March 2020 I purchased my second consecutive Subaru Outback. The first was a Limited 3.6R and my new one is an Onyx XT. I believe I will be a Subaru owner for life. Safety, utility, and a great AWD system is what keeps me coming back. I would love a hybrid one day but for now having the maneuverability of a car and the space and utility of an SUV will keep me buying.

I have a 2020 and in general I like it but the touch screen is a step backwards. Impressive at first until you realize it’s dangerous, makes you have to take your eyes off the toad longer to make adjustments to the climate control for example. That’s why the had to add the camera above the touch screen that detects which way your face is pointed and gives you that annoying alert to pay attention. Also they cut corners here and there to save money and reduce weight for example my 2018 Outback Limited with the 3.6 six cylinder had a hood that would stay open without needing that metal rod that props it open. My 2020 has the prop. Boy do I miss my 2018 especially the 6 cylinder that they discontinued in an effort to meet government CAFE epa standards.

I'm purchasing a 2021 Subaru Outback Premium on Saturday and I can not wait! Yes, it's a few years old and has a few miles on it, (44,500), but I'm not afraid as it's a Subaru! I'm selling a newer 2022 Camry with only 32,850 miles on it! The Camry is so unconfortable it hurts my hip and back just to get to work, about 40 minute drive! I need comfort. I test drove or sat in the Mazda CX5, CX50, CX30., Buick Encore GX, Buick Envista, Rav4, ,and several other models. Nothing came close to the comfort of the seat in this Outback. I'm excited!
I found a 2021 Limited (2.5L) with 38K miles, no warranty bumper-to-bumper left so I'm leary. Since you now have one with close to 50K miles now, are there any tips on what I should check carefully before buying it (with only the powertrain warranty for another year).
I bought a 2012 Subaru OUtback 2.5i Limited. It's been a great machine and I love the AWD system. Really handy when we in the northeast get huge snowstorms. I like the outdoorsy look of the Outback and appreciate that it's a wagon. There really isn't that many options out there for a middle-class wagon. Volvos, Mercedes, and Audi offer wagons but they are all very expensive. I like this one since it's not too show offy like those. I would probably buy a 2018 model when mine gets up in mileage. So far it's at 106,00 miles, and plan on selling it at 165,000 miles
Look at the 2021 Ascent and as it's the flagship, wait until some of those features trickle down. I suspect the digital rear view mirror will be in the 2022 Outback and Pathfinder but it's only in the Ascent Touring in 2021, for example.
Thought that this was a really good video of the Subaru Outback👍🏻. I thought that the Outback looks especially good in black with the aluminum wheels👍🏻.
My 2011 Outback’s transmission had to be replaced at 100,000 miles. We were told we were out of luck and were going to have to pay $8000 to replace the transmission. After contacting the USA corporate office, they finally agreed to pay the replacement cost. At 160,000 miles, it is now leaking oil and going to cost a couple thousand dollars to repair. With only a $3,500 trade in value, it is time to buy a new car. I’m definitely concerned about potential transmission issues in a new Subaru. While I want to test drive the 2021 Outback, I am looking hard at the 2021 Mazda 6 as well.

