This show is one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Phil Glenister & Keeley Hawes were brilliant together and I'd like to see them do more projects together. Life On Mars and Ashes to Ashes. Simply brilliant television.
Yes, finally, they kiss. Only the kiss we'd all been waiting for turned out to be a kiss goodbye. I was saddened by the ending. It was a bitter pill to swallow having rooted for them over three series for it to end that way. I wish Alex and Gene could have had more time together at the end somehow so we could all enjoy the moment but it's hard when they have to wrap the up the story. The BBC really struck gold with this awesome show. It's a shame we don't see happy endings in TV so much these days. They elude many of us in real life so we should at least be able to enjoy them on screen.
This scene always makes me cry :'( Ok so I understand that Gene can't leave 'his world' because he hasn't been laid to rest so he has unfinished business. My theory is that because the find his body in 2008, once it has been identified, he will be able to join Alex who is waiting for him in the pub. Then they can pass onto heaven together! At Least that's what I really really hope will happen!
My theory is that in order to move on he needs to replicate the career he would have had if he had lived, because he was so devoted to the idea of being a police officer. Solve lots of cases, inspire lots of officers, groom someone to take his (psychopomp) job after him, and then retire and go to the pub after about 50 years of service. It's 1983 in his world at this point so that's about 30 years of service. 20 to go. He might also want to have a 20 year 'retirement' where he gives advice to his replacement psychopomp before moving on.
@@MR.ICE. is right. Gene is like an angel or a bodhisattva. He has sacrificed his own personal happiness to be of service to the lost souls of police officers so that they can transition to the higher life. It is a role he willingly entered into because of the innate goodness and nobility in his own soul. Maybe at some point (time is not really linear in these worlds) he may join Alex. Why not? But his deep compassion, kindness and love, that created his world, keeps him there for now. And that's why we love him...
Beautiful ending to the series, but so desperately sad. I had been rooting for Gene & Alex to get together, but that final, tender kiss said more than any amount of snogging or shagging ever could. The romantic in me does hope that they did ultimately see each other again. They did love each other, after all. :)
I like to think that after a full life of helping dead coppers come to terms with their deaths, an elderly Gene is welcomed into The Railway Arms by Nelson and shares a pint with Sam, Alex, Chris, Ray, Annie, and Shaz.
This scene will never not make me weep. What a beautiful yet oh so bittersweet ending to this masterpiece! I laughed and I cried so much with this series and loved all the characters to the bone! Keeley Hawes and Phil Glenister gave me two heroes for life and a power team I will always root for! Come on BBC, what will it take for you to bring this show back somehow? A 2hr special maybe? Or an A2A reunion con??
Oh my god I've been rewatching all the episodes and I forgot how much I cried when this bit played Gene is a softy really and it's so sad to have to see them say goodbye :( its beautiful but heartbreaking at the same time!
I have to say, it was maddening that the almost-kiss in Alex's apartment after the slow dance wasn't concluded. No woman in her right mind would answer the door at that moment!
so wanting to see a last episode where gene comes to terms with his death and realises he needs bolly and goes to the pub and says hi sammy boy and then goes up to alex and says you are annoying, stubborn but i happen to love you and then they kiss. i also wanted to see them as a couple together at work and see that dynamic. to stop myself from grieving i've had to imagine it. ashes to ashes is brill. alex drake is the most inspirational woman showing off her strength and vulnerability in equal measure both to her advantage. gene is the sexiest man with a heart of gold underneath his passionate dominating persona. she tries to fight loving him and cant and he loves her and tries to fight it but cant. brill. and chris and ray and shaz are such great characters too.
Amazing series and incredible bittersweet ending. Seeing Nelson greeting Ray, Chris, and Shaz got me teary. As did Alex giving Gene his number badge to help remind him who he was.
Agree wholeheartedly Amorcomouna :'( He loved her and she loved him. The music and the way he smiles help to create this beautiful scene. The kiss speaks for itself!
Oh my. We've only just finished watching the final episode as we didn't see it originally. I feel bereft and will miss Gene Hunt. What a brilliant piece of writing and acting. Off to have a little cry...
