john coffey took away the "bad" from people. he could do that because he was innocent as an angel. sent down to earth to spread something positive. he ws so innocent and pure so ordinary people couldn't even fathom how pure he was.
There are eight states in the south that still use the electric chair for the death penalty.
What is more horrific is it 4% ( underestimated due to lack of DNA before 1990s ) Death row inmates and those who have been put to death were innocent.
The majority of those who are put to death were black, then white, then Latin.
Just recently several men were exonerated posthumously after the executions when DNA proved that they had not done the crime.
The United States is the largest penal colony in the world. We have the most people in prison than any other nation combined.

It has been estimated that more than 45% of all inmates are innocent but chose to agree to a plea bargain because the government stacks such high charges and sentences on them knowing they cannot defend themselves with a public defender these people then choose to take a sentence of 10 sometimes 25 years rather than being sentenced to life in prison for something they didn’t do.
@@mamaalaska I'm from the UK 🇬🇧 and I do not agree with capitol punishment .. as you point out mistakes have been made and innocent people have been put to death. .I know some people say an eye for and eye but that is in the Bible and therefore the only person to make that decision is Our Lord himself.. otherwise we become what they are...killers.. the "dark flies" coming out of john coffe, its darkness. evil energy that makes us sick. he absorbed it taking away illness. when he spill the dark flies into percy, he did an act of divine justice, making him having the terminal cancer the lady had, and controlling him into killing billy the kid. billy the kid was possesed by a demon send to corrupt john coffe. watching the atrocity of a human (even that was possesed) as he says "killing them for what they love" talking about the kid sisters he was send to be executioned for. so john killed literally 2 birds with one stone: percy terminally ill probably dead in a few months, and billy the kid instantly killed. two evil people gone. btw billy the kid was evil even before demonic possesion.

Jade Thorne: This is how empaths feel, & I completely got what [the character] John Coffey meant. I once said to a cluelessly optimistic boyfriend, "Don't you ever feel the pain of living?" He looked at me like I was from Mars, & scoffingly replied, "WHAT are you talking about?!" After a while, I realized his utter insensitivity to the pain of others (as well as other red flags) was a sign of narcissistic personality disorder. I left, & never looked back.
The thing about Stephen King writing these characters, is that he makes you feel bad and cry about awful men like Del, who raped and killed a girl, then burned her body, causing a fire and killing 6 more people. It's hard to believe that the soft man that cried over a damn mouse being killed committed those atrocities. Super complex and layered characters.

This movie makes even some of strongest people cry. Great movie that I've seen countless times.
I read Stephen King since I was in 4th grade. Eyes of the Dragon, got me hooked. I’ve watched all of his film adaptations since, and I can tell you this one is almost word for word exactly like the book. The book is amazing. Frank Darabont, wrote, produced and directed it. That’s why it’s so amazing and true to the book, and the casting directors and actors also did an amazing job. Sometimes things all work together to create a masterpiece.
Eyes of the dragon is my favorite SK book and one of the few that have no movie
I have read his books since I was young too. I remember reading this series but I kept the second last book until the last one was released because it was too hard to wait XD
Yea, Eyes of the Dragon is great fantasy. And very funny.
When I was 6, I used my allowance to buy Stephen King's "Carrie" novel, and my mom's friend yelled at me for that, but my mom said that if I understood it, then I could have it. She had me do a book report for just her and we kept up this tradition to this day and I'm in my 40's.
@@SuburbanSavage My first King's book was Misery, Carrie was my second - but it was early 90's (Misery was published in 1990 in czech language), when finally King's books started to be published in the former Czechoslovakia (later I found out that before our Velvet Revolution Dead Zone and Firestarter were published in Czechoslovakia). I was hooked for long time to his books.
When Del says "I sure wish I could have met you guys somewheres else" it always gets me. This is an awesome movie.
I own a copy of this movie and have watched it probably 50+ times. I have never tired of the wonderful complexity of the characters. It's on my top 10 of all time list.
This movie was so good, that man that was saving people and he never rapped them little girls or killed them he died for nothing he was saving everyone but himself 😢🙏🏽

