    I think all those wolves are doing a job on your deer. I hunted for 10yrs with my dad knowing where we hunted there were very few deer. Then we bought our own property. It didnt matter though. It was all about the fun of being at deer camp with friends and family. Listening to the same old stories every year. It doesnt get any better. It's been about 10yrs since I lost my dad and I haven't hunted since. Just not the same by yourself. Thanks for the video george. Yours and Joe's videos are my hunting camp now. I really appreciate them. Stay safe and healthy.

      I know what you're talking about when you lose your dad who taught you how to hunt, why you hunt and what is important about the hunting. I have a good friend, my son and now son-in-law who are my hunting partners now. Glad we can keep the tradition going. Glad you liked the video Todd. Happy Holidays and stay safe.

    It so beautiful out there in the woods. I enjoy going on these virtual trip with you and Joe. I feel the same way when I end my hunting season without any deer, it’s not always about the harvest it’s enjoying the outdoors that’s the reward. I myself I’m having a good year. I harvest a doe in bow season and other doe in rifle season. I fill my deer management permit in NYS. Thanks for this great video full of wolf 🐺 😁. Take care and stay safe.

      Glad to share something new for you. Just about every season, on a warm day, they appear. If you stop and look close, you can see them jumping, hence the name springtails. You do need to look them up to see a picture to notice the tail because they are so tiny. Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video.

    Great video! Really enjoyed seeing what you were up to! The shots of the wolves were amazing - not sure what the answer is. I watched Joe's hunt too. Cabin looks great and you and your son made some great memories! Wish you had a video every week! Glad you are enjoying your beautiful cabin! Really enjoyed the pups too! Thank you for taking us along!

      You're welcome Elizabeth. It is a fun place to spend time with the dogs, family and friends. I don't think my son would enjoy editing a video every week because of the time involved. Maybe I need to learn the editing part too so we could do a few more at times and get them out quicker. Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching. Happy Holidays.

    After a few years of watching Joe's videos and especially the one where he helped you fix your door I was hoping you too made videos and was lucky enough to find your channel. Here in Kentucky we are harassed by coyotes year round and I can only imagine just how much damage several wolves could be. I enjoy your videos and now have another great channel to follow. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and looking forward to more of your videos.

      Thank you for finding and watching us. Joe is a good neighbor up in the woods. Wolves are part of the ecosystem and have a place. Sometimes things get out of balance and it might be at that point in our area. Things always have a way of working out so I expect that will be the case here too. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Stay safe and thanks for watching.

      Pretty much the story I heard from all the hunters I talked with. A very strange season for the most part. At least we saw a few deer, doe and fawns and few bucks. It will be a couple years before any wolf management plan will happen but likely will go back to the courts I'm thinking when someone files a suit . Thanks for watching.

    Greetings from New Hampshire George. Great video. Thankfully we don’t have wolves here but, our coyotes are large and have 25% wolf dna in them. Tell me about the birch bark canoe on the wall? Did you make it or who was the maker?

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think the coyote does as much to the deer as wolves can. Of course where wolves are, the coyotes aren't because wolves drive them out of the area, at least around here. The canoe was made by a man named Bill Hafeman many years ago. My dad bought it from him one day when Bill stopped at our home when I was a kid. A good friend of mine was a summer intern for Bill and learned the craft working with him all summer that year. I stopped to visit during that summer and ended up buying a cedar paddle Bill was just finishing making. That canoe in the cabin is an exact replica of the big ones they made and sold. I believe his granddaughters husband might still be making birchbark canoes on the same homestead but in a newer shop then the one I visited. Thanks for watching.

    Greetings from southern Ontario, George! The wolves look pretty healthy and are probably keeping the deer population down. I’m guessing that they were introduced to the area and are a protected species until there’s too many of them? Thanks for sharing with us. John

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wolves are natural to the area and not introduced. They have been there for centuries. They are protected for the time being but have been taken off the endangered species list but I expect a law suit to happen to try protect them again. The state will manage them if the law doesn't revert back. The pack of 11 that came by me did indeed look in good shape. One had a radio collar on it, the white one in the video. Thanks for watching.

