    Lendl was a machine with classically orthodox and beautiful strokes that rarely faltered. In my top five greatest players of all time.

    Perez-Roldan reached the French Open QF that year. He lost to Agassi at the French Open. That year en route to the QF he knocked out Stefan Edberg.
    In 1989 he lost a close fourth round match at the French open to Boris Becker.
    Perez-Roldan was a clay court specialist.

    I remembered very well this match, I was amazed to watch this new player, very mighty on clay courts, young man from Argentina, and had several important matches against McEnroe, Agassi, Lendl, and was a pain of ass for all them!, tremendous tennis player, had important injures and then finished his promising pro career....

      Sad about the injuries. Wish we could have seen him at his best for longer.

    Eduardo Bengoechea, Guillermo Perez-Roldan, Alberto Mancini, Martin Jaite,...
    The argentinian Clay-Players of the late 80s who regularly reached their top during the Clay-Season.

    Grande Ivan! L'occhiata a fine partita che ha riservato a Peréz parlava da sola: mai sfidare Ivan Il Terribile, come hai osato?!Ahahaha
    Comunque a me mancano da morire queste sfide e questi personaggi così carismatici degli anni 80-90

    Lendl had perfect groundies, very consistent, even his deadly forehand.

    Tennis was just great to watch back then! Even a match like this [who the §§% is Perez-Roldan??].. Lendl playing consistently serve and volley ON CLAY!!?

      Exactly. Who the heck is Perez-Roldan?I had not heard of him before this match.1988 was a pretty mediocre year for Lendl. He lost in the semis in Australia to Cash. He lost to Svensson in the quarters at Roland Garros.He lost in the semis at Wimbledon, i think. Then he lost a 5 set thriller to Wilander in the finals of the US Open.Pretty poor.Especially when you consider that Lendl won The French and The Open the year before. And got to the finals of Wimbledon...... I have not heard of Perez-Roldan since this match.

    Lendl was already with his mind in Wimbledon! In my honest opinion he let th eQF in Paris vs. Svensson pass by to save energy for Wimbledon

  • @vincenthannah6556
    @vincenthannah6556 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    i think two things really got into Lendl's head. First, he was not playing very well. He made a lot more unforced errors in this match than he was used to. Also, this "nobody" was giving him all he could handle.

    Lendl still playing with that crap Adidas Racquet from the early 80s if he had changed to a bigger head racquet he would have won more slams

    • @ericfreeman5795
      @ericfreeman5795 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so. He played with that smaller head because he wouldn't be able to control his shots with a larger stringbed.

    • @hymansahak181
      @hymansahak181 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eric Freeman
      That Adidas racquet was 80 square inches. Had he switched to an 85 square inch (even with the same frame), he would have a few more key wins under his belt.
      I was a big Lendl fan back in the day.
      The losses that hurt the most were:
      86 Wimbledon final against Becker
      87 Wimbledon final against Cash
      88 US Open final against Wilander
      89 French Open R4 against Chang
      89 US Open semifinal against Becker
      89 US Open final against Becker
      91 Aussie Open final against Becker
      I think a slightly larger frame would have helped him win 3 of those losses.

      @@hymansahak181 Do not forget the Semifinal at Wimbledon 1990 against Edberg. That year Lendl skipped Paris to really prepare for Wimbledon, won convincingly in Queens and actually looked like the favourite to win Wimbledon, but Edberg was just phenomenal.
      Your theory I doubt though. Lendl was an intelligent and very analytic player. If a bigger raquet was an obvious advantage he would have proceeded to one. Only in 1990 he changed to a bigger one, so that indicates that things were not so simple.
      About your list: Basically in all games ivan was the weaker player, I could not remember one of these games where Ivan was better and lost unfortunately. Do you?

    • @OzyMandias359
