’t find anything that went into detail and I could’ve literally been attacked by the same shark if I made the quick trip to Popham beach… it seems very odd there’s little to no detail but hey, we’re a tourist state… can’t have you fair-weather visitors thinking you’ll be eviscerated by a great white so let’s just not go into detail since nobody cares if the local bums become shark shit

      I hunt the Alagash every fall, the black bears up there are heavily hunted, so they know to avoid people for the most part, moose on the other hand will mess you up if you're not careful. Since I never walk into the woods up there without a rifle and a radio I tell myself I'm at the top of the food chain, but I acknowledge that there is a food chain, and I'm on it. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but bears, moose and sharks'll kill ya.

    My dog swims at the lobster boat dock just past where she was hit. Julie was projectile pushed out of the water, please also note she was swimming next to the boat lane. Said another way, the fish/lobster boats enter and exit right there. Bailey’s has a skinny harbor. Popham beach (summertime has many Sharktivity app pings) is a stones throw away. Boothbay and Newagon Harbor are a stones throw from Popham (also have Sharktivity pings as they swim toward Lubec). All the tuna fisherman in the Midcoast have great white sightings in the summer. I moved up here from Cape Cod, my hubby born and raised on the docks of Chatham, Cape Cod. Climate change and seal numbers rising, plus Chatham’s researchers tagging them= raised awareness/more sightings. My best guess is that shark followed a boat in and was loving the deep, dark harbor.

    Just wondered about those warning systems, how used are they if they only detect tagged sharks? What percentage of sharks are tagged versus not tagged? It would definitely be better than nothing but certainly not 100% safe I would think.

    • @zackzittel7683
      @zackzittel7683 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The cooperative shark tagging program tagged 229,000 sharks over a 52 year period….. and it’s estimated that we pull 100 million sharks from the ocean each year. I’d make a shot in the dark, ballpark guess that less than 1% of sharks that are currently alive have been tagged. So I can’t see it being effective……. I wonder if sonar like the kind used in fish finders coupled with software to identify sharks could be an option, it’s super easy to identify a shark using side scan sonar (not many fish 6’-20’ come into the shallows other than sharks)

    Problem with the acoustic tracking tech is A) it only works on sharks that have been tagged and B) the tags themselves have a finite lifespan based on battery life (typically seems to be a few years or so).
    What percentage of the total White Shark population could we conceivably keep tagged with active units? Seems like a good tool for collecting research data, but minimal impact on safety. Too many sharks, too few tags.

    Another great single attack show Hal. 🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
    I agree that they need shark attack prevention methods like those receivers because both humans and (especially) sharks, can come out alive. There is one flaw that I see in your theory about white sharks. If they resorted to humans as food because they can't catch seals, then how come the number of people consumed by sharks doesn't go up? If seals get away that often, and the sharks turned to humans for food because of that, how come people aren't consumed by white sharks more often? If a shark consumes a person, There's usually a cause behind it. Like out of desperation for food. Are you saying you think the shark that did this was desperate for food?

      I think when people are consumed by sharks unless someone sees it happen or records it then it’s likely to be chalked up as missing/presumed drowned because there’s no evidence of what happened. Like Cameron Robbins was eaten on video by several sharks and people argued that he drowned. Or Simon nellis I don’t think if the shark that consumed wasn’t recorded/witnessed by multiple people it would have been labeled a “drowning”

    A question for people from America or Australia etc.
    When you hear these stories from Hal and watch these videos.
    Do you just jump into the sea normally or are you careful?
    And if so, aren't there any thoughts going through your head?
    I'm from Russia, we don't have such topics.

      I think for many years the media downplayed the danger of sharks. We were always told sharks don't eat people or sharks won't bother you. I am more careful now, and I've told my children to be careful and avoid ocean waters deeper than your waist. I took more chances when I was younger because I was told it was safe to do so.

    Yeah, I would also need a mobile cage if I were ever tempted/talked into fishing on the bottom. Sounds like it's good money but it seems to me (w/o looking too deeply into pricing) as though the cage would take a while to pay off but would eventually pay for itself. I would STILL get a case of the browns if I were down at the bottom in the cage and a GWS either bumped it or bit on it. Not ashamed to say I would sh*t myself.

    I agree with you completely, Hal, regarding all the mistaken identity theories. I believe that the animal knew that Ms. Holowach wasn't a seal. However, I can't see where it was attempting to predate? It appears that poor Ms. Holowach succumbed within moments of the attack, but the shark did not return to retrieve the remains. Also, the rescuers, that only traveled 60 ft., did not see the animal circling their kayaks, or near them? I think that this was just one very angry shark that brutally attacked her and just took off.

    The Great White is highly interested in a mammalian heartbeat and any heart signature similar to a seal or sea lion will be of interest. Human beings are relatively weak swimmers compared with other aquatic mammals and therefore probably generate a lot of interest from the great White population when within hearing/pressure range. They probably zero in on just such heart signatures(including ours)from up to a kilometre away. I am sure that when confronted by an unusual heart signal and body presence(pretty lean and small) they will weigh up the odds before attacking, no matter how inept and vulnerable we may initially seem. A mouthful of bones is probably not their first choice, but when you haven't bagged a juicy seal for a couple of days, then a bite sized snack might be worth it, especially when the nearest seal or sea lion traffic is offline for the moment.

    • @zackzittel7683
      @zackzittel7683 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think we are as capable of swimming as a seal is at flopping around on land…… and I think you’re right about sharks catching people when they’re really hungry like the shark that ran into Heather Boswell in the middle of the open ocean, I think he was migrating and hungry and bit the first guy before biting heather and then puppy guarding her from getting to the boat and bit her again….. that shark was trying to get a meal…..it bit 2 people 3 times and ate her leg. Same with Simon nellis, that shark bit him in half and then ate the rest of him… had it not been recorded I think it would have been labeled a drowning because there was no evidence of his existence left.

    • @johnhaller7017
      @johnhaller7017 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jeepguyoffroadlife My guess is and it's only a guess, is that to a GW, thin or obese individuals look like pretty low pickings compared with a seal or sea lion. But worth investigation for sure. The first and foremost attraction for the GW would be the mammalian heart signal and the only real inhibition would probably be the 100 million+ years of genetic survivor caution, when faced with an outlier.
      Hence the common exploratory, but for the swimmer often fatal, test bite. The admixture taste of neoprene and/or fiberglass, must also cause some GW reassessment of the situation. This link to famous surfer Wayne lynch gives a pretty clear(and entertaining) demonstration of just how circumspect a GW is before going all out and just how avoiding being potentially, fatally beached by a surfbreak, would be a high priority to Great White navigation too. A definite No no! See below.

      @@jeepguyoffroadlife I almost guarantee there are no stats on a fatty-bo-batty being more likely to be attacked…. I think it’s a solid theory that landwhales could be more likely to be consumed instead of just getting one bite because they are soft like seals.

      Thanks John! I am fascinated by white pointers as my perception of them is their in a unique class. Meaning aside from their size , the fact they at times stock their human prey for prolonged time lines corrolates with higher intelligence. Even how they attack is unique in they evolve and adapt to shallows , deep waters and at times their attacks are so brutal they seem to be in their own class of shark beyond all others.

      Hoping to find some answers eventually if there are trends. Currently it is everything most experts say. Avoid jetties, docks, river mouths, post rain murky waters, if there are baitfish or any other active fish in the area including turtles. Staying in relatively shallow water. Those all help but i just stay out of the water myself.
