Trek/Bontrager WaveCel Helmets: "Cycling’s most important change in 30 years?"

  • Is incorporating WaveCel technology into helmets “Cycling's most important change in 30 years"? The initial marketing claims by Trek indicated it was going to be. For the rest of us, the hype didn't match the deliverables. Now MIPS has entered the discussion questioning the claims made by Trek/Bontrager. Interesting times! Nevertheless - improvements in cycling safety are always welcomed.

      I can attest to this. I smashed my head on concrete while wearing a helmet with this tech. Luckily I didn’t have a concussion but I had an injured neck, bruised rips, broken clavicle, and scrapped a lot of skin off. It’s been about two months since the accident (skin barely recovered, ribs are still bruised, and my clavicle is still healing) and I have had zero issues with head.
      The helmet does get hot but it saved my damn life.

    If you've had a concussion, then something like this is extremely tempting. I'm debating getting one myself. If it reduced my concussion recovery time from my collision 4 months ago by even a month, it would be worth it to me. Concussion recovery is the worst. There's a lot of hype here but it's at the least an attempt in a very good direction, and if there's even a little benefit over normal foam, it has a lot of value. Not just from the helmet design itself, but from promoting this kind of development in the industry.

    Shane, I like you, don't have any hair. About a month ago I crashed in a Wavecel. My head hit the asphalt hard enough to badly dent the helmet and crack it. No, it did not leave any marks on my head. It was prevented by the inter layer that is between my head and the Wavecel. The crash helmet is currently in the landfill. My experience makes me a believer. I've replaced it with an identical helmet.

    hello there, nice video. I LOVE my pink Bontrager wave cell. wish they were around in 1988 when i was riding and hit by a 66 Chevy resulting in 3 skull fractures and severe TBI. Fast forward to 2022 when I met 4 neurosurgeons who wear these helmet i Detroit's SLOW Roll. I had my left fild vision removed and wore this baby everyday, slept with it and it provided total neck support PLUS feels better than a pillow. this thing saved me from having 4 major blows because I didnt see doors opening or closing and i wore it in every shower and it saved me from hittin my head in tight spaces. I tell everyone about this helmet. I was in the Beautmont system meeting head honchos for brain injury including a woman from Eastern Michigan University who was all ears. thank you #Bontrager!!!

    Thanks for the sneak peek Lama. Always enjoy your videos. I like how you went into your LBS to demo it, nice touch. I just picked one of these up from my local shop. I have been involved in high speed crashes in the pack in the past and while the traditional helmets saved me each time, it definitely left me with a massive headache. I currently have a close friend and teammate who crashed hard in a MIPS helmet recently and is suffering concussion symptoms. Its a long road to recovery for him. While no one can say for sure if the wavecell would have prevented his concussion, I am not taking any chances. It was time for me to upgrade my helmet anyway so I went for it. I should add that you and I have the same barber. (i.e. the folliclely challenged) I'm not too concerned with my noggin looking like a cheese grater. I am hopeful this stuff sheers and flexes in the event of a crash. Let's hope I don't have to test the theory...

    It is easy to criticise the marketing but don’t lose sight of the product. Bontrager are predicting this will change the way helmets are made. Time will tell. But my experience is concussion is incredibly easy to get. A simple fall on a wet road at modest speed. Wham. Memory loss. It could happen to anyone any day. A dog, a wet road, a bogan throwing a beer bottle. After my fall I bought a MIPS helmet. The research was far from conclusive but even a small improvement would be worthwhile. I applaud Trek for thinking, researching and testing.

      I was careful not to discredit the technology or progression in this area.

