All, I know I'm going to get blasted with this...but please keep in mind. I HAVE NOT SEEN IN SEARCH OF DARKNESS YET. I really really want to though. What are your favorite HORROR DOCS? Go!
so funny, i watched the whole video, and then went straight to comments, lo and behold , you already knew what i was about to type...yes in search of Darkness is pretty much the definitive doc.. if you like 80s action movies, oliver harper also has one called "in search of the last action heroes".
but one of my favorites is in the Ultimate Edition of Dawn of The Dead ...its a 4 disc set, with US theatrical version, ext. version and European Version and a 4th disc has like 4 different docs on it..., plus a comic book and map of the mall used in the movie
I wasn’t much of a fan of In Search of Darkness. To me it did not reveal anything we haven’t heard before which is y I was disappointed with it. But my question for u Lee is have u seen Unearthed and Untold - the path to Pet Sematary? Was curious what u thought of that horror doc.
Kane is AMAZING I’ve met him & spoke to him at length a few times & he ALWAYS makes u feel so comfortable & like you are truly just a friend shooting the shit & joking around but also his little anecdotes... I could talk to him for hours & that man has a heart of gold. Best Jason, best stunt man, best man period. His book is even more arms wide open chalk full of insights & experiences & made me adore & admire him even more!
I really love Crystal Lake Memories as well, and there’s another one called “His Name was Jason” that Tom Savini narrates which is also good. I met Kane Hodder once at a horror convention and he was a great person and very friendly.
Hey Lee. Really enjoyed this top 10. I'm a big fan of horror doc's too. I have that 25 years of terror disc too and is one of my favorites. I actually really enjoyed the Michael lives one as well. Even though I'm not a big fan of Zombie's Halloween, I found it very interesting to see all the behind the scenes footage.
I love Universal Horror, based on the universal classics of the 30s and 40s. Also, non-franchise specific documentaries such as Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film and The American Nightmare are great docs.
@Drumdums Great list! One of my favorites of yours. I remember my first horror documentary I saw as a kid was TERROR IN THE AISLES. I have to revisit it soon to see how it holds up with newer ones like on your list but I loved it growing up.
I wasn't the biggest fan of Rob Zombie's Halloween films but I agree that the documentary was AWESOME!... I think it would be number one for me (as a wannabe filmmaker especially) !!!! It was a great mix of interviews and more of the filmmaking process...
I watched that whole 7 hour Crystal Lake Memories documentary in one sitting. I remember drinking so much coffee, during it, that it's a wonder I didn't overdose on caffeine. Lol
Gotta admit, I'm jealous af over that Halloween box set! Cool to hear what a good guy Kane Hodder is. Gotta watch that doc. Maybe I'll double feature his and Mark Patton's this weekend.
Great list. I recommend Beware The Moon the story of American werewolf in London. A very indepth documentary it covers everything to do with the film. Very interesting and well worth a watch.
New subscriber here. This was wonderful! I love behind the scenes documentaries and there are several on this list that I haven't yet seen! Thank you for the recommendations!
I’d even recommend you go see The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait. Kind of slow in the beginning but really good if you’re a huge Leatherface fan.
Great list lee. I've actually watched 50% of these documentaries in the last month because of the lockdown, but I can't get enough of them their a great watch. One I will recommend is the Exorcist documentary, it was a brilliant insight
I am a documentary guy too. I have watched 25 Years of Terror and Crystal Lake Memories countless times. To Hell and Back is also outstanding. And, you're right. That Halloween box set is amazing.Great video, Brother. Stay safe.
Crystal Lake Memories is always a kick. But as you said Lee, it's all stuff we've heard before. Never Sleep Again is a real treat, Clu Gulager really cracks me up in that.
Brilliant video Drumdums, I really enjoyed it! If you haven't seen these ones yet then here are some recommendations of awesome documentaries: * More Brains! A Return to the Living Dead The ultimate documentary of the Return of the Living Dead series. * You're So Cool, Brewster! The Story of Fright Night The ultimate documentary of the Fright Night series. * Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (Partially related) By far one of the best documentaries that covers the whole history of Cannon Films with talks about Horror films that they made, such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Hospital Massacre (aka X-Ray), Lifeforce, New Year's Evil, and Schizoid.
Yes I've seen all 3 of those....all are top notch (I forgot to add them). I wouldn't consider the Canon films one a horror one, even though there are a few horror titles in there. But god I love that doc.
This is a pretty good list. Thank you.. My favorite horror documentaries are Never Sleep Again,, Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film and Nightmares in Red, White and Blue.
