    *I'm always happy to point you in the right direction regarding questions about Adobe Captivate. If you need more than a simple question answered, you can purchase a one-hour one-on-one session with me at **bit.ly/Cp1on1**. If you only use some of that time, that's okay. You can bank any unused time (15-minute increments) for future sessions. For example, if you use 30 minutes, you can use 30 minutes later.*

    Great video as always. Thank you, Paul. Something that recently tripped me up when adding fluid boxes to both Master and Filmstrip was that the fluid boxes in the Filmstrip actually get blown away when you click "Reset Master Slide". This seems like a flaw to me as the fluid boxes are important structural components that should be retained in the Filmstrip version, or at the very least, a warning when you click "Reset Master Slide" to say that any Filmstrip fluid boxes will be deleted.

      I tend to have very few fluid boxes added to master slide fluid boxes. You might have better results if you rely on all master slide fluid boxes. I use both but I'm careful not to reset unless I really screw it up.

      @@CaptivateTeacher Thanks Paul, yes I think I've rather over engineered my master slides and backed myself into a corner. Responsive projcets are very much a new way of working, an interesting challenge to be sure

      Agreed. I only create responsive design online learning when it's absolutely necessary.

      @@CaptivateTeacher Thanks Paul. Unfortunately, my boss (who is not familiar with Captivate) is rather sold on the idea of mobility without having any stats as to who would access courses that way. Additionally, I can think of contract instructional designers we've hired in the past who would struggle desperately with responsive, likely resulting in project delays.
      I was wondering if you could point me to any information as to the limitations of a responsive project. I can Google lots of things about benefits etc, but nothing so far about the things you CANNOT do compared to a standard project.
      In terms of limitations so far, I'm finding that matching in Quizzes doesn't work well, nor do text based slides (sometimes unavoidable for time compressed projects) and also I'm struggling how to lay one object over another (with different timings) in conjunction with fluid boxes. I'm aware that there could be ways of making these things work in a responsive project, but it would be great to see a list of things that cannot/should not be done in a Responsive project so that I know the parameters of what is possible.
      I could then take that back to my boss and say "hey we need to consider a) who will access via mobile, b) future contractor skills and c), here are the things that you can't do well/cant do at all on responsive"

      @@gooseboy73 Everything I have on this is anecdotal because each organization has a different situation. For example, I worked for an organization that asked me to design for responsive design because the company's vice presidents had iPads. So I asked some follow-up questions about the situation. First, besides the eight vice presidents, I wondered who in the list of 1,000 employees have access to the LMS on some type of mobile device. The answer was that just eight vice presidents had access to the LMS through the company Wi-Fi. I explained that, first of all, responsive design takes more time than non-responsive design. My experience is that it takes about 30% longer, but for someone without my experience, it would be more. I also reminded them that responsive design requires a different type of design. e.g. objects cannot overlap, and there cannot be too much on-screen text. I didn't need to explain more. Once they learned that my hours would increase by 30 percent, they were unwilling to have me put in the extra work.

    Paul I have a drop down box that I created in a fluid box. My drop down is grouped together and the top box on my dropdown is not grouped since it displays the selection from the dropdown. The top box shrinks as I change the view from desktop to iPhone, but the drop down doesn't shrink at the same rate as the top box that displays the selection from my dropdown. How can I set the shapes in my fluid box so they all shrink at the same rate?

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  ปีที่แล้ว

      Grouped objects cannot be placed in fluid boxes. It's possible that your dropdown item is actually unlocked from fluid boxes and therefore is just floating in front.

      Yeah the big thing for me was more control over static fluid boxes and resizing of all fluid boxes.

    Not sure if i'm missing it, but is there a way to have objects only show in specific views with fluid boxes or in different places, like you can with break boxes? Like if I have an icon on the left side of screen for desktop, but when it gets to a smaller size it moves the right side of the screen. Or needing to add something specifically to a small screen size, but not needing it for a desktop size?

    • @CaptivateTeacher

      You can mark objects or fluid boxes as optional so that they don't appear when there isn't enough room for them. The parent fluid box will need to be set as squeeze in a row or column to have them drop off when there isn't enough room. You can set the percentage point when that occurs on the top most parent fluid box. Alternatively, you can create navigation to different slides depending on the OS of the device. For example, you can have a next button jump to slide 10 for desktop or slide 11 for Android or iOS. You would need to write an advanced action that checks the value of cpInfoMobileOS. If the value is 0 the user is on a desktop, higher values would be android and iOS.

