Thanks Elok for sharing your thoughts on bands in the 1970s and 1980s. I was an 80s teen and talk talk with mark Hollis haunting vocals and compositions spoke to me. I'm from the west of britain. I live in Indonesia now after 25 years in Asia. I am happy to remember beautiful music like this whenever I need it. I'm glad you find it too. You are a nice young lady on a journey.

This is why we old folk in our mid-60's will ALWAYS love the synth-pop music of the middle-1980's. "It's My Life" is very special to me--almost 40 years later--because it helped me through a four-year battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma (which I obviously won because "it's my life" then, and it's still my life today.) The POWER of this song lies in its deeply felt BEAUTY, and those dual aspects are inseparable. Sometimes I feel as if this miraculous recording does, in fact, tap into the human collective unconsciousness through the voice of Marc Hollis. One cannot deny its appeal across time and distance. It leaves its mark on us all. In the harmonies of Talk-Talk's "Its My Life" people find a harmony within themselves as truth and beauty mesh. A joyous and inspiring song from a man who was known specifically for his "gentle beauty."

Talk Talk, a band who only got more and more interesting as their albums progressed. Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are masterpieces. Mark Hollis--one of those rare artists who emphasized quality over quantity (as did Scott Walker, who died the same year as Mark, and like him also started out popular/commercial and ended up very much not). And when he had said all he could say artistically, he simply, gracefully stopped.

Mark Hollis had an incredible soulful voice while looking like he's not even trying.
Please check out Talk Talk's more intimate albums : The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden.
But do yourself a favor : listen to these albums when you're in a calm place alone while focusing only on it. I know this might seem over the top but these albums are a spiritual experience. I can almost guarantee you'll have a whole new worldview after the listening and even might remark things you've never noticed before.
And because you like crazy guitar (no metal without this element), if you're looking for a mesmerizing live performance, check out Prince live "Play that funky music - Hollywood Swinging - Fantastic Voyage". And "Bambi" at the Tokyo Dome for pure shredding performance.

One thing you should know about me is I know what I’m talking about when it comes to good music and two, I never recommend bad music ever! You are one of the few people I think might actually trust me on my music suggestions. I would never feed you anything I thought you and your audience wouldn’t enjoy. I have excellent music taste and will only recommend songs I know are great ok? Not just what I want to hear but actually really good songs.

Thanks Elok! Glad you enjoyed! You gave a nice appreciation of it and Mark. Mark is the rare artist who, as the band was getting more and more popular, went completely away from commercial music. You mentioned that in your description. Very rare for someone to distinctly say “no” to money like that. I can’t think of another artist who did it so clearly in the pop/ rock field. You could see it in the way he was wearing sunglasses and then just sat down in the middle of the song, not caring about being “a rockstar“. And then in the early 90s he basically stopped writing music. So he was definitely a man of artistic integrity. RIP to him, an outstanding artist. They have a bunch of other good songs if you ever want to react to them in the future. Thanks again! 🤍🤍

Wonderful reaction & I agree with every word. As time goes by my feelings about Mark Hollis are getting deeper & deeper. His final album was sublime, he disappeared to a different world ... R.I.P. Mark. Your spirit is eternal.

I'm glad to see that you appreciate the good music that Talk Talk made when you are so young. I like it a lot and I hope that happens to more young people, not only with Talk Talk but also with more bands from other times. Keep it up! 👍😊❤

I too, consider Talk Talk to be of my favorites. Talk Talk was the first song I latched onto. It was their most discofied songs; the 12" is really good. Then they kept putting out albums that were more intelligent and more diverse sounding. I think there are 5 real albums and all worth owning. This is one of their 5 best. TH-cam as 2 or 3 complete concerts from around 1994. Excellent shows. I think he sang from his diaphram, and worked on lowering his voice (as all men should). Is it a baritone? Even in the concerts, he sings with an incredible range and with the right emotion. Mark Hollis passed in 1986 or 1996. A big loss. Steven Pettinga, Indianapolis.

Not a bad live performance but I still like the studio version better because you can hear all the instruments in their purest clear form along with his voice.

Hello elok again. Haven't heard ttalk talk in years. I had the album with this song on it. My favourite song was called life's what you make it. I think i got that right, it's been so long. Very distinctive 80s sounding band. Don't know what happened to them. Cheers from London josh.

I don't disparage Gwen Stafani's performances (she is a talent in her own right), but I happen to prefer Mark Hollis on this song because he puts way more emotion into it than she does. But after all, it is his song and its meaning seems to have been somewhat personal for him.

Great early 80’s pop track! (Though I get a little new wave feel to it!)
Definitely not Garbage, they came out about ten years later😎
Another great song in this lane and time period is Valerie by Steve Winwood, also redone by No Doubt...oops Eric Prydz, and that ain’t no Hollaback Girl!😂

I don't believe that you can look at Mark's life as a waste. Without doubt 64 years old seems way too short, but Talk Talk's last three albums and Mark's astonishing self titled debut more than make up for his lack of years!
