Your amazing, your videos have got me to go ahead and start my own hive fleet kraken tyranid army! I had been sitting on it for a few months mulling over what colour scheme to paint, then I saw your videos and everything fell into place, so a huge thank you and keep up your fantastic work.
That's great to hear! Thank you so much for watching, and good luck with your army!
Oh nice, new one is up.
I really enjoyed this! Easy to follow along, relaxing and unobtrusive music - solid narration. Thank you for your work!
Thank you for the kind words!
Mr. Matt, your videos have quickly become my go to not only for learning processes but also just to have on in the background. Very relaxing voice over and excellent quality of content. These HF Kraken jobs are fantastic! Thank you for your wonderful efforts!
Thanks! I'm glad they're useful to you. Thanks for the kind words!
You're an excellent painter!
Thank you!
Awesome video; very inspiring
thanks for watching!
wow, looks great!
thank you!
Absolutely love all of these Tyranid models you're painting, I've been looking for a colour scheme that captures the Tyranids and I think your interpretation of Hive Fleet Kraken is fantastic. This has definitely inspired me to get painting those Leviathan models
Thank you! I'm glad to hear its inspired you. Good luck on your tyranids?
Well done on the models and the video. I’ve decided to go with hive fleet gorgon for my nids, but the skills and techniques are universal regardless of color scheme.
Great choice! Good luck with your army and thanks for watching!
Matt, really cool approach to painting Kraken. Well composed video as well. Thanks.
I appreciate the kind words. Thanks for watching!
This is wonderful, hope your channel blows up
Lovely! I amzing painting, good work!
Thank you very much!
I was looking for a Kraken colour scheme and this was the first to come up. So glad I found your channel, subbed!
Thanks for following! I have a few other Kraken videos up. And more to come. Happy painting!
Me painting a white line: a white line
Him painting a white line: light glinting off tentacles giving the impression of robust flesh
Practice practice practice! Or so I've been told ;)
BEAUTIFUL!
Thank you!
Wow, incredible.
Dude your brush control on those edge highlights is mad!
It's a careful balance between too much coffee and not enough! Also lots of anchor points and breath holding.
Not gonna lie, I’ll be basing my new Tyranids of Hive Fleet Kraken off your paint schemes
That's awesome! I'd love to see your results. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Awesome video. Thanks for the effort!
thanks for watching!
Those contrast paints are like magic
They really are!
@@MattsHobbyHour is there a way to get the 4th edition carnifex liche purple armor color using contrast paints ? would be a big help
@@white3378 Luxion Purple contrast paint is really close in color. I haven't experimented with it on Tyranids yet but I bet it would work well. It might need a little bit of black templar added. Hope this helps and good luck!
I would love to see this scheme on the Parasite of Mortrex!
that would be a cool one to paint!
@@MattsHobbyHour Well that's my vote for your next how to paint video. Your videos actually convinced me to paint my Leviathan Tyranids in this scheme.
These things look damn scary! Great job on that piece Matt!
Thank you! And I agree... I wouldn't want to meet one in person, that's for sure.
Another brilliant model, gives us average Joes hope!
Thank you!
The purple definitely looks amazing as the accent colour. I was doing mine turquoise when I was doing a brighter red carapace (from mephiston as a base) but I'd like to try out your recipe, I really like deepness you get from adding the black. I think because of the orange highlight as well, it goes great with the purple, and then the bits of green on the base contrast with the colours on the mini perfectly.
You have me re-thinking the bases as well, because if I was to follow suit with the purple and deep red, I'd likely not use my frozen planet base any more, but I can use that on my black templars anyway, and it might actually be better on them. will go for maybe a Jungle base on the Nids then. I did want the Jungle base for my Saim Hann Eldar, but I guess I do one as forest and one as Jungle. I could also do a sort oh highland base for the Nids like you have as well. Going to have to think about it.
I'll actually do a tester with the turquoise accents and see how it goes. I can also do a mix that has more green in it, this could be nice.
Lots to consider! I do believe that the bases can really influence the look of the army. Something that compliments the army color scheme is always a good choice.
