    I really like this video because it makes juilliard a lot less scary. I'm training to audition for both juilliard and berklee and even though berklee is my first choice, I always fantasize being accepted to juilliard.

    For several years I took classes in the Juilliard Evening Division. I would often wander around the practice room halls just to listen to what the students were playing, and how well they were playing it. It was awesome to be surrounded by such music, and such talented kids.But this video shows us the human side of what you all go through - or went through. I really enjoyed hearing all the different perspectives and seeing how you all manage to keep a good sense of humor. Thanks for posting this.

    • @ThatViolaKid

      +tonshaad1230 It's not THAT competitve, but it was mostly meant as a joke!

    • @downtown82
      @downtown82 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +tonshaad1230 I can imagine that when you're between the best of the best you just want to keep the standard high as a group of students. These people know they will get a job. There would be no need to create a unhealthy competition.

    God I’m so happy you’re breaking the stigma of “oh ho ho I’m in an Ivy League school oui oui im better than you” type of attitude people tend to expect from kids in colleges like Juilliard and Harvard etc.. you seem like a super fun person, I’d totally hang out with you if were in Juilliard.

    LOL! "It's not competitive at all!" As if! Back in the mid-90s I had a friend accepted to Juilliard who was doing the same things as me in my own music school. But, she told me the only difference was that the students all hate each other because they view each other as their competition!

    I go to science school. All I need is a computer and I get access to my textbooks and journals.
    It's all reading, you spend more time reading than in the lab.
    My eyes are getting worse for it and I get brain fog.
    I wish we had a dance or acting class between classes to to open up our minds because I think your creativity dies when you read facts all the time.
    They tell us to be creative to come up with hypothesis but I think art would help with that.
    I try and do something creative to train myself to think outside the box, I do creative dance.
    I believe art is really important for thinking outside the box.

I have no formal vocal training or any acting experience outside of school, so I have similar feelings

      I was in the same boat throughout most of high school. I am a mezzo-soprano (and beginning contrabassist, but I don't plan on playing professionally), and I never attended a school with a music program growing up. I participated in my city's orchestra as a chorister, but my experience kind of ended there. I started college as a non-music major and instantly regretted it. I am currently a music minor at a conservatory, and will be auditioning to switch my major to Music Therapy/Education. Moral of the story is: You should always follow your dreams. However, they will not come easy. But it is possible. You just might need to take a slightly different route than your peers who have been taking lessons since they were two.

    Hi! Thanks so much for your video, it looks like you guys have a lot of fun! Have you seen the movie Whiplash? I heard it's based off of Juilliard and I was wondering if there is an atmosphere that drives people to hate their music rather than love it. I know it's competitive, but does it cross a line into insanity? Thanks!

    • @ThatViolaKid
      @ThatViolaKid  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zach C Hahaha thanks for the question bro! I have not seen Whiplash, but I've heard of it and I can definitely say it's not based on Juilliard. The environment is definitely not like that. Most teachers don't go make their students go insane. I think many of the aspects in the movie are an exaggeration of real life! Pay it no mind :)

      @MartinManweiler 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ThatViolaKid I didn't apply this semester. I have had a bit of operatic training it's not really where my heart is entirely. More of a crossover Josh Groban type thing but more contemporary is my preference. I would have to get a scholarship to attend as that's why I'm not really going to Berklee, so much $$.

    I used to be impressed by schools with the names. (You know the so called Ivy Leagued schools) But not any more. I see schools like that now through a different lens. Like Juilliard for example, it is easy to take in students who are already at the top of their craft, having worked, trained and been taught for years by other teachers, instructors, coaches, private tutors, etc including their high school and maybe even middle school music teachers. They have practiced their asses off for years night and day to be as good as they are. Juilliard takes someone in already on the 99th rung of the 100 rung ladder (that audition process, only going for the best) and then refines and tweaks them and then gets ALL the credit. Of course Juilliard; look at what you started out with.
    Juilliard and schools like it would impress me more if they took a raw student and taught, coached, trained & made them into a virtuoso or brought them to the top. Now that would be A school and be more impressive to me. I mean it is what A school is designed to do, teach. If you are that good as a school, let me see you take someone who isn’t already at or on the 98th or 99th rung of the ladder, but who is say on the 60th or 45th rung and (teach) bring them to the 100th rung, the top. Now that would really impress me. But, hey it is what it is and this is just an observation.

    Tbh Juilliard is my dream school. It always has been since 7th grade. I’m just scared I won’t get in. So many have already been practicing and are super good at instruments. I just feel like I should have started years ago playing an instrument. I feel like it’s too late to start now and I will never be as good as people that go to Juilliard. I know that by saying this it puts me down but like I’m just super scared because I’m not studying anything but music. I’m trying to become a successful musician one day and I’m scared that if that doesn’t work, then I will have no plan in the future. I’m scared that I won’t become successful or I won’t have an alternative just in case my dream doesn’t work out. Rejection is always going to be my biggest fear. I just don’t know what to do. Any advice?