The best horror docs I've ever seen are In Search of Darkness and the making-of the '98 Psycho remake. Fascinating ! Great video, you are my reference for all things horror now :)
You might like the documentary “Lost Soul” about the making of the Island of De Moreau movie from 1996. I’ve never seen the movie in full, but the madness surrounding the filming of the movie and the director was fascinating to watch. I think it’s steaming on Amazon Prime and Shudder. I believe New Line’s Rob Shaye makes an appearance lol
Great list! TCM has a lesser known doc prior to The Shocking Truth called The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: A Family Portrait. It is stories of the production as told by Gunnar Hansen, Ed Neal, and Jim Siedow. The audio and video quality are a bit dicey but it offers some different takes on the production. Ed Neal is especially personally insightful and it's the most I've ever seen Jim Siedow contribute to a doc.
One i really liked was 'The Curse of The Omen' discussing all the weird events that went on behind the scenes, including near death experiences of the lead actors and main members of the crew.
I wanna say the initial blu-ray release for The Evil Dead had a bonus DVD with that documentary. Bluray.com says it was a Best Buy exclusive but I remember getting mine at Wal-Mart.
Awesome, that’s a great idea for a video! I love a good horror documentary, I backed In Search of Darkness fex, & I love making of’s & BTS stuff. I have seen about half of the ones you mentioned, so I have to check some of the other ones out. Very cool video!
I am surprised Never Sleep Again: A Elm Street Legacy is not further up the list. It's probably my favourite horror doc. The story behind the first movie is mind- blowing and inspiring. Haven't seen many of the other horror docs you mentioned, i will add them to the list to check out. They sound really interesting. Great Video Lee.
In my limited edition Midnight Classics 3 DVD boxset there's even deleted scenes from 'The Shocking Truth'. I love Midnight Classics, they publish classic titles with a boatload of extras.
Great vid! I have nearly all of these except LHOTL. I've never been able to bring myself to collect or repeat view films that depict rape. Just a mental thing for me.
Oh I agree Barry. Any movie that deals with rape is a tough watch for me too, and I have to prepare myself for them. The docs on them on the other hand are really great though.
Funny coincidence: I have had the Kane Hodder and Mark Patton documentaries on the way from Amazon for like a week now. I have that Halloween blu-ray set as well. It is one of the best horror blu-Ray sets (Universal Monster complete collection being another great one). Shout, I think, is working on one for Friday the 13th.
Yes! Love behind the scenes docos! Have you thought about doing a top ten groundbreaking horror movies. Like scream was groundbreaking in restarting the slasher genre in the 90s etc
Excellent list. My favorite horror documentary will always be "More Brains: A Return to the Living Dead." It's a fantastic, in-depth look at the making of Return of the Living Dead, all the legal troubles it went through, not to mention all the wild behind-the-scenes stories they share. It may be two hours long, but it never feels like two hours to me due to its great pacing.
I definitely agree with you Lee that Last House On The Left is the best 'making of'. It makes you appreciate the film, and how these guys with almost no experience improvised to make something really special and unique. Also you can see what a nice guy Wes Craven was. I think all his dark stuff ended up in the movie! The two that I would have also put in are '30 Days in Hell' the making of The Devil's Rejects', and 'More Brains' The Return or the Living Dead. More Brains has moments that are almost as funny as the movie itself. As for 30 Days in Hell...Rob Zombie needs to put together a making of documentary for all his releases. The two that he's done are both fantastic.
Thank you. I love your channel. You are one of the people that inspired me to get my channel going. You should come check us out if you ever find the time. We focus on horror and science fiction. Keep up the great work.
Fantastic video. This was a pretty cool list. I recently just watched the making of nightbreed documentary. Really good stuff. I think that they should update the Halloween documentary after Halloween ends is released. A cool list idea I thought of would be top 10 PG horror movies. Really great job here and I am loving the VHS background.
Hey! Really enjoyed this episode. There is one you should check out called The American Nightmare. Its superb. Mostly dealing with Hooper, Carpenter, Craven Cronenberg etc. It's all about the 70s horror movie and their impact. Some really great interviews and how the thought process of the directors was mirroring society at that time. Another one is Terror in the Aisles featuring Donald Plesence - maybe you have seen it though being a big Halloween fan. Keep up the good work!
Fantastic top 10 Lee, the Evil dead doc is on TH-cam so will give that a watch, some I would like to mention, your so cool Brewster the making of Fright night is 146 mins long and is on the UK region free Blu-ray, More Brains is about the making of Return of the living dead and that's on the UK Blu-ray also, last one I can think of is Terror in the aisles which is on the US Halloween 2 Blu-ray, thanks Lee.
