So glad you found it helpful! Most doctors care a lot and are really at their job but nutrition science just it’s a focus at med school. Many doctors only receive ONE nutrition class total. And medicine in general has a focus on fixing health problems rather than prevention. I encourage you to have this discussion with your health care provider. If enough folks ask good probing questions it will encourage doctors to dig deeper into prenatal nutrition. (And I should also mention that typically there is a 10 to 20 year delay between emerging research, and having enough research build up to change practices and general recommendations- that’s another reason why)

Hi Darlene! This is a great question!! :) Yes. Iodine is very important in pregnancy - especially for fetal brain development - because iodine supports your production of the maternal thyroid hormones which are needed for baby's brain and nervous system development. As adults we generally need about 150mcg/day but during pregnancy that amount increases to 220-250mcg/day (World Health Organization recommendation). This need for iodine (along with choline, EPA and DHA) is why I recommend eating eggs, dairy and seafood/fish during pregnancy. 1 egg contains around 24mcg of iodoine 1 cup of milk contains around 56 mcg of iodine. 3 oz of cod has about 99 mcg. Half a teaspoon of iodized salt contains around 150 mcg. Interestingly sea salt and himalayan salt typically contain little to no iodine compared to iodized salt. Many prenatal vitamins contain iodine - but not all - so it's good to check the label. Is this helpful?
Great question! I think it would depend on the rest of your diet. For most North Americans their diets have way more omegas 6 and 9s in it already - so it isn’t necessary to supplement those ones.
I ate a lot of liver chicken and goat but I recently learned its not really good for pregnant women because of vit A. I need to increase my hemoglobin.
Yup! A small amount of liver is great for iron and choline. But you are correct too much liver can result an overdose of vitamin A. If you are looking for alternative sources of iron. Here are some of my top picks. And if you chose any plant iron - be sure to pair it with vitamin C (like citrus or bell peppers) to increase absorption. 1. Lean Beef - High in heme iron, which is easily absorbed. 2. Chicken and Turkey - Great sources of heme iron and easy to incorporate into meals. 3. Spinach - Packed with non-heme iron and also high in folate. 4. Lentils - A plant-based iron source that’s rich in fiber and protein. 5. Beans (Kidney, Black, and White) - Excellent plant-based sources of iron and other nutrients. 6. Fortified Cereals - Many are enriched with iron and ideal for breakfast. 7. Pumpkin Seeds - Perfect as a snack, providing both iron and magnesium. 8. Quinoa - A complete protein that’s also high in iron. 9. Tofu - A versatile iron-rich option, especially in vegetarian diets. 10. Dark Chocolate (70%+ cocoa) - A tasty treat with a good amount of iron.
Do you have any recommendations for how to get enough omega 3 when one is allergic to fish? Im really allergic and live in a country where it's really expensive and hard to find avocados this time of year
Joanna - are you also allergic to shellfish? That’s another great source of Omega 3s. What about an omega 3 oil from fish supplements would that trigger an allergic reaction for you? DHA is also found meat and eggs. The best choices are grass-feed meat, and pasture-raised eggs. As for the avocados- it’s ok to just wait until they are in season again and instead for right now focus on produce that is in season.
Unfortunately, I'm allergic to both seafood and fish. And I've been on an lacto-ovo vegetarian diet for the past 8 years. I'm willing to eat meat if it's necessary for my pregnancy but would prefer to find some other option, like the pasture-rasied eggs you mentioned. Thank you so much for the quick reply! 🙏
I haven’t looked that those two prenatal supplements in depth. However if you can focus on getting most of your nutrients from real food - that’s best.
