    This looks good one trick I do is something I picked up watching a video for Lefty’s Deceiver I just put the tail feathers on in a bunch and when I have finished the fly I go to the sink and run it under hot water and let it dry hanging up. You would be surprised how well that works.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That sounds like an amazing tip Tony! I've heard of steaming feathers, like by holding them over a tea kettle, but I'll bet this would be even easier than that. And if you can do it after you've tied it, you could do a bunch at a time. I'm going to remember this one. :-)

      Great catch Jim! Someone else mentioned the same thing. My black zonker strips were from a very old pack and I didn't even think to consider how they were cut. The orange one I tied just before this (at the start of the video) was probably cross cut because they laid down much better.

    Nicely tied. I’ll bet The Black Death was was inspired by Stu Apte’s Tarpon Fly. It has pretty much the same profile, but Apte’s fly has a hackle collar instead of a fur collar.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have seen the fly you're talking about! I didn't know it was called the Apte Tarpon Fly, but you're 100% right that this has to have been inspired by it. Apparently that pattern is pretty popular in the tarpon world. I'm looking it up now and see it was one of the flies we made postage stamps out of back in the 90s. Up there with the Royal Wulff, Jock Scott and Lefty's Deceiver. Pretty cool stuff.

    Hi Matt. I just found this tarpon fly you posted about a year ago. It’s nice to see you doing some stuff outside the trout, bass and panfish realm. I’m tying for Bahamas and Belize trips coming up. Belize will be a first and hopefully check some boxes on the ol’ bucket list. Anyway, when you wrap zonker strips, be sure to use ‘cross-cut’ strips for this as the hair lays back naturally. Or cut it off the hide securely and twirl it into a dubbing loop for even better results. Peace my friend and happy tying.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, great tip Tom! I've rarely used zonker strips for anything but streamer wings so most all of mine haven't been of the cross-cut variety. But I have seen them in the shops and might have to pick up a couple of packs. Or make some of my own. I've got plenty of rabbit pelts. :-)

    Circle hooks have their place, but it’s primarily for fishing with bait. I fish tarpon quite a bit and I would not use a circle hook on a fly. I rarely fish them with bait, but I do use a circle hook then. Just my take on it.

      Ahhh... great call Michael! I didn't even think to pay attention to how these zonker strips were cut. I believe the orange ones I used (in the fly I showed at the beginning) were probably cross cut. That one was definitely fuller and laid back nicely.