Whilst crying i sat infront of the tv saying 'go with her ..gene go with her'. Needless to say ended up in floods of tears! lol Ashes to Ashes will be missed. Gene Hunt you are truely a legend as are you Mr Glenister!
I personally think that Gene won't be able to rest until he brings the criminal who murdered him to justice. It is clear to see that Gene holds the idea of justice very highly, otherwise the young man he once was would probably have gone for something more flashy than a police officer when looking for a job as he was all about appearance and being visibly heroic. Choosing policing indicates that Gene saw a true heroism in the work that police did. So no matter how much he loves Alex, I think he will be waiting until his murderer is convicted. In order to let go and fully come to terms with his death, Gene needs this closure, and I personally think that creating another set of series exploring him finding closure (I.e. his murderer) would be fascinating.
I only saw this last night (in Australia). What a series!! I HATE TV but this was just sublime. Just sensational. Thanks to all involved and thanks for posting the vid here. Peace.
As someone who just binged LOM and this show together it’s really interesting when you look back on it that neither Sam nor Alex were the real main characters. Sure they were the protagonists of their own stories, but in the end it all circled back to Gene and his world, and while LOM is definitely more if Sam’s story (perhaps due to the writer’s potentially not having thought about this until after the fact) as A2A continued it became increasingly obvious that the series was more about Gene than Alex. I sincerely hope that the supposed LOM revival comes to fruition, as I still think so much more could be explored about Gene and his world, if not then another spinoff/sequel series with a Bowie title, perhaps set in the 90s or later depending on if they could make it work
That's because Keeley Hawes as great as she is wasn't as strong a leading character as John Simm was and Phillip Glennister ended up carrying what was on paper some fairly average and often predictable storylines throughout A2A and making it seem better then it actually was. LoM was vastly superior overall and less drawn out!
@@adamknight7041 LoM was a better self-contained series but A2A suffered from leaving too many questions unanswered and opening up a whole new dimension to the plot that made it convoluted. Granted, A2A did feel like there were a few too many filler episodes, but overall I thought it was decent. I immensely enjoyed both but I agree that LoM was the better out of the 2. Hopefully Lazarus will tie up loose ends and be an entertaining watch at the same time.
Wait until Life On Mars:Lazarus comes out. Hope they don't screw it up. This was a perfect ending for Alex & Gene but with John Simm opting only to do 2 Seasons we never got proper closure with his character. In a year or two we will. That's when the show runner says it'll be ready
you know what i haven't watched the show for ages so i thought i could watch this with out getting emotional - one minute and twenty one seconds later and I'm bawling!

:'( I'm gonna miss this show sooo much!! *holds back a tear* but wow, what an ending, it's been such a pleasure to watch over the 2 years along with Life on Mars and both will never be forgotten. Yay for the guv and alex!! Fantastic shows!! Brilliant finale!! :D
I think this is the first time a show has ended and I've felt like it was right to end there. I wish it hadn't ended, but where do you go from there? But for me, the heartbreaking part was where Alex finally realises what we already knew, which was that she'd already died.
I find it funny how its been uploaded by the BBC with the caption "Finally they kiss" as if they have been waiting like we have. Really BBC you could have made them write the kiss in sooner and have them kiss a lot lol
@Graniteheart Yeah, I agree! The great music on this show was always such a treat. Listening to the lyrics would tell you so much about what was really going on in a scene. Remember when Gene awkwardly asks Alex out to dinner while the song "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" was playing in the background? Brilliant, in retrospect. But the piano riff you mention - heartbreakingly beautiful, & proof (to those who still need it!) that Galex was a real love story, just as much as Sam & Annie's.
That was such a good ending but I thought it would have been nice if Gene had then said something to Keats (in a way that only Gene could) and then followed Alex and the others into the pub
Best part is that it's almost exactly the same piano riff as when Sam and Annie finally kissed in the Life on Mars finale. Damn near brought me to tears both times.
