Ha! Looking back to a young up and coming Lendl ... he didn't fully know it then ... but would be one of the best players of the next decade of his era. Such a clean hitter of the ball. The "father" of the modern power game.
Interesting to see how Lendl changed his strokes over the next few years. Everything became more elongated--but especially his forehand which became a loopy whip. Also, his serve here had him landing on his back foot (very old school) and later he landed on his front.
1980 and I can clearly see the ball! What gives? If only all the old matches were of this quality! Not only is it quite clear but the sense of speed is also enhanced.
Vilas already had a kind of proto Rafa high spin ball :). So interesting to have watched this match. Among other aspects Lendl already had improved a part of his backhand long way. What age was Vilas?. Looked like very strong and well prepared fisically. By that time these couple of excellent exponents of modern tennis did already HIT hard the ball with rather topspin aiming to short angles not only 'pushing' forward or pointing to corners. I like how well they completely covered every sides of the court to restart the point. I see Vilas heavily breathing going to his bench after a long point. Great athletes already.

nice upload. man, the game here is about the precision needed to use rackets with a smaller sweet spot. i know it's clay but these guys are just standing around waiting for the opponent to hit the ball back. power/speed is not really part of the game! neither is rushing the net, at least for these guys... i mean, Vilas hits ball within inch of baseline to Lendl's backhand and still stays back! kind of frustrating - different times, although the particular players and surface admittedly has something to do with it too.
Interesting. Lendl hadnt really developed his backhand yet. He kind of pushes the ball on his backhand, where later on he had alot more power and topspin and really hit through the ball. A couple of points there i was expecting him to smash the ball away on his backhand but instead pushed it back, but a few years later those shots he would be smashing them for winners.
Vilas and Lendl. Both built so different. Lendl is a typical bean pole tennis player who wants to carry no extra weight , including muscles. Vilas built like a boxer or rugby player.