  • @Fidasaind
    @Fidasaind 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It looks like the study says that 2 of the people that are credited in the study are owners of WaveCell so you do have to wonder about a possible bias. Just like even if MIPS did large scale testing on WaveCell, you'd have to wonder if they had a bias. So I agree with MIPS in the article. Truly independent 3rd party testing is important. Especially when making claims like biggest thing in 30 years or 48 times lower risk of concussion. That's not to say that either company would fake or manipulate results and release data that puts cyclists at risk. Just that the possibility can exist. So supporting 3rd party research is important.
    Here's to hoping more independent agencies test it. Because if this tech is as good as WaveCell claims, that is great. But I'll take it with a grain of salt since it is not truly independent research. Just like if MIPS says it is not as good as WaveCell says, I'd take that with a grain of salt. But if a couple of independent agencies do testing and agree with WaveCell, that is something to look at.
    Mostly as a consumer and since my home LBS is a Trek dealer anyway and since my current helmet is still in good shape I'd assume I have 3 choices.
    1) Trek's claims are inflated. It may be better but may not be drastically better. Not sure it is worth the 50% higher price than say the Ballista MIPS
    2) Tech is better. But maybe not as much as their study suggests. Upgrade when my current helmet needs replaced. But wait til then.
    3) Tech is every bit as good as the study claims. Upgrade now.
    Having really thorough and turstworthy testing could help me figure out which of those 3 I fall in to. I will probably lean towards waiting til my helmet needs replaced and consider WaveCell then. Gives another company a chance to confirm WaveCell's results (or disprove them and then I'd change my mind). Also my wife is due for a replacement this fall anyway. Her helmet is about 2 years old and summers here in Phoenix are rough on helmets. We generally replace every 2-3 years even without a crash. She may go for a WaveCell and then at least tell me how she likes it (comfort airflow, the added weight, etc). I will say that I'm with Shane on the fit of Bontrager's helmets. Main reason I use a Ballista is it is the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. Gives me enough airflow for Phoenix summers. Correct shape and size for me. Like the retention system and pads they use. And I have used Trek's crash replacement warranty on helmets twice and it was an easy, no questions asked thing. So between that and my home shop being a Trek dealer, I'm probably going to buy something from them as long as that shop is in business (loyal to the shop that has been there for me for years, not the manufacturer)

    To be honest, I would be a bit surprised if the cycling industry would invent an entirely new frame material. I would say the industry is a bit on the small side to be able to fund that kind of research. I would say it's aerospace, automotive and computing that might do stuff like that. What I believe the cycling industry can do is to figure out a way to use some fairly recently invented material in a way that makes sense for bikes. Which was basically how it was with carbon frames, there were full carbon formula one cars about a decade before your LBS had a carbon bike for sale.

    My inclination is to give the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab's tests a fair amount of credence. They've been testing helmets of all manner for years and have no conflict of interest in any "helmet wars". Their testing shows that Trek's Specter is slightly better than the MIPS Ballista. If the metric is the VaTech Helmet Labs ratings, then the WaveCell equipped Specter isn't that much better. With that said,VaTech's test doesn't measure an infinity of possible collision energies and velocities, so that means that such tests can't absolutely determine the absolute safety of any helmet. Still, the test results aren't as great as Trek's marketing dept. might want us to believe.
    Trek's claim about a huge reduction in concessions? That's unadulterated BS. I don't know that anyone can test helmets and make such a claim.
    Lastly, MIPS ( I think that's who it was) idea that perhaps WaveCell is most effective at relatively high energies is interesting. What if the energies at which Trek saw "groundbreaking" results were higher than the norm for cycling crashes or more specifically for bicycling crashes that involved head impacts? Back in the 90's (and perhaps before) there was a similar thought and debate going on in the motorcycle community. It was argued--and data supported the argument--that Snell standards were producing higher loads and injury rates in road crashes than DOT certified helmets, while on the racetrack (super bike, drag racing, and the like) the results were the reverse. Perhaps this is that moment in cycling.

    Among the three Mips, Koroyd and Wavecel protection technologies, Mips has limited protection when it comes to larger impacts and Wavecel similar protection to Koroyd, but with an advantage in ventilation as it is not unidirectional flow. Another point that must also be considered in the safety of helmets is their protection area. MTB helmets need greater coverage, because the soil has obstacles such as stones and roots. The area of the temple, nape and ear should also be better protected.

    I had the XXX version of this helmet when it released and got rid of it like an idiot about a year later because I wanted something new. After a couple of years and several new helmets, I’m buying this thing again. Why? Well for a few good reasons.
    1. I have a big long head and I’ve never had a helmet fit my grape so well.
    2. I sweat a lot and every other helmet sucks at managing it. It always ends up on my sunglasses at the most inopportune time and is something that is extremely unsafe. This helmet has a “no sweat” pad that is the undisputed champ of diverting sweat from the forehead. I’ve never had sweat make it to my eyewear.
    3. Bees. I have terrible luck with them. The wavecel prevents them from flying in the helmet.
    4. It sits low on the head. I don’t know if it’s because my head is weirdly shaped but most helmets sit high on my head. This leaves the “knowledge knot” on the back of my dome kind of exposed which is the last thing I want during an accident.

    I had a 40km/hr crash and landed on the back of my head; the helmet looked like it had been hit by a sledge hammer. The wave cells were distorted almost half way across the helmet. I am certain I would be either dead or have a smashed skull or brain damage. As it is no blackout or concussion which I attribute to my wavecel helmet (Bontrager Spectre). Don't wait till you have a big crash get one ASAP.