Do keep your little lake a 'secret'!:) There are more than 10,000 lakes in MN, I don't think they'll miss it... Thanks Andrew. Definitely a lot of wolves in our area, more than we have ever seen in the past. If a new law suit isn't filed in Minnesota to protect them I think the state will put another plan together to manage them. We'll see what happens. Happy Holidays and thanks for watching.

      Todd the racks that are outside on the woodshed and the cabin were all from my dad, ones he saved over the years. When he passed away I brought them to the cabin and put them up there. • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was $110/cord delivered so $550. I split a semi load with my neighbor so it is worth it for the logger to bring a load to the cabin. Not many loggers left that do firewood these days so always a challenge to find the wood. I prefer the maple over birch which is the other hardwood in the area. Birch gives off more creosote than maple and must be cut up quick or it will start to break down in a short time and start to get punky. Thanks for watching.

    Don, are you not allowed to shoot wolves?

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No wolves are protected in Minnesota for the time being. That may change now that the wolves have been removed for the endangered species list. The state might manage them again if a law suit isn't filed to change that. I expect that to happen so we'll see what the future brings. Thanks for watching.

    George, how long have you guys been hunting this area? Thanks.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We started hunting there in 1997. My dad passed away in April of 97, so Tom and I started hunting at my cabin that fall. We have sure seen changes over the years, colder in the early years, more snow then, more deer then and a lot less wolves. It is still a good place to spend the fall in the woods. Thanks for the question.

      @@living_north I used to hunt in Ontario not too far from where you guys are. similar changes there. more wolves less deer, although in 2007, they had the largest deer herd in years.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SuperSlappy25 Between the tough winters over the last few years and the increase in wolves, the deer herd has taken a pretty good beating. I think the winters cause the greatest mortality in deer but the wolves play a pretty big part too. I agree that in 2007 the deer herd was much larger. It will continue to fluctuate up and down over time unless something strange happens.

      @@living_north Won't be long and you will have a wolf season. You can buy a tag in Ontario separate from your deer tag.

    Just realized who you are. I think you are George that Joe talks about. You sound like Joe’s dad. Am I correct ?

      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I'm Joe's neighbor at the lake, George. Not his dad although several people have mentioned that. Joe's dad and I are the old guys up there so maybe that is why we sound similar. Thanks for watching.

      There are definitely a lot of them in the area. The state might put together a management plan in the future but for now, they are protected. Time will tell I guess. Thanks for watching.

    Why don't you all dont cut shooting lanes by your deer hunting stands?

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't have a lot of obvious deer trails in our thick woods like a lot of places have. I do cut smaller evergreens and brush to open things up a bit but have only done shooting lanes by a couple stands in the past. Deer seem to wander through the woods where we are more than follow trails so that is why I don't do many shooting lanes. Thanks for watching.

    George, if you don't start killin' a lot of those Wolves, deer huntin like you knew it will be over. Think Crossbow and a shovel. Thats a bad Wolf situation you have there. Good luck.

    • @living_north
      @living_north  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wolves are now off the endangered species list so we'll see what the state decides to do to manage them. As of now, they cannot be hunted but that might change. The state says there are approximate 3000 wolves in the state. I think the number is actually 2-3 times that. If the wolves are managed and we have a few mild winters, the deer numbers will increase significantly. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Push your legislators to open a season on the wolves now that they are delisted. Why bother to go out when you have that many wolves? That was 264 dead and consumed deer that ran by, not 11 wolves. Probably safe to say they likely have wiped out your square mile and the nine square miles around you. Beautiful place but holy crap, talk about an exercise in futility.

      I'm sure the politicians will have plenty of meetings over the next months and years on how to best manage the wolf population. But I also expect a law suit to be filed to put the wolf back on the list of protected animals. In the meantime we spend our time in the woods waiting for the buck to walk by. Thanks for watching.

      I think we saw around 28 deer and 19 wolves this season. I used to think seeing 1 wolf in a season was something. Things have changed for the time being. Maybe the state will manage them again since they were removed from the endangered species list. I expect a law suit to come to protect them again. Time will tell. Thanks for watching.