Google it, they confirmed it in April this year. It’s meant to span across more than one decade so not just the 70’s and it’s the final EVER series. I don’t think we’ll SEE Bolly because they were going to bring Sam back in the final of ashes to ashes but decided it would steal Alex’s thunder, they’d probably feel the same about her being in life on Mars but I’m hoping in the final episode of the new series he goes to the pub to be with her. I dunno, maybe, it’ll just be a prequel to ATA but that would be devastating. Fingers crossed for them anyway. I am way too emotionally invested in this!
That's one of the beautiful things about this though, he is never really alone in a sense. At the end of the episode you get a new "Sam Tyler" or "Alex Drake" wondering where he is, his lines very similar to Sam's. This indicated to me that Gene CHOOSES to stay and help other lost souls of the police heal and accept that they are dead so that they can move on to the afterlife, which has good and bad aspects in the idea that it will never end.
What really got me was the twist as you just don't see it coming; Shaz, Chris and the Carling are all dead, Keats is the Devil and Gene Hunt is a Guardian Angel type. And to top it off Drake's actually been dead all this time and never gets to see her daughter, let alone grow up
@charlandlen I'm glad it made you feel better! I really do see it this way. I think the writers loved these characters & wanted happy endings for them, so how things are left w/Gene & Alex is just meant to be a brief (in eternal reckoning) interruption to their love story. Gene's like a soldier - when the war's over, he'll quit "re-upping" & come home. Til then there's a job to do, but that won't last forever - them being together will. Makes my burst into tears :( They should make one final series and have it based on all of them, Alex, Sam , Annie, Viv, all of them. where Gene finally walks through that door, It'd be soppy, but good!

I couldn't see the telly for all the tears in my eyes. The difference between L on M and A to A was that I wanted sam to get home but I wanted Alex to stay with Gene in the 80s
I loved this show and I feel deeply sad that i binged it in a week or so. My only gripe is that i wish there were more stories and that it went on for a few more years. 😭😭😭
Love to Gene and Alex the ending was heartbreaking there is word of a life on mars remake I hope Alex is part of if wud love to see gene at rest and pass over and Alex and be waiting for him with ray and the rest of them

Gene Hunt in my eyes is a "Arch angel" helping deceased coppers get to heaven. In the end, we find Gene is just doing gods work. A very emotional and gripping story. I wish television in America was this good. British actors are phenomenally great. I wish this series could f went on for 3 more, but I guess it was time to go.

THIS WILL NEVER BE OKAY.
I couldn't see the telly for all the tears in my eyes. The difference between L on M and A to A was that I wanted sam to get home but I wanted Alex to stay with Gene in the 80s
I still think they did Alex and Gene dirty with that kiss.
I Thought this was a better ending than Live on Mars.Great show and i'll miss a lot.
YAAAAAY for the kiss :D
Nearly 10 years & still waiting for that elusive sequel set in the 90's.
*It's never happening is it?*
*:'(*
if they do, i think it will be a tie up of glen finally visiting the pub, ut ave him team with sam to rival the devil
Bevelling Retorts it’s happening finally xx
Supposedly might happen finally, hope covid didn't delay it to the point of not happening
I loved this show and I feel deeply sad that i binged it in a week or so. My only gripe is that i wish there were more stories and that it went on for a few more years. 😭😭😭
I have just binged it in a week and now I am bereft, really missing it.
@@ellebee6712 I binged it a year ago and I still think of this show regularly 😥
Tears Everywhere
They've got a saloon bar !
fantastic ending.....shame she couldn't stay with him, always knew Gene Hunt was an angel :O)
it made me cry, did anyone else cry when alex stepped into the pub?? blubbed like a baby. so gonna miss the show ;(
Love to Gene and Alex the ending was heartbreaking there is word of a life on mars remake I hope Alex is part of if wud love to see gene at rest and pass over and Alex and be waiting for him with ray and the rest of them
wow that's been faved... how long did I wait for that kiss! thanks God she's not as tart as he thought... ^^
oh god im crying all over again just like last night..Gene and Alex are ment to be together....oh i wish they all could have stayed together..Gene,Alex,Ray,Chris and shaz..broke my hart when they went in to the put :( ahses to ashes is the best program the bbc have ever made. i loved all 3 series