Thanks for the excellent question!! Love it. Here's the deal with salmon roe. Pros: It's a great source of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA), protein, and vitamins like B12 and D. Cons: Like other raw or undercooked seafood, it can sometimes carry harmful bacteria, like Listeria, which is dangerous. Listeria is one of the few infections that can cross the placenta and harm baby. BUT there is more to the listeria story - I go deep into listeria in this video on Kombucha. Watch it if you want to understand more and make an informed decision about salmon roe. th-cam.com/video/uS6V_XqZlYs/w-d-xo.html
I eat sardine several times a week with all my pregnancies. I'm 21 weeks on my 3rd pregnancy eating sardines like crazy again. I have very healthy kids .
Oh no! That’s so hard. Those food aversions and cravings are a real thing. If you can - just focus on adding in real food wherever possible. Inside my bye-bye morning sickness program I teach my students to get into the habit of ‘dreaming up’ their next meal - so they use their intuition and instincts to guide them to the foods that they need and that their body will tolerate. Maybe that strategy might be helpful for you too.
Even short moments - a minute or two of intentional rest will help. Often if you are on the lookout for these moments - you’ll find them - in most jobs! For example - I was talking with a pregnancy grade 1 teacher - and she told me that she had to make a really conscious decision to rest at recess. Instead of running around and getting stuff done. In fact she found if she made herself a cup of herbal tea - it helped her sit and rest - no phones - during recess. Another mama told me that she just made a point for taking an extra 2 minutes in the bathroom. She would practice calming breathes, rub her belly and talk to her baby. Hopefully these idea help you find rest time in your day. And if your job really won’t allow it - then give yourself some well deserved couch time when you get home.
Soooo what I understand from 'science' is that it would be a mom's fault why their children aren't smart? Completely against these sort of titles even though you try to help please don't make those new momas confused with this video. There are a lot of studies that prove that the happening of a child is also not completely in our hands. Some kids develop the way it's meant to be and even though we eat, sport and do our very best. Dear moms, just do the best to keep a healthy body and mind for yourself as first and then baby will definitely profit from what you do. Ps, keep away from drugs, alcohol and smoking though. Much peace and love ☘️
Blame is a dangerous game and generally doesn’t serve us well. However ignoring your power to influence your baby brain development is lost opportunity. We can support our kids right from the beginning of their lives including their time in utero. That is what this video is about. Meta7lover - please actually watch the entire video before you comment.
This is an EXCELLENT question! :) Cod liver oil contains beneficial omega-3s (DHA and EPA) that support the baby’s brain development, but you need to be cautious because it also has high levels of vitamin A. While omega-3s are great for helping your baby’s cognitive development and possibly even extending your pregnancy a bit to avoid preterm labor, too much vitamin A can be harmful during pregnancy. Experts generally recommend that pregnant women get around 200-300 mg of DHA daily, but cod liver oil dosage needs to stay low to avoid excess vitamin A (retinol)-typically about 1 teaspoon a day max. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend that pregnant women limit their vitamin A intake from supplements to 3,000 IU per day to avoid toxicity. For this one, it's a good idea to check with your healthcare provider to make sure you're getting the right balance for both you and your baby! I hope that helps!!
Hi Caroline! Another great question! Thanks for asking. Here's the deal with avocado oil. Its Omega profile is low in Omega 6s (only 10-15%). It has a high smoke point - making it very good for cooking. It also has Vitamin E, carotenoids, and lutein - so some good antioxidants. It is NOT a good source of Omega 3s - with a very small amount of Omega 3s. Mostly it's high in Oleic acid - that's a monounsaturated Omega 9 fatty acid (65-70% of the fats in avocado oils are Omega 9) Omega 9s are helpful in pregnancy, particularly for heart health and anti-inflammatory properties but they aren't as crucial as omega 3s which directly impact fetal brain development. Does that help?
Always best to choose organic or homegrown berries if possible. We collect a lot of raspberries, Saskatoon berries and blueberries each summer. That helps keep costs low and then there are no pesticides. But I am also aware that not everyone has the space or time to grow their own berries and berries are expensive and organic ones even more so! If you can’t afford organic - then washing your berries will eliminate some of the issue. And like many things it’s a question of risk vs benefits. And each person needs to evaluate that on their own. For me personally the health benefits of berries outweigh the risk of pesticides. What about for you?
