This was super helpful! And I used Sensei's Library along side it to look up concepts like False eye, Hane, Tesuji, etc. I can highly recommend Sensei's Library!
Thanks so much for this series. You're an excellent teacher. I'm pausing and setting up on my little board I just got, and a few things are starting to click.
- Practice life-and-death problems regularly to improve skills (0:18) - Understand that creating two eyes is essential for a group to live (1:34) - Surround enemy stones to prevent escape and initiate a kill (1:50) - Learn and recognize 'dead shapes' to effectively kill groups (2:20) - Identify and utilize the critical point in shapes to kill or live (2:58) - Apply the 'honey' technique and understand 'death in the hane' (5:50) - Use the 'throw-in' technique to turn potential eyes into false ones (11:53) - Utilize forcing moves strategically to gain advantage (18:07) - Recognize the importance of move order in life-and-death situations (20:15)
hey thanks so much for all your comments! It's great to know that this helped you learn the game and pushes me to keep making more content for youtube :)
Nice explanation.. I do wonder why @16:23 (B) is a 'false' eye and why J8 is no 'real' eye? I can see C or J8 and B survive making it a living group.. It would be blacks turn taking J8 or J9, white takes J9 or J8, black takes H7, so I can see J8 or J9 and B are two eyes for making it a living group for white - because both positions would be suicide for black.. Can someone explain me what I am missing or that I am right..
I looked at the last problem and it seems that white is faster at capturing the 3 black stones than black at capturing the white group. White has to play A2 as his second move.
Made it through them all! This video is really what I needed to understanding eyes in general. Thanks again for the help liked and subbed. Dan here I come :P
after searching to buy go stones ,all I think about white stones: ...this is a cheap one ...this is an expensive one ...oh! this must be very expensive! Great lessons! Thnx
It feels like there is a missing episode between E4 and this E5. You start talking about eyes, false eyes, popping out eyes, as if you had already introduced them in previous episode but I can't find it :-( is there a video where you explain these concepts? Thanks a lot!
great series, been watching one a week and playing 50-100 games on the 9x9 in between. i feel like these 5 videos really helped me get better faster. keep it up mate. and any vids of yours you would recommend for me next?
wow that's great! Glad you found it helpful!! I have videos on all parts of the game, so I would recommend moving on to 19x19! Then, you can figure out what parts of the game you have the most trouble with and find the optimum video to help you out!
Hey, Thanks for the video series! Just started playing and your videos have definitely helped me to improve. I just play on an app right now but do you recommend any websites or apps to play with other people?
Hey Insente. Black should play at B2 first to unconditionally kill white shape. Black playing at B1 let’s white force a Ko in the corner. Love your videos!
4:24 - why does white capture? Wouldnt it be suicide? This is the hardest part of the game for me, no one mentions it. it seems subjective. Or like there is a rule that no one talks about.
It is talked sbout in his first lesson on basic rules. Whereas this video is his 5th lesson, of course he's not going to repeat basic rules already covered 4 lessons ago. Check out his first lesson here th-cam.com/video/xMshtO8h7RU/w-d-xo.html
To put it simply, there's only one thing u need to remember: a capturing move is never suicidal. Here's the rationale: when you play a move that captures your opponent's stones, those stones are removed from the board. This means that the capturing stone that you have just played will always have liberties, at least on the intersections where your opponent's captured stones originally were. Therefore, a capturing move is never suicidal.
Play it out further...black stones on a2 and b2 disappear... black places a stone on either a2 or b2... while takes the other spot, killing it and leaving only one of those spots open... black can now surround the outside and then pop a stone in that one empty space, killing the whole group
Thank you. Was having issues with finding it, and the closed captions that were being auto generated were coming up with "Zoom and go." Btw, thank you for these videos. Is really helping my game.
These videos are very helpful. You keep mentioning an app that sounds like blah-blay-A-pro. I can't quite catch the name. Can you spell it out in the comments?
It turns out that I had already installed that on my Kindle Fire when I was looking for just about ANYTHING to help me with go strategy and tactics. I wish they had some explanations for why the best move is the best, though. It shows me the right answer, but some help with what I should have been looking for would be nice. That's what I like about the puzzles on OGS.
So far this is the toughest one to digest as a newbie. This series, though, is the absolute best. I'm winning about 40-50% of my games, now.
What app or website do you suggest to play go??

I wish you could be my math teacher too. You’re legit dude. Keep up the great skills.
These lessons have been very helpful. The game is fascinating, with a deceptively difficult learning curve.
This topic is so complex I'm going to have to watch the video a few more times. 👍🏻
Your videos really help a lot. Thank you so much for spoonfeeding this basic stuff to us.
For me was very usefull. I am new in go, and try to learn more.

This is the hardest part too understand
15:10 What's that? Harney move?
hane
At 9:43 can't white place it's stone at the lower left corner and capture the two black stones above it ?
It's still only one eye
Play it out further...black stones on a2 and b2 disappear... black places a stone on either a2 or b2... while takes the other spot, killing it and leaving only one of those spots open... black can now surround the outside and then pop a stone in that one empty space, killing the whole group
What was the app mentioned at 17:30?
It is called Tsumego Pro!
Thank you. Was having issues with finding it, and the closed captions that were being auto generated were coming up with "Zoom and go." Btw, thank you for these videos. Is really helping my game.
I could not be more confused
What is the name of the anime in the top right corner of the video?
Hikaru no Go
Nobody's told me what an eye is yet! Real or false 😁
These videos are very helpful. You keep mentioning an app that sounds like blah-blay-A-pro. I can't quite catch the name. Can you spell it out in the comments?
Thank you! The app is called "tsumego Pro" its an app for life and death problems!

It's "hane", meaning jump in Japanese
8:30 What happened to you? :D
This guy looks a bit like Nathan Fielder
At 6:01 are you sayin white can't win? I thought a rectangular 6 was always alive... i.e. th-cam.com/video/GRpJAyD9sE0/w-d-xo.html
Oh wait... I think I see now it is not the same as a rectangular 6 because it is on the edge...
I can beat you