The new touch screen is a step backwards. For example, The touch screen requires you to divert your eyes off the road to make any adjustments to the climate control which is why they had to add the camera above the screen to annoyingly warn you to pay attention. Very annoying and dangerous. Used to be just one touch of a button switch to change back and forth from recirculate to outside air. With the touchscreen you have to touch the screen twice and in different places on the screen. Also, there is absolutely no reason why the computer generated mpg shouldn’t be the same as the actual true mpg. The computer always says your mpg is better than it really is bu one to one and a half mpg better.
I’d like to be convinced that it’s worth it but not totally sold. Apparently, the XT is not going to be sold, so we’d have just the slow version. I know it’s pro’s and cons but there are great features on my 2007 Outback, which was sold as a ‘sports wagon’ with frameless doors, a proper automatic gearbox and a huge glass sunroof. I’m reluctant to let go of this version. I really think that the CVT gearbox is awful and the mpg is so low. Also, the cost of them in the U.K. is so much more than yours in the States. A real shame and I think that at least a few of these negative points should be addressed, particularly the price!
Not much that you can do about the CVT - most car companies have/will go to CVTs, whether we want them or not. The good news for Subaru buyers is that their CVT is one of the best transmissions that have been made to date. I agree with you on the console - they screwed that up.
The only reason why some (first of all Japanese and VAG with their Multitronics) car manufacturers use CVT’s is that it’s cheaper in production than common automatic gearboxes. No one cares about “effectiveness” and “emission lowering”, only money matters. In any case customer will pay full price, and marketing will help him to make a “right” choice.

It clearly demonstrates that you do not comprehend how marvelous the Outback's CVT is. It also demonstrates that you are not reading other reviewers' evaluations of current similarly priced vehicles with automatic transmissions. Current automatic transmissions in the Outback's price range vary from 6 to 10 gears, and they fequently are reviewed as having "abrupt upshifts from 2nd to 3rd" or being "slow to downshift from 8 to 4". Carmakers' automatics differ from one another dramatically, with widely variable results, often within a single brand's lineup. And you are critical of the Outback's beautifully smooth CVT. Really?
The Subaru’s CVT is better than what’s found in Japanese rivals, but whether it mimics gears or not, from a driving aspect it diminishes the experience. The 6 speed found in the Mazda CX-5 isn’t the most refined, but it’s more enjoyable than the CVT with the Outback. Hyundai and Kia are now using dual clutch transmissions which enhance the driving experience for crossovers that typically wouldn’t be engaging to drive. Among its Japanese rivals, the Subaru’s CVT performs better than Nissan and Honda, but there’s no way I’d say it’s better than a true automatic.
Until it dies. Very much depends on driving style and conditions (off-road, short distance rides etc.), but in any case about a half of normal automatic gearbox life.

Last time I checked was at least $3500.00 Cdn(Parts, Labor, tax) plus it was sitting in the garage for at least15 business days because the head had to be sent out to a machine shop. 5 reasons why I should buy a 2021 Subaru? Um we’re in mid 2022
*Clicks on a video that was posted November 7th, 2020, complains that’s it’s not the current model year…
@@BostonAutoBlog Duh, so why wasn’t it taken off TH-cam?
@@Doc1855 TH-cam is definitely not sending their best and brightest. Thanks for the laughs
@@BostonAutoBlog I’m glad you saw the humor
And one reason to NOT. CVT
Then you'd better get out in the car market NOW while you can still buy a car with a regular transmission. Most car companies have/will go to CVTs, whether we want them or not.
Good luck, find a car made in the 90s
Never keep a Subaru for more than 5 years unless you have money set aside for the pricey head gasket job.
How much is the head gasket job
@@citysurfer1 Hello Ben Ben! Last time I checked was at least $3500.00 Cdn(Parts, Labor, tax) plus it was sitting in the garage for at least15 business days because the head had to be sent out to a machine shop. You could even add the hassle and expense of renting a vehicle or taking transit during that time. Please don't forget that it is not a permanent fix. Everytime the head is machined, the compression ratio increases and necessitate the use of high octane gasoline to prevent knocking. On top of that, plenty can go wrong due to the level of expertise the mechanic possesses.
@@citysurfer1 Furthermore, the mechanics would love to upsell you: water pump, timing belt, crank seal, valve lash adjustment, valve cover & tube seals etc which potentially add another 1200 bucks to the total. They just love to say, "since you have the engine out for the job, you might as well do all those to SAVE money." Yeah right.
That problem was fixed in 2012.
My 2013 2.5 Outback has done 140,000 miles. Still runs like new. Then again I do service it correctly.