Yes kindness and being a good human is so important. As moms, I think most of us just want to give our babies all the love and support we can. And we support their bodies optimally / that leads to optimal brain development.
That is nurture and nature. So you teach them right from wrong. Its simple but having intelligence and being alert to understand things is important too
Organ meats and especially liver aren't recommended because they have too much vitamin A, which can lead to serious developmental issues in fetuses. Would've liked to hear other, safe sources of choline. Otherwise liked the video, thanks.
Like many things in our diet - it’s about the right amounts. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient in pregnancy - for fetal growth, immune function and even eye development. The question is about how much!! Avoiding liver completely is not better. Best is eating it in the correct amounts. If you have one small slice of liver - about 30 gram serving - that would be about 2200-2700 mcg of Retinol (vitamin A) well below the recommended daily upper limit of 3000. But that’s not the end of the story. That upper limit is based on old studies which used high doses of SYNTHETIC Vitamin A. The emerging research is telling a different story. Naturally occurring vitamin A does not exert this toxicity- especially when vitamin A is paired with Vitamin D and vitamin K2 - two key nutrients that are also present in liver. It’s another great example of how our bodies do so much better with whole foods - rather than synthetic supplements. I encourage you to dig a little deeper on this one!! And let me know if you want to see the studies for yourself. I would love to help you make an informed decision on this!!
Yeah and prossed substitutes in grains. But it's good to know of the nutrients it's down to us to make the choice where we source from. Algea for omega
Never did see a reply , I’m 27 weeks. Is it too late to hope I haven’t had too much vegetable oil ? I’m vegetarian and taking fish oil. But I wasn’t aware how bad vegetable oil and avacado oil was.
Rachel - please be gentle with yourself. We are all trying to do our best with the knowledge and resources that we have. As we improve those, we are able to do better. That's pretty true in most areas of life. You are already doing a good job mothering this little one! The fact that you watched the video, then took the time to think about how it implies to your life and comment - that's proof already. So all that to say - it's not to late! As for your question about the supplements for the fish oil. Here's the two options that I like. Viva Naturals Antarctic Krill Oil: amzn.to/3yfuvfz Viva Naturals Omega 3 Fish Oil: amzn.to/4cWyUmQ
It’s never too late! You can use Ghee for cooking or coconut oil. Frankly, if you use olive oil for cooking it’s still going to be better than a vegetable oil. Also, if you eat salads, then walnut oil or high quality olive oil is fantastic. Look into eating just a bit of macadamia and Pili nuts, assuming you can eat nuts. Best of luck!
Nutrition Made Simple made a video about canola oil and contrary to popular belief, it actually improved longevity compared to saturated fat like butter. Olive oil also improved longevity. So I wouldn’t beat yourself up. I used to be strictly against seed oils and I was carnivore. Now I eat a Mediterranean diet with lots of fish like the blue zones and I feel healthier than ever. I mainly use olive oil, not saturated fat, but I don’t beat myself up if I have a little sunflower or canola oil that was in my hummus I bought.
Hi Eden! As a vegan, it’s still possible to get pretty much everything you need but it’s harder and you’ll need to be more conscious and intentional with your food choices. If you would consider adding in dairy and eggs at least during pregnancy - that would make it much easier for your body to get all the nutrients you need. And I would strongly encourage you to just dig deep into knowledge about prenatal nutrition so that if you decide that staying vegan is important to you - you can find ways to maximize your nutrition. If you can please check out the book listed in the description called Real Food for Pregnancy.
Plant sourced Omega 3s are great but our bodies function best with both animal and plant sources. Krill oil is a good alternative animal source if you want to avoid fish.