    Given that the distance between your head and outer edge of helmet remains unchanged, unless they have broken the laws of physics, I cannot see a change of the magnitude that they claim. All they can do is set a compression constant for the material that maximises energy absorption for a given impact energy (which will be too much at lower impacts and too little at higher impact magnitudes. Their claims are B.S.

      cars have crumple zones which dissipate energy without increasing the length of the vehicle, same concept here

    • @acwna1
      @acwna1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JogBird Sorry if I wasn't clearer, but yes foam already works as a crumple zone, via energy absorption versus deflection (crush), it further does this by dissipating energy by way of fracture (less preferred.) Both materials act in a similar way, and given the very small distances available, then the magnitude claimed in the marketing is exaggerated. That was my point. And noting that MIPS have not been able to repeat the test results of this helmet, I am suspicious of the marketing.
      Appreciate your reply. :)

    I have done the research and at best cycling helmets offer little to moderate protection, tested to a falling speed of 21km/ph. No helmet is designed for a bicycle motor vehicle collision, Even if the TREK is better, than other helmets, concussion and protection will be marginal percentages more, as the design must de-accelerate the head and these are not motorbike helmets, just foam and holes.
    Helmets were brought in via Victoria (Australia) over political hype related to a girls death and helmet design company promoting helmets in the 90s.
    I wear a helmet, but I do believe people believe they do more than they are designed to, which is protect you from falling off your bike at medium speed.
    Remember, if the helmet cracks, it has reached it’s design limit and failed to fully protect your head. If you crash and the helmet is pushed in, but not broken, it has managed to de-accelerate your head to some degree.
    And Australia has has toughest Bicycle helmet STANDARDS in the world to pass, why we don’t get every helmet for sale in Australia, because they need to continual re-test batches (around 6000 AUD) and meet rotational tests as well, and some of the test require the same helmet for multiple tests.
    As for doing extra tests, the question is; what extra test do you do? As no Standard sets these out.
    The best test would be to get a crash test dummy put it on a bicycle, fit a helmet and collide it with a car, a car stationary, a car moving, head on, or across the bicycle, at 20, 30, 40 km/ph.
    No standard or company will do this, as everyone knows the helmets can’t withstand these forces.
    But these are the real world tests i would like to see done.

    • @MrBJPitt
      @MrBJPitt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Motorcycle helmets are also just foam and less holes. Full face does have a strong chin bar I guess.
      But yes, helmets won't help in big crashes, a slightly less sudden stop in a head, is still smushed brain or broken base.
      I had an unorthodox attempt at slowing down a crash using my face. Broke my jaw, and "every bone in the face" according to the doctors. I earned 5 titanium plates in my face and 10 days in hospital. My correctly fitted helmet? Just a few scratches and the tiniest dent. I didn't get a concussion either, maybe I should have been a boxer (no brain, no pain right 😂).
      I've crash tested helmets before, so I'm not saying helmets aren't useful. But you are right, they have massive limits.

    • @chinboy66
      @chinboy66 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cycling Moven The real world test you need done to understand the point of helmets is what you suggested above, versus the use of no helmet at all. I don’t believe anyone expects to get away unscathed from a crash with a vehicle at say, 40km an hour. The issue isn’t simply whether the helmet will prevent injury in this circumstance but the extent to which it mitigates it. There is a significant number of accidents that don’t involve other road users or high velocity impacts. A well designed, well fitting helmet is invaluable to the rider in such circumstances because it absorbs a degree of the impact that would otherwise have to be absorbed directly by the skull. It will also diffuse the impact helping to reduce the shunting of the brain inside the cranial vault which is the mechanism of all brain injury, permanent or otherwise.
      I don’t buy into the hype around “new technology” such as this or MIPS because most of it is marketing bullshit but a good quality helmet, doing the job it was designed for is an essential for all of us because it doesn’t take a high speed impact to fuck up your life completely.So whether it’s $50 or $500 this is a case where truly something is better than nothing....

