Kung Fu Hustle is a rare type of movie. It takes advantage of all the cheesy kung fu stuff in movies but does it in a way that never really takes itself seriously. It's hard to criticize the movie when its intentionally silly and stylized to be that way. In some ways it's like a live action anime that's actually good which itself isn't common.
There’s a movie where he falls in love with a wealthy girl and doesn’t know she has a retarded twin. That’s one of my favorite movies but I have no idea the name of it.
It is rare for me to actually laugh at the cinema, so often it just falls flat but Chow's work in Kung Fu Hustle genuinely cracks me up every time. I can't really say that for any other film.
I remember when this movie premiered in mainland China in 2004, it was winter. My girlfriend (now wife) and I were in university, we wanted to find a place to make out, so we randomly bought 2 tickets, didn't noticed it's a new movie called Kung Fu Hustle from Stephen Chow. Since it was daytime, the entire auditorium which could accommodate several hundred people, had only a few viewers besides the two of us, it should be a great place for young couple to make out and kill some time. Guess what, in the end, we didn't make out at all, instead we watched the entire movie without a blink, and laughed and cried from beginning to end. What a memory!
The writing for this film is amazing. You don't expect her to be a highly skilled martial artists. But she is. When you hear her shout here, you'll think she's just loud. But no. She's actually one and her loud voice is one of her martial arts.
0:39 omg this whole knife sequence keeps me in tears every rewatch 😭😭. And the almost authentic pain Chow displays when he whimpers "don't" 😂😂. So many classic scenes in this classic film.
The way his eyes just widen, and he calmly walks back after the knife goes into his shoulder is hilarious. I think it seems a little authentic because people do act strange after going into shock and a knife to the shoulder can do just that.
In my 37 years of watching funny movies this movie by far the serve the Oscar Award. I was in a hospital while watching this movie and man this movie heal me ❤
The genius of the comedy cannot be undercut because it all starts off from throwing knives. You get blindsided by a lot of the jokes, but then it jumps immediately to the chase scene where the knives STILL play a part.
I like how this scene actually forshadows him being really powerful, with him taking severe injuries and just be annoyed by it, and being able to outrun the Landlady.
@@TrueLegateDamar at first you just excuse it as this movie's logic, but then it becomes a call-back when his friend literally asks about it after the chase scene, then you start to wonder
Hell, he being able to compete with landlady speed was also a foreshadowing. People think that this whole chasing sequences was just for comedic effect but turns out they really do run very fast. There's also one with the beast where he got punched right on his face, yet he was still alive enough to "tap" him one more time, got punched even more until the ground caved in and yet still alive, where in next scene it was shown just one slap from the beast can easily kill ordinary man. Those foreshadowings are really great.

The fact that he didn't die after bitten by 2 cobras at his lips kinda foreshadows that he has super strength.

It's the knife stabs & cobra bites that awakened his hidden strength, that came from a mysterious book in the earlier scene.
