Lendl is brutal....Muster was still young....Ivan showed he was ready to win Wimbledon with serve and volley..feel sorry for him that never happened...his tennis iq was superb ,way above all his contemporaries...
The ironic thing is, had Lendl been playing today I feel he would have won Wimbledon at least 2 or 3 times because the bounce is so much slower and higher now than in Lendl's day.

Despite becoming a naturalised American, Lendl got a lot of Cold War prejudice. People would emphasise his ‘strict regime’ in terms of training, and characterised him as ‘robotic,’ marginalising his talent (I blame Rocky IV to an extent), which is kind of rich bearing in mind the guy gave everybody else a shot by playing for most of his career with a squash racket.
jeffwads ~ Dude, it wasn’t a car/bike wreck, this is what happened, the night before he was scheduled to play a final against Lendl (I think in Miami), he was taking his bags out of a car’s trunk at a shopping mall or something when a car coming from the opposite direction crashed against Muster’s car head on. This caused the rear bumper to hit Muster on the knee, which led to surgery and months of insane recovery. And yes, the footage of his recovery is insane.
never noticed how wristy lendl's swing was before - muster was a good player, always gave it his all but i think his knee may have still been a factor - lendl looks a little nonchalant if not bored - still won

i trained with his former trainer, hardass mfer, one of the best all around. constant pushing, constant demanding better by every stroke. he made you grind and fokus no matter what, one hour drill with that guy was more than 4 hours with regular youth competition trainer, a lot better like day and night difference. some may not liked him or his methods but as a player i can say i loved him. when training becomes a challenge, every stroke is a challegende todo it perfect, then its just more fun
Lendl is very smart and uses it to his advantage. It looks strange to see him wearing a long shirt lol.He Normally has it tucked in to funny.Muster got so frustrated with Lendl drop shots lmao
I often wonder why Lendl stuck with that racquet there were bigger more powerful racquets around that surely would have given him more power on his ground strokes
When he first switched to mizuno in 1990, he used a bigger headed racquet. He felt that he couldn't control it though, so switched back to using his Adidas racquet, before mizuno made a smaller headed racquet more to his liking
What an admirable effort by Muster to not only recover from the severe knee injury caused by a drunk idiot driver in Key Biscayne, but to successfully come back as a professional Tennis player. Muster for sure still wasn't in his best form. However, this match was dominated by Ivan in a really impressive manner. And it was quite exceptional to see something like joy of playing on Ivan's side. He normally played way more conservatively, risking much less, not trying to play direct winners but rather wait for the opponents error. Throughout the last few games Ivan demonstrated his total superiority. He literally steamrolled Muster.
Lendl was so tired that day, I don't know why. It should have been very wet. I think he wanted to make rallies short at the end by his good serve and volley.
actually it is the slowest court you can imagine. this stadium isnt a tennis stadium but a multipurpose. so they created that clay court a week bevore the tournament. now the thing is, a clay needs years to settle good in, best if it can freeze in winter. it get solid underneath and faster. this however is just a pile of fucking sand. you can see when players slide how much sand the pile up. its insane

At 26:15 - Muster got that wrong. The linesman pointed at mark clearly closer to the trams than where Lendl hit it. So, the umpire was also wrong in affirming it... Muster should've asked the spectators.
Lendl is the father of modern tennis, the most complete player by end of 80s. His volleys, supposedly his weakest link are better than Federer/Nadal/Djokovic
Lendl WAS a natural talent - he just proved that conditioning and training can make you WAY better. He vaulted men's tennis to a new level - just like Jimmy and then Mac did with aggression. Sampras followed but was only slightly improved the game re serve. Then the 3 GOATS took us to a whole new level which I believe is the peak that we will never see again.
Lendls knees appeared very stiff and his timing at the net was bad, which become apparent in Wimbledon at the higher pace. He should have stuck to his game there, I think he could have won in 86 but ruined it. He then played very well from the baseline in the beginning, got a break early in the match but then start to approach the net way too often, lost he grip he had versus Becker and got crushed in the end.
@@jimmybrice6360 has to be said that the court was painfully slow too. You can see on some of the closeups when they slide, a large amount of top dressing flies up. That really slows the ball down.

I remember Muster got seriously injured in a car/bike wreck and he was practicing tennis in a wheelchair. Dude was insane.

Lend was my hero growing up...I even played like him...but he morphed into an American and that just unfortunately didn't sit with him.

looking at this match, muster had no oomph to his shots, only his voice. lendl is very calmly just getting the ball back. never being threatened.
