A great concept is the combination of both. Sounds more like "we have cash, so let's build something abstract." I guess there were a lot more thought processes going on in the background, but this documentary didn't touch on them. Every single detail and element on a building should have a purpose...its not supposed to be a gimmick.
We look back to Greek and Roman architecture because that is when it was perfected. Every single century since it was erected the world has come to see it there, to visit it there. There was no architecture 300,000 years ago to go back to and 2,000 years from now they will still be going to Rome to see it.I'm not sure sure they will be going to Bilbao 2000 years from now to see it. Frank, you can't talk like your work has stood the test of time when your still alive to talk about it. Let's wait 200 years or 2,000 years and see if your buildings are still drawing people like Rome and Greece are.
There are architects like this guy Gehry, Eric Owen Moss... who are on extreme end of discipline that tries to make buildings into art objects for their shameless vanity and just to be different. Their work will not be influential. It is noteworthy only to those uneducated and have "look at me!" personalities. Serious serial exhibitionists.
Architecture is applied art degree ya ding dongs. There are no theories since nothing is provable but only ideas. Only pretend man made (screwed up as much as man is capable of) complexity since art does not need to make sense