    Hello, thank you very much for telling us about the improvements of captivate. Actually being able to place the fluid box in an exact place is a great improvement.
    I wanted to ask you if the png or jpg display in the mobile view has been improved (when I use them as icons as an image fill in a way that is going to be a button). Until now I´m having many problems with these formats because they are pixelated or blurry, especially in the mobile version. Until the fluid box, solved it used svg but now, this option has been complicated by not being able to place several objects in the same fluid box (unless it is static).
    Thank you very much for all the videos you do!!

      carmela usoz I don't believe there is any improvement in this area but I've not experienced any problems myself. Fluid boxes are the same but they are easier to work with.

    Thanks for this tutorial! I have a question. I’m trying to place highlight box over a specific portion of an image, as you did here with the world map and the Canadian flag. Can you make a fluid box static if it’s the only fluid box on the slide? I didn’t see the option to do this.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a trick to creating a single static fluid box on a slide. First create two child level fluid boxes and then delete one of them from the Properties Inspector.

    Once again a great video Paul. Can fluid boxes be set up in a slide master series with its child layouts (template). And will the set up be inherited when a new project is launched from the template? If this inheritance does occur, a video on this would be great.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe part of my next video in fluid boxes but the answer is yes. You can have master slide fluid boxes and have child level fluid boxes within slide level.

    Very new here. and using Captivate 2019 Is there a way to delete a fluid box later? I've used the duplicate but there's no delete? In my example I'm using one of the asset slides (objectives-wired) and it has 5 objectives. I only need 4.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the fluid box is from the master slide you cannot delete on the filmstrip. You can head over to the master slide and I recommend making a copy of the master slide and deleting it on the copy. This way you still have the original

    Great video, thanks!! I am a bit confused by the delete Fluid Box option. I have a slide with just fluid boxes and want to change the layout. How do I remove a fluid box? In my case the trash can does not appear in the properties. Thanks for your help.

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Select the fluid box you wish to remove and click the Delete icon. You will need to unlock from fluid box any content presently in that fluid box first.

    • @ronlustig5659
      @ronlustig5659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that even when all elements have been unlocked from the fluid box the delete icon does not appear. Any ideas?

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are there any child fluid boxes within that fluid box? In the end you may have to rebuild that slide. I always suggest that you plan your design before you start to develop with fluid boxes.

    • @ronlustig5659
      @ronlustig5659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. I've got a fluid box for a row with two children inside. I thought I was able to delete the parent on another slide with this configuration. Planning the design is useful but I started with a template and used slides formatted already. I'm trying to adjust the display for specific purpose.

    • @ronlustig5659
      @ronlustig5659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I have the answer... In Master Slide view I can select each fluid box and see the Delete icon. It looks like when you use Fluid Boxes on the master then it overrides the capability on the filmstrip. You're free to resize and change characteristics but you can't remove a Fluid Box. Does this make sense?

    Hello, how can i put an image in a static fluid box where the size of the image starts to shrink when the border of the static fluid box hits the border of the image and not before?
    at the moment the image, whichs width is smaler then the one of the fluid box, starts to shrink as soon as the fluid box starts to shrink.
    thank you

    • @CaptivateTeacher
      @CaptivateTeacher  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regular fluid boxes do not support overlapping objects, nor do they support additional objects within a multi-state object. To solve these two problems, Adobe created the static fluid box. Unfortunately, static fluid boxes force a fixed aspect ratio, something that regular fluid boxes don't have to deal with. The best advice I can give you is to place the primary background object into a regular fluid box before you place other objects. Convert the fluid box into a static fluid box and then add your additional overlay objects or additional multi-state objects. Keep in mind because of the fixed aspect ratio there will be this unusable space created on smaller screen sizes that are unavoidable.

  • @nickdrummer3992
    @nickdrummer3992 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If we need to keep the box with the images on mobile state (not optional), the overlapping image doesn't follow the fluid box! Instead it stays where it was at the beginning! Something I'm doing wrong??

      There are several solutions to this problem but the easiest is to probably use breakpoint design instead of fluid boxes if you wish to have an entirely different layout for different devices.

      1) Create a new responsive project
      2) Click on Project dropdown menu
      3) Click Switch to Breakpoint Mode