One thing Stephen King does beautifully is write truly nefarious characters. I read somewhere that this began when he had a dream of a very large black man sitting on a cell cot and from that tiny seed came this masterpiece. He truly is genius. He is a GOAT!
This (along with Shawshank) are my favorite works of his.
The effluvium exiting Johns' mouth is a physical manifestation of the negative (Death) forces he's drawn into himself to save another. As others have mentioned, the script for this film follows the book almost line for line. Loved J's reaction to it.
*there's much symbolism throughout this movie, same with the book. Some reviewers of the book thought John Coffey was a representation of the Christ..

The flies are how the sickness that was in them manifested in order for John to be able to get rid of it
He was able to heal but he couldn't bring back the dead, that's why he said to give him the mouse before it was to late because it wasn't all the way dead yet
And he gave Percy that woman's tumor because he knew that he was going to go abuse those patients in the mental hospital so he decided to get rid of two bird's with one stone

This movie is in my Top 5 best movies, along with two similarly-set others, The Shawshank Redemption, and Road To Perdition. Two are Darabont-directed, two star Tom Hanks, two are from the mind and pen of Stephen King, all three are set in the 1930s, and all three feature the hauntingly beautiful music of Thomas Newman. Can’t go wrong with any of them.
Quite simply one of the greatest films ever. A fabulous adaptation of Stephen King's novel. A typically wonderful performance from Tom Hanks and an outstanding performance from the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan.

I always get a huge lump in my throat and a tear in my eye when they have to execute John Coffey. This is truly an amazing movie.
Let's not forget how unlikable the Percy character is,he did a great job acting that out!

Doug Hutchison is such a fantastic actor. I'll never forget him as Eugene Victor Tooms from The X-Files. That's one of those episodes that's always stayed with me because of that character!
The first time I saw this movie, it was in the theater and John Coffey had me sobbing uncontrollably! It still gets me.
John was an Angel that could take away illness or injury. He couldn’t raise people from the dead (Mr. Jingles wasn’t dead). He tried to “take it back” with the little girls but, they were already dead. The short novel explains a lot more. The bug looking things were just a representation of the disease/illness.
John gave him a piece of him when he held Paul's hand so he understand way he was. He also gave paul extra life (well beyond is his years).
I love this movie. The line where he said people are over the world are ugly to each other still seems that way today. I cried when John died but thought at least he's at peace now. We could learn a lot from John. Can't wait for the next movie.
I didn't just tear up a bit. All the characters are so realized. And the fellow who played John is absolutely magnificent. I read the novel, a very great novel, before I saw the film so I knew what was coming, but it was still as I say so fully realized on screen.
I’ve owned mice and rats. They’re sweet, smart, and affectionate. In all the years I’ve owned them, I’ve never been bitten. Not once. I hope you get past your fears because there’s a lot of incredible creatures out there. Humans are far more destructive and selfish.
It's bad coming out of his mouth, be it disease or death, that he draws out of others to make them well or bring them back to life.
When he found the little girls, he was trying to bring them back to life.
Another all time classic with an unforgettable cast. You can tell a great movie when you don't notice the length and don't want it to end. Hanks, Duncan and the rest of these ultra talented actors give all time great performances from the heart. I've seen this movie a dozen times and it never gets old. I'm so glad you loved it. Once again, thanks my brother.

oh yeah, I'll be watching. This one follows the book so closely which rarely happens. For anyone who hasn't seen this movie my advice is to have tissues, tissues, more tissues.
John Cofey’s character/situation is based off a real person. His name is George Junius Stinney Jr. You should look up his story,and also check out the movie ‘Carolina Skeletons’.

