    9:35 fun fact, the Swift F7 can use its radar gun sight to guide the beam missile, when in range the sight will auto-lock the first proper target (be careful with allies in the sight), i.e. the Firestreak will auto-track the target thats in the locked cone.

    • @TimsVariety
      @TimsVariety  2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      So - funny you mention that.
      Its a longer topic, but I have confirmation there are multiple open bug reports regarding the behavior of the Firestreak. Sometimes having the radar range-finder on will count as a "lock" on the missile itself, and send it flying off in a random direction, sometimes it seems to do nothing, and sometimes it behaves as you mentioned and makes aiming almost trivial.
      Since the in-game functionality doesn't seem to be consistent, and I didn't want to sit on this vid for a month or two while the devs sort it out, I decided to mention the **intended** functionality.

    For the 2nd flight phase of a ARH missile i have heard it has been referred as "Pitbull" that is when the missile turns on it's internal radar and hunts down it's prey that way, so it no longer needs the aircraft radar to guide it.

    Worth mentioning. You do not need a "fire air to air missile" keybind if you just use the "fire secondary weapons" keybind instead. Helps consolidate controls when you only need a single key to drop bombs, fire rockets, or launch different types of air to air and/or air to ground missiles, just depending on which you have selected at any one time.
    The controls menu will still warn you that you don't have a firing key bound though, so I just set it to something obscure like Alt + Num7 or something and JUST use the fire secondary weapons key

    • @theScottishKoala
      @theScottishKoala 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Slight correction - none of our current all-aspect IR missiles can see a target coming DIRECTLY at you, so you can't use them in fully front-aspect shots like you could a radar guided missile for example. They can see targets at much closer to frontal angles, but not directly nose-on.
      Also worth mentioning - uncaged seekers allow you to LEAD missiles in the same way you'd lead guns, giving the missile a much shallower curve it has to follow to hit a turning target. Point the missile as far in the direction the enemy is flying as you can before firing
      Other than that, fantastic guide as always!

    3:17
    The missile knows where it is
    It knows this because it know where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is, whichever is greater, it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't and, arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation; the variation being the difference between where the missile is and where it isn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it, too, may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows: because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is, however it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice versa. And by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

    I wish they'd add missile callouts, preferably automatic ones. Like automatic callouts in general would be nice like if a tank spots an enemy it will automatically call out type, heading and rough distance. Same with missiles to warn friendlies.
    A few games have this now, its pretty much the only interesting feature in bf 2042 which also mentions if an enemy is near a landmark.

    MCLOS missiles like the AA-20 Nord are some of the best lower-BR helicopter/drone killers out there. It also is really easy to use something like the G91 to take out a large amount of predator drones, in the event of an uptier, as the base AIM-9B don't track drones well. Harder to use, but MUCH easier to target those specific scenarios. It's also a head-on monster in air RB, for anyone who gets a little greedy on initial contact. You can pretty effectively shoot this 3km+ out if you see someone turn towards you. This specific missile doesn't leave a super big trail either, as it's a slow burning cruiser style missile, making it almost impossible to spot unless you visually see the launch off the aircraft

    ----- Important Note on SACLOS Beam Riding Missiles -----
    If you are using an aircraft with beam riding missiles and that aircraft also has a gunsight radar (a thin narrow radar scope on the right of your screen), then make sure to turn off your gunsight radar by using the keybind "Lock Radar/IRST on target" to turn off the radar. Once you do this, your radar scope on the right should disappear and a small green circle will appear indicating the radar gunsight is turned off.
    The reason for this is due to the fact that any sort of radar lock or radar signal will result in the missile becoming uncontrollable as your own gunsight radar acts as interference for the missile. This can also become a problem in head-ons versus other aircraft with gunsight radars as well since they can also interfere with your radar.

    Passive radar homing and anti radiation missiles work on different methods. Passive radar relies on radar reflections of other radar systems to get a lock. The advantages to this is a firing aircraft does not need to illuminate the target with the radar but must use the signals of others.
    Anti radiation directly locks a radar emitter. Unlike passive radar, it will only lock the emitter effectively, not the reflections

  • @tdkyt46
    @tdkyt46 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Technically you do not need two binds for ir missles as they have to "spool/warmup" press fire a2a once to spool up then lock and a second time while locked to fire but you will not be able to unlock/change target unless you physically move out of lock circle.
    Its recommended to have both binds but not necessarily needed

    Great video Tim! I was wondering if you could perhaps make a video series covering all the missiles in each respective country (all the different missiles in USA, USSR, GER, etc.) I feel like this would be good since there's some missiles that are pretty different but the stat cards don't make them obvious, and it would be nice to hear your input on each missile individually. I know this would be a pretty long series, but it if you ever run out of ideas for content or just need to put out some videos it could be a decent move. Keep making the great content!