@@MattsHobbyHour also (when possible) I really like to do a bit of visual story telling with a base, even if it's just something as simple as the biome I am creating, is linked to them via lore.
I like to either represent their planet, and or some kind of battleground that is common between two forces (like I want to do with my BT and Orks. They'll look awesome on display together because of this)
I originally wanted to do some Nids that had been cut off from a main hivefleet (but with enough of their own big synapse bugs to keep them from going feral)
but I had to think of how on earth this would even work. usually if bugs get cut off, you have a catachan situation where they just become the wildlife of a planet, no longer tyranids at all.
I thought what if they got flash frozen though. something happened to a world that made it freeze fast, I don't know I'd really have to look into this.
so then they get thawed out and start to organise. Maybe they adapt to be able to hunt in these conditions, to gain initial strength to be able to leave the planet, so they create some kind of beacon that brings in ships so they can eat them.
that would be cool. I mean it's a bit far fetched, but as far as making my nids thematic to my ice bases (without doing the obvious and painting them to look icy) it's not bad ground work.
I mean if I end up going with the darker/deeper red you devised for yours, I can even say that it changed that colour due to needing to be darker to absorb light as energy while they were frozen (used to be Kraken)
I don't know dude, I mean I could just have them fighting on an ice world and leave it at that, but I feel like I'm missing something if I don't at least try to make the iceworld thematic for the army that's on them (without just painting the minis to look like they belong there)
as really that's it, you want contrast between the base and mini, so having them look like they belong there does not achieve this if you just match the colours.
With Humans, etc you'd model warm clothes on them, but with Nids it's more difficult.
I'm just going to have some of the GS world snow texture on their claws and such., and I also have this frost effect from GSW, that is great when you use it sparingly, to add some frost texture to things like railings.
I think I could do something nice with it on the pipe, on the Neurotyrant.
I'll show you what I come up with anyway, when I get to doing my Gant testers.
also if I end up taking inspiration from your scheme I will state so, not about to just steal peoples schemes, Lol.
If I do end up going for it though it will be a combination of your carapace colour and then Trovarions ice base.
I think it will work though, as that kind of red goes well with those sorts of blue/green colours. Also Orange tends to go nice with turquoise too.
I think I'll have to do the brains in my original idea though, and maybe just bring some more green into it.
as on most tyranids, this will just be things like the guns, or small accent colours. it's only on the ones with the brains where they have a lot of it.
I do think having a similar colour on the base and the mini can work, especially when it's just a small accent colour.
I'll just have to see how they look together though. I can't really know until it's done.
The kind of base you did worked really well for yours, but I think because you added the purple this really made that work. as purple and orange have nice synergy with green.
I also think I want to try your same kind of recipe (3:1) and use a purple contrast instead of the black ,and just see how it looks. as a dark Leviathan would also look great against the ice world base.
also have you see the more modern leviathan skin technique where they thin Volupus pink right down (probably about 3:1 to contrast solution, maybe 4) and it's applied like how you do your skeleton horde (ofc just a lot thinner) so it doesn't really lie on the raised surfaces at all, and just gets into the details.
I think it probably leaves the most subtle of hues to the higher areas, but you just end up with this gorgeous, pink detail.
it certainly looks really nice. I think if you look at the new Norn Queen Emissary, and the picture with the really dark, Leviathan carapace, looks amazing, right?
I think they started with black and glazed in the purples, but you could make a mix like yours, just with the purple and have something that looks similar.
Maybe this is something you could do a video on, too? I'm sure a lot of people would really appreciate that.
anyway dude, I'm gonna stop typing as this msg is probably already huge.
I hope you can derive some worth from my ramblings.
@@D00M3R_MAVS lots of great ideas in there. Good luck with whichever basing/paint route you choose! And thanks for the Leviathan suggestion; I may split up one one of my gaunt units for a bunch of other hive fleet tutorials.
@@MattsHobbyHour yeah, that would be a cool idea.