Yikes. Advising people to only trust doctors is kinda silly when you consider many Doctors advise women to follow FDA nutritional guidelines which have not been developed through scientific evidence by years of studies-now that’s scary! We live in a world where information is vast and available to all. So all people with internet access should do research, and get to know their own bodies and not make doctors the only responsible party in their health. It’s not wise to only trust the general consensus. Look at cigarettes… drs used to call them healthy! New science and research will emerge and hopefully soon change the way Americans see nutrition/food.

How about cod liver oil?
This is an EXCELLENT question! :)
Cod liver oil contains beneficial omega-3s (DHA and EPA) that support the baby’s brain development, but you need to be cautious because it also has high levels of vitamin A.
Stop using flouride. Drink bone broth. Eat grassfed ghee....
What about avocado oil?
Hi Caroline! Another great question! Thanks for asking.
Here's the deal with avocado oil.
Its Omega profile is low in Omega 6s (only 10-15%). It has a high smoke point - making it very good for cooking. It also has Vitamin E, carotenoids, and lutein - so some good antioxidants.
It is NOT a good source of Omega 3s - with a very small amount of Omega 3s.
Mostly it's high in Oleic acid - that's a monounsaturated Omega 9 fatty acid (65-70% of the fats in avocado oils are Omega 9)
Omega 9s are helpful in pregnancy, particularly for heart health and anti-inflammatory properties but they aren't as crucial as omega 3s which directly impact fetal brain development.
Does that help?
I'm so sorry, but I just can't watch past the "venchtable oils" bit.
Berries are very high in pesticides
Always best to choose organic or homegrown berries if possible. We collect a lot of raspberries, Saskatoon berries and blueberries each summer. That helps keep costs low and then there are no pesticides.
But I am also aware that not everyone has the space or time to grow their own berries and berries are expensive and organic ones even more so! If you can’t afford organic - then washing your berries will eliminate some of the issue. And like many things it’s a question of risk vs benefits. And each person needs to evaluate that on their own. For me personally the health benefits of berries outweigh the risk of pesticides. What about for you?
All of our food is poisoned. Shop at farmers markets and local organic. Meat has all kinds of hormones and antibiotics and sometimes glue in it.
Can we eat raw baby spinach in first trimester?
Are you worried about food bore illness?
I dont want my baby to become smarter but i want it to become a good human being. Smartness and intelligence will follow automatically.

What about compressed organic rapeseed oil
Rapeseed oil is just another older name for Canola oil. It’s not ideal.
That is one of the MOST annoying voices and tones I've ever heard
Oh 😊dear the cattle get all the nutrients grass!!!!
Viva Naturals Antarctic Krill Oil: amzn.to/3yfuvfz
Viva Naturals Omega 3 Fish Oil: amzn.to/4cWyUmQ
It’s never too late! You can use Ghee for cooking or coconut oil. Frankly, if you use olive oil for cooking it’s still going to be better than a vegetable oil. Also, if you eat salads, then walnut oil or high quality olive oil is fantastic. Look into eating just a bit of macadamia and Pili nuts, assuming you can eat nuts. Best of luck!
If you are a “vegetarian” taking fish oil, you are indeed not a vegetarian.
5:41 but I'm vegan
@Birth-Bliss thank you so much Birth Bliss I will. I've eaten eggs a few times.
Algea amd seaweed is good for omega 3 I wouldn't dream of touching any fish from our toxic planet.
Plant sourced Omega 3s are great but our bodies function best with both animal and plant sources. Krill oil is a good alternative animal source if you want to avoid fish.
algeas and fish are in the same water? also depending on where you live/buy the algeas have a very high salt level.
Y’all, please keep in mind this woman is not a medical professional. Check out some others from actual doctors and medical professionals.
Hey Cary! Was there a piece of research that I presented that you disagreed with?
@@Birth-BlissI don't see anything wrong in your video. Some people try to find fault in everything. Keep up the good work ❤
Doctors don’t study nutrition, they don’t study jabs as well.
@@ShannonCLCAthat’s the great irony- this commenter telling people to go to doctors for topics in which doctors have virtually No training 🙄
