  • Recipe for making Jamaican callaloo with salt fish. This is one of those dishes that enjoyed in Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean and is normally served with fried dumplings, bammy, yam and other ground provisions (or food as it's known in Jamaica). A wonderful spinach like dish that packed with iron and can also be enjoyed as a vegetarian meal if you leave out the salted fish pieces.

I'm Jamaican-American, but I'm just now learning how to cook Jamaican food. I made this and it turned out SO GOOD! Tasted just like it did when I was a kid! I made some boil dumplin on the side...hmmm! Thank you!

maybe thats the way you call it, but I assure you that it's called callaloo in Jamaica and in Trinidad and Tobago it's know as chorai. In North America, it's called pig weed.

Actually, callaloo is what most people know as taro leaves. But in the Caribbean leafy vegetables have different names. Just to be sure, I went on Wikipedia to look up callaloo, so hence my comment. This vegetable that you're using, in my country we call if "Gomma Wiwiri" or "Gomma W'wiri". The descendents of the Maroon slaves in my country used to call this "Gogomago" or "Agomma wiwiri". I have no clue what the Latin name is, but last week I prepared this and it was toooo good :):)

Hi Chris,I'm thinking I did something wrong or I used the wrong leaf.
My father bought home some callaloo bush, but I noticed the leaves weren't as big as yours, but more so smaller and less leaves, but more stalks/stems.
Neverthless, i washed and cut everything up and proceeded to steaming down with my seasonings etc.
I found the callaloo took forever to get soft. The stems remained sooooo hard even after nearly 40 odd mins.
The end result, tasted really nice BUT the stems/stalks were

Callaloo is really spinach because you to use the spinach and it tastes just the same I'm from st. Croix Virgin Islands and away we make it we make it like soup but I also know how to do it like the Jamaicans my son's is half and half half crucian which is San Croix Virgin Island and half Jamaican so therefore I know how to cook both ways what does saltfish you have to boil the salt out of it also we make Johnny cakes Jamaicans make baked both of them are nice to go with it also there's a whole lot of dish that could be made I never use Scotch bonnet with my callaloo I may use a little bit of Scot bonnet Maybe with my fish but anyway you put it we all cook different

Yes soak it over night, or boil the salt off 2 or 3 times before you use it