Great video man, very nice colors. Maybe make your music a bit more upbeat, it’s a bit sleepy time music. Love the paint job bro!
Thanks for watching! I changed the music a bit in my more recent videos, always looking to improve, thanks for the feedback!
Oh shit, now I have to upgrade all my old minis. LOVE the results, but my brains are gonna be more blueish.
Thanks for watching! Blue would look cool too!
I hate to be the one to request it but can you make a painting for the standard Termagants? I'm having trouble painting them. Thanks for another guide! I assume you will be doing the other Tyranid models in the Leviathan boxset too? Winged Prime, Leapers, etc.
Don't feel bad about making a request! I'm happy to take them. Termagants will be coming up in a couple weeks. And you're right, i'll be painting the whole set. The Prime and Leapers are up next; just have to edit the footage. Thanks for following!
Aestetick orgasm.
And then enother five words to push up content up. From bug lover, to bug lover with love :)
Cheers
thanks!
Really nice interpretation of kraken. I always thought the studio job looked garish.
Thank you!
Hey awesome video, you inspired me to start tyranids!! Quick question….what did you use to paint the pipe with that rust effect? :)
Thanks for watching! I used Iron Hands Steel, wash with Agrax Earthshade + Nuln Oil (equal parts mix), highlight scratches with Stormhost Silver. Then I added some rust with thinned down Mournfang Brown followed by thinned down Troll Slayer Orange. Hope this helps. Good luck with your Tyranids!
just making sure, is the flesh terror red and black both contrast colors? or are they base colors? thanks again! amazing job!
They are both contrast colors. I'll be posting a color mixing video soon, possibly this weekend. Hopefully it will help clarify the process. Thanks for watching!
I love this colour scheme! One question though - I have tried your carapace mix on a test model and it comes out a good bit lighter than yours, with the mid tone being more similar to a Khorne Red. I use a dropper to get my ratios. Any tips to get the darker tone?
Thanks for watching and following along! Could be one of a few reasons: it may be looking darker on the video just because of my camera and lighting setup, you may need to apply a second coat, or you may need more black in the mix. I'd bet it's the black. I didn't measure the mix exactly, I just eyeballed it using it best guess; it may be that you need a little more black. They have also reformulated the paints since I made the first mix and the colors may have changed slightly. Lots of variables to consider. You're on the right track and just keep adjusting the mix (very small amounts at a time) until it looks good to you. Good luck! Edit: I forgot to mention that I have a video about mixing a whole bottle of the carapace color. I'd recommend checking that out. That way once you get the mix just right, you will have a whole bottle and wont have to mix it again.
th-cam.com/video/6_VzHoM5ZTo/w-d-xo.html here is the mixing video I mentioned. Good luck!
Thank you very much for the reply! Admittedly, I do find that my Black Templar pot does not seem to be very pigment-dense, so maybe that's influencing the results. I might experiment with something like Black Legion, which I have heard is darker than Black Templar, and see how it goes. Thanks again, love the videos!
brains....brains...BRAINS!
All part of a balanced breakfast
@@MattsHobbyHour Do you ever use oil paint? I've been toying around with them to great results. Quite fun too.
@@ericheideman7512 yeah I use oils for shading armies some times, usually grim dark style fantasy. Pretty effective. What have you been using them on?
@@MattsHobbyHour pretty much that, but also pinwashing for blacklining. Holy hell I wish I would have known about it back in the day.
@@ericheideman7512 yeah it would have been a game changer back then
Hey Matt! Sorry to coment on an old video, but what paints did you use on the pipe and tyramid gunk on the base? Thanks
Hello and thanks for watching! I painted the pipe with Iron Hands Steel, shaded with Agrax Earthshade, and then I added rust with some thinned down Mournfang Brown followed by thinned Fire Dragon Bright. Then I painted some chips and scratches with Stormhost Silver. For the Tyranid stuff, I basecosted with Bonewhite, shaded with Skeleton Horde, added a thin glaze here and there with Magos Purple (blending the edges). Then I highlighted with thinned Bonewhite followed by Offwhite. Hope this helps, and good luck!