Thanks for the recommendations, Drums! Especially the way you zero in on the best of all the Halloween doc's! I've got a few suggestions not on your list, stand-alone's instead of franchises. OK, I'm sure you've seen/own Unbreakable which has an excellent dual disc documentary! The same goes for Near Dark! Killer Kool stuff on that one! Also, the original Carrie (still waiting on that review HaHaHa!) has an awesome 2-part documentary centering around DePalma's casting & creation of that movie. The Fog & Prom Night also have pretty decent 30min doc's but even better commentaries (in which Carpenter's memory of each location shot during the opening scenes of the town to the grand finale is brilliant!), and Prom Night's director Paul Lynch is hilarious in his commentary where he mistakenly confuses two of the pivotal characters in that movie's opening scene with the kids, but he talks about how co-writer Robert Guza Jr. wrote that back story based on a real-life tragedy that haunted a group of kids years later and he gushes over JLC's major contribution to the film's success!). These are all gems in their own way but you'll really love Near Dark! It's an older version Anchor Bay DVD but still packs a mean punch!
About the evil dead documentary: It's available on the UK "Evil Dead Trilogy" blu ray release. A little cheaper if you have a region free/b blu ray player haha
I need to watch that Last House doc one day!! Going to pieces is a great slasher doc and i'm not sure we could call Island of Dr. Moreau (1996) a straight up horror but Lost Soul: The doom Journey of Richard Stanley is a great retelling of what went wrong on the set and in production.
I'm so glad to have that Halloween box set, as well as 25 Years of Terror. My Alien Anthology Blu-ray set, for your amusement, is a black box wrapped in a protruding silver face-hugger. Beware the Moon for An American Werewolf in London made me all the happier that I bought the Blu-ray, and I find it just as enthralling to watch as the film itself. It helps that they're roughly the same length as each other. The Dead Walk for Dawn of the Dead is fascinating not only for the actors' experiences and Romero's vision, but the trouble Tom Savini went through to design the zombie effects and appearances. I definitely pity the guy who had permanent ear damage from the screwdriver effect. And even though it's a shorter 45 minute featurette, I always have time for The Making of Jaws 2. It goes fairly in depth and gives a balanced insight on the difficulties behind the scenes. A pity Roy Scheider chose not to appear but I can understand why.
I've honestly seen very few horror documentries but you sure have persuaded me to really get stuck into them. Been meaning to watch that Crystal Lake Memories Doc though just been a bit slow in doing so.
@@DrumdumsOfficial Yeah I know I will. I have seen the 'In Search Of Darkness' documentary and it definitely is a colossal collaboration and worthwhile to watch especially if you're new to the world of horror. For me personally, it's more of a refresher as a lot of the accounts and history they speak about, is things I'm already educated on.
I definitely need to check out Scream Queen. That Halloween boxed set is one of my prized possessions, too. A couple docs worth check out. Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary. It used to be on Amazon Prime, very interesting. Also enjoy Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film. Great decades spanning doc on all things horror. And lastly Room 237. It's bonkers, but so enjoyable! As much as I love horror docs, I think I'm almost a bigger fan of listening to commentaries. One of my favorite commentaries is Carpenter & Keith Gordon talking Christine!
Beth S. Oh yes room 237 is outstanding and gets pretty crazy with the conspiracies. I forgot to mention that one bath! Terror in the Aisles is also a good one that spans the entire genre.
Great choices, Lee. I have SO much nostalgia for that 2006 Halloween: 25 Years of Terror dvd (I remember it came out around the same time as those DiviMax H4 & 5 DVDs). Not sure if you’re a fan of the super cheesy 1995 movie “MOSQUITO” but the Synapse Blu-ray has a documentary called “Bugging Out!” that runs like an hour and a half and it’s TERRIFIC. I’d also recommend the documentary “It Runs In The Family” on Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. One thing I’ll say- I was VERY underwhelmed by the much hyped “The Shark is Still Working” doc on the JAWS blu and would recommend the old doc that was ported from the VHS that you mentioned (which was extended by about 20 minutes) which goes into much greater detail about the making of the film- just my opinion 😎
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for calling it "Last House on the Left" (no "the!"). It shows you're "in the know" & are hip, & don't call it "The Last House on the Left," which other TH-camrs & new editors at horror mags are doing. OMG, it's like nails scraping down a chalkboard...! Thank you again! /Glenn Allen
My Top 5 Horror Doc are. 1. Never Sleep Again Doc. 2. 30 Days In Hell Doc. 3. Crystal Lake Memories Doc. 4. Shudder Cursed Film's Doc. 5. IT Chapter 2 (2019) Doc.