Great reaction per usual. I love seeing people’s reactions to movies and hearing what their perception of what’s going on or what’s going to happen next.
It’s funny because it occurred to me the other day that I’ve love seeing movie reactions before there was TH-cam. My husband worked at a movie theater putting the films together so we got to watch movies free. Jurassic Park came out and it was amazing way back then. Especially when you consider it’s STILL amazing today.
Anyway, I saw that movie 14 times in the theater because I loved getting to see people react to it for the first time. Was never disappointed!
This movie is just beautiful. It’s a long film but you don’t notice. I just love the music and the drama already starting the movie off. Slow motion shots. It’s a classic movie. Love the cast in the movie. Tom Hanks is outstanding and Michael Clarke Duncan omg. Favourite character is David Morse’s as Brutal Howe. Such a great support for the rest of the cast. Micheal Jeter is amazing as French cell man on death row. Doug Hutchison is so evil in his role as Percy as is Sam Rockwell as Billy the kid. What a film

I love watching your reactions to films many of us have raved about for years. I hope everybody else sits waiting for your reaction to the next ‘moment’ that’s coming up. Also well done for keeping an open mind in deciding what to watch. Some of my favourite movies are the ones I probably wouldn’t have chosen to watch; I only saw Boys On The Side years and years ago because I was sick and too lazy to find the remote and since then it’s been one of my favourite films of all time. And we love The Green Mile in this house too 😊

Glad you are reviewing this film..I've watched it many times and still cry and wish for a different ending..brilliant performances by all..unfortunately Michael Clarke Duncan who played John Coffey died not long after this.. David Morse and Tom Hanks are always top notch but Doug Hutchison has to have a mention as the absolutely vile Percy..and yes I cried again tonight watching you watch it. .there are two I'd like to nominate for you to watch and review..they are The Notebook which probably isn't your shtick but a great movie with James Garner..Gena Rowlands Ryan Reynolds in an early role and one that should be right up your street..No way out staring Kevin Costner..Gene Hackman and Sean Young..its a thriller with a kicker edge of your seat ending..also Jagged Edge with Glenn Close and Jeff Bridges another tense end and finally The Firm with Tom Cruise..Gene Hackman..Brilliant..oh ive just remembered another one..its frim the 70's.. Where Eagles Dare with Clint Eastwood. .Richard Burton..full action ww2 film
Michael Clark Duncan (RIP) wasn't really that tall, he was on a small riser. Mike is only 6'3. David Morse "Brutal" is 6'7, so Michael would walk on a little platform when doing interactive shots with other cast members.
The world lost an amazing man the day Michael Clarke Duncan passed. Such a beautiful human being.

If you pay attention to what Tom Hanks' character said, something about if John could make a little mouse live for so long how many years does he have left. A mouse typically only lives for 2 years, that mouse lived for decades, nearly a century. He also explained that he out lived his own kids.

The Truman Show (w/ Jim Carry)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (A Spielberg film w/ Richard Dryfuss)
The Martian (w/ Matt Damon)
Ghost (w/ Patrick Swayzie & Whoopi Goldberg)
That is just a few, all are noteworthy for different reasons, but I think you will enjoy the storytelling in all. These were all big films of the day.
This is one of my favorite movies that I have watched many times and I cry every time. First time I saw it in the theaters when it was released, I was sobbing, and I wasn't the only person in the theater doing that. I am surprised that you didn't mention the acting by Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey). HE was AMAZING and should have won the BEST ACTOR in a SUPPORTING ROLE award at the Oscars in 2000 but he lost to Michael Caine. SO sad that he passed away so soon at 54 years old in 2012, I think that is another reason WHY I still cry so much when I watch The Green Mile. I always wondered how long had John Coffey been alive? It was 1935 when he was executed and he had whip scares on his body, which makes me wonder if he had been a slave during the Civil War and possibly longer before that! If Paul was 108 at the end, and the mouse (who only live about 3-5 years if they are protected) was still around 60 years after 1935, you can see why Paul wonders how much time will he live on. The material that John Coffey releases from his mouth has to be whatever illness (or death as long as it is immediately after ) he is able to draw out of the affected person. I notice that a few reactors think it's flies, and so did I for a few seconds when I saw the movie for the first time. But then you notice that they just disappear. ALL the other actors did a fabulous job too, but Michael Clarke Duncan stood out, for me. It was such a physically and emotionally charged role he had to play. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan, you have touched every person with your amazing portrayal of John Coffey.

