sailing a laser in weather like this is like nothing else. You feel connected to the boat, an extension of your body, and instinct takes over, it's so ridiculously precise that nothing can feel so satisfying as hitting that perfect jibe just before a wave comes across your bow, or balancing the boat so as to not let the boom drag in the water since the winds are so strong.

Sailed a bunch of quarter tonners, 12M Americas Cup and while we sailed faster with the 12M, nothing gives the feeling of the Laser!

      Is just stupid. Literally hydrofoil.
This type of hull used in the video is bad, and you can see it in every second here.
I mean is a feat for the sailor to manage to handle it, but is doing it like a caveman, no modern knowledge no modern tech.
2015 isn't feudal times, you could see similar year the ifly catamaran with a modern design. And there are similar size mono hull hydrofoils from that time.
I didn't downvote but i would for this reason.
Stupid boat, stupid stunt, not something to be impressed by.

That's a bunch of fun, I've done that on a lazer. But give me a Prindle 16 ,a trapeze ,good blocks, rudders and a hiking stick. That's a better time. Prindle is the most exciting boat I've ever had the pleasure of breaking....break, fix ,sail, rinse and repeat. Be safe about it. Cover your ass. Whatever it takes, sail hard. I used to keep an empty backpack and durable garbage bag to fill with water to help right myself when I flipped several miles out in the Gulf.
    Pushing it in 20-25 knots.
Broken shrouds, blown out tramp, blown out sails. Good times.
Off Docs beach house Bonita Beach Florida. 1990,s so much younger then.
    Great sailing video. Kudos bra.

I have one of these boats and I can tell you from experience that it is a rush when you get Planing. I also hate this boat the most because I have had to replace my mast over 6 times in 2 years and they are not cheap masts when you are in a racing circuit. (I race these in Finland in the ESF club just off of Helsinki in front of Talholmen island). These boats love wind, but I hate the whiplash effect, the point when you are on a line that is so close to a jibe that just a 1 to 2 degree change in boat angle will jibe you and make you flip over, not only dangerous, but as I have experienced multiple times, a mast destroyer. But man, when you are on that perfect limit line, I swear it's better than sex, your heart is racing, the adrenalin is surging, you are hyper focused, everything goes almost silent, you are in the zone, you feel everything the boat and the ocean is doing, you feel every change in the wind to sail pressure through your rudder and main line, water is splashing in your face and you can't see where you are going, instinct takes over, and if there is another who is on the same perfect line as you then the challenge is on to get to that turning point first, it is something that is absolutely unforgettable. Afterwards you are so exhausted, but still in your high, and when you take a sip of that first beer after the race when your already high on adrenalin, oh what a feeling. I swear I never sleep so well until I come home from a race and a beer at the club. If you have never tried it, please do, learn to sail and get yourself into a laser and race them, you will get addicted so quickly, and as I have said before it's better than sex once you get a taste of the real shit.

I did one lap and came in. To much swimming and no control. Next time I eased it to give the sail shape which meant in a gust I could pinch up wind then bear away when the gust had past. It was more like sailing a windsurfer. Just hung out on max hike and sat it flat. No problems. I think that was in about 25 mph of wind +. As a club sailor it's how I coped with strong winds. This would be a different video with a full-size main. Regardless, maybe the wind is steady mid-twenties, a steady 35 will flatten the waves a bit more than this.
Would call this person a medium/fair heavy weather sailor for a few reasons:
Not going deep on the take-off, rather he's giving a lot away by reaching up too far, and for the love of mike if you're trying to reach at all Pull Up The Dang Board!
His gybe recoveries are edited out because the boat is predictably tripping over the board.
Even going to weather, in heavy air it should be showing 6 or 7 inches above the deck (how much depends on YOUR weight), off the wind at least 12 to 14 inches.
I'm not trying to be arrogant here, i'm trying to help You be a better, safer sailor, if you want to be. There are better Laser sailors than me; Garry Hoyt comes to mind and he says when surfing aim for the deepest holes you can see, on the take-off. This guy seems to be avoiding them.

Watching the first few minutes again, you can see how he is unable to get the boat under the rig bc the daggerboard is down too far. That is also making the boat sluggish and relatively slow.
Really, this looks to me like low twenties (if that) gusting to 28.
If your Laser has the Harken Vang upgrade, try to get it tighter than is shown here.
      Cheers!

Obviously, it's the winds. I've sailed a Laser in winds high enough to get it planning at maybe 10 knots or so. This Laser isn't doing 35 knots, but it is being sailed marvelously well in winds that may be hitting 35 knots.