Another great idea for docs is to do a series of franchise specific videos: The Evolution of Friday the 13th Documentaries: 1. Jason X DVD - The Many Lives of Jason Voorhees 2. From Crystal Lake to Manhattan: the Ultimate Edition DVD Collection - Crystal Lake Chronicles - Secrets Galore Behind the Gore - Crystal Lake Victims Tell All 3. Friday 1-8 Deluxe Editions - individual BTS Docs for each film 4. His Name Was Jason 5. Crystal Lake Memories
im not huge on documentaries, but once in a while, maybe once a year ill see something interesting.Im slightly surprised by your number 1 though.Thought it would have been one of the big 3. Thanks for another informative video!!
@@DrumdumsOfficial yeah something about older horror. gritty gives them atmosphere and more feeling "for lack of better words"..Keep pushing out the videos, ill keep watching.Stay safe
Lee, I'm a HUGE horror soundtrack and horror score fan, and would LOVEEEEE to see a Top 10 of this subject done sometime done in the near future!!!! :D
Entertainment Wizard It’s on the Halloween 35th anniversary disc. It Chronicles Jamie Lee Curtis doing her one and only Halloween convention for charity. Really fun watch.
I recommend you check "Bait" It's One of the best shark movies the full movie is on tubi tube for free just download the app the movie was released in 2012 but it's a great one!
There's one for silence of the Lambs called inside the labyrinth that offers a great in depth look of the film and the cast. There's also one for scream but I dont remember the name of it
I saw the documentary on The Thing(1982) after I bought the Scream Factory steelbook BluRay of The Thing(1982) with the lithograph I always believed that Rob Bottin worked on RoboCop Se7en and Fight Club
I sent you a message on Facebook but did you know at the beginning of Halloween 25 years of terror there is footage of a young Michael with his family that was supposed to be in Halloween Resurrection or H20 I can't remember which one but was cut from the film. I also love the somewhat new documentary of Halloween 2 and Halloween 3 I think that is on the box set, if not it's on the shout factory releases of 2 and 3. I also like "Blood is thicker than Water" that's the documentary of 4,5, and 6 I believe.
Whilst not documentaries it was enlightening hearing audio commentary on Halloween 4 and 5 from Danielle Harris. On 4 she was accompanied by Ellie Cornell, on 5 by the director and the actor who played Billy.
Top 10 horror anthologies would be a good one, there’s plenty of those out there. I’ve been on a binge watching ones I haven’t seen. Black Sabbath from Mario Bava is a great one.
Hey Lee, great idea for a video and awesome job on the list. There is one horror documentary that I'm VERY surprised that wasn't on your list. Have you seen 'GOING TO PIECES: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE SLASHER FILM'?? If not, you DEFINITELY need to check that bad boy out. It came out in 2006, and has interviews with EVERYONE, from Tom Savini to Wes Craven to Stan Winston and John Carpenter. I can't recommend it enough if you've never seen it. You would absolutely love it. Let me know if you've seen it, and if so, what you thought about it. Thanks man and keep up the great work.

Doc of the dead and going to pieces:the rise and fall of the slasher film are my favorites

In search of darkness is a masterwork. I preordered it and got all of the goodies. A true behemoth of horror goodness. Can’t wait for you to see it.

The Moth 7 Yeah I completely forgot about that one. I always forget about a few.
@@DrumdumsOfficial That's ok, just wondering where it was
I literally own everything on this list. Lee has fantastic taste.
Schlockbuster Video Awesome...and thank you!
Shake N bake Yes the Nightbreed documentary is a great one.
I’ve heard great things about that documentary actually. I will definitely check it out. Thank you!
Can't believe you didn't include MORE BRAINS! The return of the living dead documentary. One of the best. 2hrs of goodness.
J.G. Wentworth I can’t believe it either. That’s a great one. And Room 237.
Gotta check that out. Only recently saw Part 1, but part 2 is one of my favorite movies ever. 3rd was cool, but I haven't seen the last 2.
@@willE84 It's great. The definitive making of for the first movie.
Thank you brother!
Awesome thank you for all the great recommendations Chase!
Good reviews got my interest on a few of these
About the evil dead documentary: It's available on the UK "Evil Dead Trilogy" blu ray release.
Norton McD Awesome man. You will get addicted. I promise.
I grew up watching that Jaws doc on VHS!
Me too man!
Awesome Lee
Are a few of your top 10 docus here on youtube? :)
Love also documentaries...I watched crystal lake memories in one session so good it is
I was gonna send you that H25 comic awhile back until I saw u already had it
I definitely need to check out Scream Queen.