What a great movie ... get some tissues because like everyone else, you'll get hooked and you'll get watery eyes too. It always gets me and I've seen it many times now. Michael Clarke Duncan does an outstanding performance as John Coffey (like the drink only not spelled the same). 'I tried to take it back' ... those words will play an important part in the story. JC reminds you of someone else with those initials? Remember this at the end. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan
Next movie, again by Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise would be Forest Gump. You have to watch that one too, before any other. You'll know why when you watch it.

I sobbed uncontrollably at the end of this movie. I have never been affected like this by a movie or anything ever. I am not sure why. But it was a great movie. I don't think I can watch the end again.

This movie is on Netflix here but I can't watch it because it's so sad and that one dry death seen was hard enough to read, let alone watching it. I'm glad you got to see a great movie for a book adaptation too. Thank you, Mate
Fun fact: DEL (the guy who trained Mr Jingles) was also an actor in the sesame street. Particularly in Elmo's World program in the 90s. His character's name in that show is Mr Noodle.

This movies gets me every time I see it 😭. Michael Clark Duncan played such a unique part. RIP 🕊. Tom Hanks always conforms to his roles and makes you feel it, from all perspectives. Percy was such a little b****, I couldn't stand him. Lol But the movie was great 👍👍 !
I finally gathered the balls to watch this film for the first time this year. I knew what happened which is why I didn’t watch it. Safe to say, it broke me, and couldn’t stop bloody crying! But my goodness, what an amazing film. Definitely one of my favourites

I've never met one person who hasn't cried seeing this movie.
I got hooked on Steven King books right around the time this movie was released & yet I often stayed away from the movie adaptations because so.often I would be disappointed. BIG mistake on my part! This movie (like several.others) turned out exceptionally, and make sure to keep the tissues handy.
Side note - In the 90's I was a server in a busy 24hr restaurant in Florida & one night while getting ready for work was watching Jay Leno & Steven King was a guest. After trying to figure out why this guy looked so familiar, I realized I had actually waited on him several times at my restaurant. He was very low key, nice & unassuming, no diva behavior at all. I had not known that King resides in Florida for part of the year. Looking back, I wish I could have told him how much I appreciate his work.

Sounds exactly like I imagine King in person. So normal you wouldn’t even suspect he’s famous, because he understands human nature probably better than any psychologist. Such an incredible imagination and storyteller. I loved hearing this about him!

John Coffy is a healer. He is plagued with pain from everyone how judges him and accuses him of wrong doing. Remember the times (1935).

I’ve had this movie on DVD for 20 years and have always been too scared to watch it..now I’ve got too! Even though I cried more or less right through this video

Fun fact: James Cromwell (the warden) is the tallest man to be nominated for an Oscar at 6'7, but Tim Robbins (Andy from Shawshank) is currently the tallest winner of an Oscar at 6'5.
I've experienced a lot of sicknesses and injuries in my life, and let me tell you that having a urinary tract infection was the most painful and miserable feeling that I've ever experienced. I've had 387 gallstones, meningitis twice, several surgeries, hit by 2 cars, glassed by a drunk in the face, thrown out of a window of a Winnebago that was on fire, stabbed in the shoulder, shot in the leg, had a baby, had all 4 wisdom teeth removed with no anesthesia, etc., and I'd take all of those again if I never had to experience a UTI ever again. It is that bad!

I watched this movie a million times, i literally turn it on to watch if I can't find anything to watch, I watched one time for about 2 months everyday!! I love John Coffey, like the drink, just not spelled the same....❤❤❤