    I own a new WaveCel Helmet, the Specter to be exact. On June 28th, while on a charity ride I overlapped wheels (assumedly in a moment of inattention) with the rider in front of me. Needless to say, I crashed... At 23MPH my left cheek and forehead area of the helmet hit the ground first, which is 185lbs of rider, gear, and bike (which was still attached to my feet) head-diving into a pavement facial at a not-insignificant rate of speed. I was grateful to have been wearing my new WaveCel helmet, here's why. First, to address your concerns, I have some hair but what's left in my male-pattern-balding-state is cut very, very short... There were some abrasions on my scalp from the WaveCel material, but there were absolutely no "lacerations" just minimal raspberries associated with a big impact. The padding also caused lots of raspberries on my forehead from the impact, again zero actual lacerations from the helmet. What did I actually have for injuries, well in case you were wondering if I actually hit the ground with my head hard with my head? First I suffered a "Tripod Fracture" of my left cheekbone, also called a Zygomatic Plate Fracture, second I suffered a Basilar Skull Fracture. These two skull fractures sent me to the Trauma Unit, where after a number of tests, it was determined I did NOT suffer a concussion. I also had the aforementioned abrasions all over my forehead, some road rash on my cheek, and a pretty bad Subconjunctival Hemorrhage in my left eye. Every doctor I spoke over the next 24 hours to was absolutely astounded, especially when looking at the state of my helmet which had started to collapse under the pressure of the impact, that I had zero symptoms physiologically or symptomatically of a concussion! I will GLADLY replace EVERY helmet I own with a Bontrager WaveCel helmet when my budget allows. For now I am still recovering (5-weeks later) and I have some serious medical bills to pay, but paying one for follow ups regarding Concussion Protocols isn't one of them... THANK YOU TREK!

The sweatband in the helmet is really thin and only 16mm wide, ridiculous. What I have done is cut up a terry towel sports sweatband and glued it along the front of the inside of the helmet. I now can go about 90 minutes to 2 hours before I get sweat in my eyes. I have done this with all my helmets and it works well. Helmets offer some protection from glancing blows and may even prevent or lessen concussions from this type of blow. They protect against cracking your scull. With direct blows to the head concussions are mostly caused by your brain bouncing around in your scull like a bb from sudden forceful deceleration. No helmet can protect against this type of damage. Not MIPS or wavy plastic liners. It’s mostly marketing hype to sell a new product! A helmet is still a good idea. If you hit your head it keeps your scull from breaking and getting pushed into your brain!

    There are pads between the head and the green cheese grater that prevent scratching just from simply sitting on your head during a ride. But I can imagine after a crash your head is going to look like a char grilled steak after an impact even if it does (reportedly) dissipate energy in an impact.
    As for aerodynamics, I bet that helmet sucks balls. I've used training devices (golf and baseball) that use a similar type of porous or vented material to increase aerodynamic drag to increase swing speed, (which is how Trek should have marketed this helmet)
    Trek Spokesman: "It's a great training device. Much better and safer than strapping a small parachute to your back to give your legs a proper workout."
    Did those guys in the design room ever even get on a bike and listen to how informative, yet cynical and opinionated cyclists are concerning new tech? "Hey, look at that guy. He's wearing an aero helmet while training. He looks like an idiot. What does he think this is? A Triathlon? I bet he has a dork disc on his bike too. What a noob!"
    If I would have been in the meeting room when this was presented I would have shot it down in a heartbeat.
    Me: "Is it aerodynamic?"
    Engineer 1: "Ummmm, not really."
    Me: "Is it light?"
    Engineer 2: "Nope!"
    Me: "Will it catch and store honey bees and yellow jackets in your helmet until you stop and roll on the ground in agony?"
    Engineer 3: "Yep"
    Me: "Alrighty then. This helmet we have here is a device for Masochists. Do we have a connection in the BDSM community that we can market this to? And can anyone suggest a way to make it more salable? A new color, or some alterations to it?"
    Engineer 4: "Ummm, I think with a suction cup and a bottle of WD40 we can connect 1 of those dildoes to the top."
    Me: "I like the way you think Engineer 4. You have been promoted to Chief Engineer. Draw one of those up and email me a pic by 10am California time. I've gotta catch a flight to San Fran to show those freaks our idea before the investors get a whiff of this."

As long as a business has a marketing department they'll want to make you buy their product over the hundreds of others in the space. 10 years from now the same companies will be making the same claims among even more choices. A company will never innovate itself out of business. What's important I think is like he said imprints on the head for a crash. I've luckily never had a crash but I imagine it can be quite serious even if not for the fins cutitng into your head. Though depending on how it's engineered (hopefully quite cleverly) it might account for that, but yes, a fleshy mannequin result might be better to understand if it causes some superficial scaring.

    When this technology is us d in moto helmets by Arai or Shoei, then I will trust it. For now, I will put my trust in multi-density eps. I’m not even certain that MIPs has truly proven to be of benefit outside of the MIPs lab, but at least those little suspenders won’t be cutting into anyone’s scalp upon impact.