I said yeah I watches interview and it was very entertaining and he really is a big fan
I was trying to figure out which horror doc tonite thankfully I remembered this video!
Awesome!
That's was cool selection
I watched Never Sleep Again over and over again. Its probably because it's my favorite franchise.
It's a great doc!
Here for you Glenn!
Nice video! I really love your collection
Mauricio Lopez Thank you!
My Top 5 Horror Doc are.
1. Never Sleep Again Doc.
2. 30 Days In Hell Doc.
3. Crystal Lake Memories Doc.
4. Shudder Cursed Film's Doc.
5. IT Chapter 2 (2019) Doc.
30 Days in Hell is great.
I love this channel !
Adam Zargouni Thank you Adam!
Another great idea for docs is to do a series of franchise specific videos:
The Evolution of Friday the 13th Documentaries:
1. Jason X DVD
- The Many Lives of Jason Voorhees
2. From Crystal Lake to Manhattan: the Ultimate Edition DVD Collection
- Crystal Lake Chronicles
- Secrets Galore Behind the Gore
- Crystal Lake Victims Tell All
3. Friday 1-8 Deluxe Editions
- individual BTS Docs for each film
4. His Name Was Jason
5. Crystal Lake Memories
im not huge on documentaries, but once in a while, maybe once a year ill see something interesting.Im slightly surprised by your number 1 though.Thought it would have been one of the big 3. Thanks for another informative video!!
mikieson Yeah the one on the last house has always been a favorite of mine. Plus I love documentaries on really gritty almost Grindhouse like horror.
@@DrumdumsOfficial yeah something about older horror. gritty gives them atmosphere and more feeling "for lack of better words"..Keep pushing out the videos, ill keep watching.Stay safe
mikieson You too brother!👊
Don't know if you did, but I'd like to see you do a top 10 favorite horror soundtracks
matt mallecoccio That’s probably my most requested right now.
Lee, I'm a HUGE horror soundtrack and horror score fan, and would LOVEEEEE to see a Top 10 of this subject done sometime done in the near future!!!! :D
Never Sleep Again is a fantastic documentary! I Am Nancy is another great documentary!
Entertainment Wizard Also, The Night She Came Home is a fun one.
@@DrumdumsOfficial Never heard of that one!
Entertainment Wizard It’s on the Halloween 35th anniversary disc. It Chronicles Jamie Lee Curtis doing her one and only Halloween convention for charity. Really fun watch.
@@DrumdumsOfficial I will go check that out!
I recommend you check "Bait" It's One of the best shark movies the full movie is on tubi tube for free just download the app the movie was released in 2012 but it's a great one!
There's one for silence of the Lambs called inside the labyrinth that offers a great in depth look of the film and the cast. There's also one for scream but I dont remember the name of it
Nick Mesogianes Oh yes I forgot about that one! Really good one.
@@DrumdumsOfficial I think all the hannibal films have great documentaries to them. Always a rewatch I can view over and over
The Halloween Box Set is selling for upwards of 1000 dollars on Amazon. The 10 disc set is selling for about 500 dollars.
Wow really? Damn.
Wow, I've seen all but 4 of these documentaries. lol
My Favorite Horror Documentary Is Never Sleep Again A Nightmare on Elm St Documentary it really stuck to me And it Badass entertaining.
Daniel Harris, had a crush on her forever, since freaking rosanne, the original show, that will tell you it's been awhile. Robp
David King Yes I did know that. That footage, while interesting, feel so far removed from Resurrection.
Whilst not documentaries it was enlightening hearing audio commentary on Halloween 4 and 5 from Danielle Harris. On 4 she was accompanied by Ellie Cornell, on 5 by the director and the actor who played Billy.
Yep. I've listened to both of those docs. The one with Ellie Cornell was funny because they didn't seem to know anything about the franchise.
Top 10 horror anthologies would be a good one, there’s plenty of those out there. I’ve been on a binge watching ones I haven’t seen. Black Sabbath from Mario Bava is a great one.
I actually watched a doc on the band Black Sabbath today, and it mentioned that movie. I never knew Mario Bava directed it.
I didn’t either until I put it on, definitely check it out!
Thanks man and keep up the great work.
cyberray1976 That’s what I keep hearing. Definitely adding it to my watchlist.
a sleeper for me is the Making of The Mist. Very cool to see how that was made. Have you seen that one?
No I have not Michael. I'll seek it out.
@@DrumdumsOfficial it’s on TH-cam. “When Darkness Came: The Making of the Mist”