    The Phoenix missiles go pitbull (it's own radar takes over) at 16km (the lock range is the stat card indicator for this) or less to the target at this point its independent from your datalink you can turn tail and run.
    That being said if it isn't a furball you can run if it's 20km and it has a good chance to find the target unless it made drastic changes of direction

  • @281cu6
    @281cu6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You would normally only keep the lock at the edge of your radar's gimbal limit so you can defensively crank. Then you would break lock when the active radar missile goes pitbull.

    For anyone starting to get the aim-9b in the usa tech tree, my biggest advice for you is to fire them at planes that are out of "energy" as in they just made a big turn and they're flying really really slow.
    The reason i say that is because the IR tracker in the aim-9b can be lost by simply turning fast enough so if a jet is going under 600km/h ish, they can't just turn away from your missiles.

  • @MJRSoap
    @MJRSoap 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    With MCLOS missiles, it's actually optimal to set up a proper joystick to guide them. Be it a complete HOTAS, or just a PS4 or Xbox controller, this allows the missile to be guided with one hand while you continue to fly with the other. You can also set a missile launch bind to that controller to allow you to fire from that controller, minimizing the time where it flys without guidance while you move your hand.
    Radio guided bombs, the Fritz-X, also use these binds and can be guided much more accurately this way as keyboard inputs are absolute and are 100% in a direction, or no guidance, a controller allows for finer guidance of the weapon.

    • @MJRSoap
      @MJRSoap 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should also be noted that, currently, Active Radar Homing missiles, don't give any radar warning when they enter their terminal phase. Unless your vehicle has the Missile Alert Warning System, MAWS, you will receive only a search ping on RWR systems from the launching plane.

    2:44 Kind of a nitpick and it's not actually incorrect, but for clarification, technically the seekers of uncaged missiles are also on a gimbal. This gimbal is simply locked forward prior to launch, giving it the "cage." After launch, the seeker is free to move anywhere inside of the gimbal limit. For example, almost all of the AIM-9 past the AIM-9E have a 40 degree gimbal limit. This comes as a shock to some, as they all look vastly different before launch. But the AIM-9D (caged), AIM-9J (10 degree cage), and AIM-9H (40 degree cage) all can maneuver at the same 40 degree maximum angle. The only difference between a caged missile like the AIM-9D and an uncaged missile like its upgrade, the AIM-9G, is some software.

      @@collander7766 For a tutorial like this, I had to make a lot ... a lot ... of simplifications to keep it under 1 hour lol. Plus, I wasn't able to get clarification from the snail on a few specific bits of minutia, so I had to leave out a few things I had wanted to include.

    one thing i should say is if you slave an IR missile with your radar lock, deactivate the lock after firing the missile.
    it will stop flashing the RWR of the target, and also prevent a friendly being killed because your radar lock switched to him last second

    from 17:04 and on can be best explained by "The missile knows where it is, it knows this because it knows where it isn't."

    Missed the fact that SACLOS missiles track on things like gun radar as-well, very useful functional for headons because it allows for turning off target slightly

    Rule of thumb most sidewinders have a effective range of 2-4km (5km in later variants or on faster planes)
    But to be fair I managed 6km shots In a f14 by shooting from up high and at 1.3 mach at a low and slow target target
    The Russian counterpart the r60 usually max out at 4km for me while the r3 has aim9b capabilities so also 2-4km
    Sparrows have up to 20km and the f variant up to 30km (my personal range records in public matches)
    Phoenix up to 50km

    QUESTION: At 17:16, what control moves a target lock from one enemy to another without having to remove the lock and reacquire it? I have all the controls for radar, but my radar refuses to do it. I only have a plane with SARH radar at the moment if that makes a difference. I'm on console if it makes a difference

    • @TimsVariety

      If you mean the ripple fire, I used my keybind for switch target after each shot. It only works in track while scan, and only with ARH mossiles. (or maybe IR if you had 4 people flying in formation right in front of you at close range or something weird)

    I am almost certain that the circle on SARH missiles is not lock strengh but a hit calculation depending on range. if you use the rectangular radar you can see the range marks actualy.

    • @TimsVariety
      @TimsVariety  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not, its the strength of the lock - you usually just get a stronger lock at shorter ranges. I mentioned the range indications on the scope in my radar tutorial.
