    She kissed the priest on the cheek at the end bc she didn’t remember “anything”…but she still had flashes of the priest collar as someone who…helped her in some way, felt the need to thank him. She didn’t know it wasn’t the same man & she didn’t know why she felt grateful. Her subconscious knew a priest saved her, I guess?😉

      There’s one scene written out of the movie from the book. The famous stairs scene, Regan was supposed to chase Sharon (the woman you see the mom with most scenes), and Willie the house maid. Would have made that scene more terrifying.

    Father Merrin and the demon (Pazuzu) had a history. They've battled before in his younger years as a priest. It's why Merrin recognized the artifact he dug out of the hole and was a little shocked. He knew Pazuzu was back and they would battle again. The scene with him faced off with the statue, with the sound of dogs fighting, signified this. As well, you hear Pazuzu mention his name a couple of times on the backwards recording and scream his name when he enters the home.

    I saw this in the theater a few nights after my first major breakup with a guy, and my college roommate pulled me to the theater to get my mind off things. And boy, DID IT WORK! Imagine seeing that movie on a large screen with all the sound pounding in your ears and the dialogue (especially Reagan’s exorcism) so loud you couldn’t shut it out even if you didn’t want to hear it. Absolutely terrifying! I’ve seen it several times since then, but I wouldn’t want to go back to see it in a theater again; way too intense.
    BTW: The Theme From the Exorcist is a haunting piece of music, adapted from a hauntingly beautiful composition called Tubular Bells by composer Mike Oldfield/Oldfeld. There are three or four adaptations of the piece, but I think it was in its second adaptation when used as the theme for The Exorcist. It would be a good piece of music to react to. Full orchestra with a progressive rock sound.

    The “Coin” was not a coin. It was St. Christopher. A saint that protects from evil. The little statue was the demon Pazuzu. There are so many things that have certain meanings in this movie. Especially if you are catholic, you catch them and that’s what made it so damned scary! The little girl was actress Linda Blair.

      Interesting fact about those steps: during the making of 'The Exorcist', the film's crew stuck rubber pads on each of those steps, and they had a stuntman genuinely jump out of the window and tumble down every single one of them to the bottom. Even with the rubber sheets, it was still an incredibly risky stunt. The stuntman said that the key to him falling down them without seriously harming himself was to allow his muscles to go completely limp. So, that fall you see in the movie was an AUTHENTIC FALL (albeit with rubber sheets on top of each step). 🤐

    One of the things about this film that nobody hardly knows is that the hospital testing scenes were filmed by an actual medical staff in Bellevue hospital in NYC, performing actual procedures of the time. Anyhow, the radiologist in the movie, actually went on to become a serial killer in NYC a little while after appearing in the movie.

    The St. Joseph's pedant necklace is what protected Fr. Karras from evil. The demon had to take it off of him in order to possess him. Then the demon tried to harm Regan and Fr. Karras sensed that and was conscious enough to stop himself and sacrificed himself by jumping out of the window. It's tragic and sad that he had to die.

    • @BudhagRizzo
      @BudhagRizzo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's actually a St. Joseph pendant, but yes, it's why the demon ripped it off Karras before possessing him.

    • @anta3612
      @anta3612 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Which, if you hear real exorcists speak on the subject, is very unlikely to happen as demons have an aversion to sacred objects, avoid even looking at them while coming into contact with them causes great suffering to evil spirits. The demon played on Fr. Karras' guilt over his mother (which is why he probably ended up sacrificing himself as a type of penance I suppose). In reality priests receive absolution before performing an exorcism. This is done so as not to give the demon any ammunition since absolution wipes the slate, containing all wrongdoings, clean and demons know this. Fr Karras wouldn't have died if the correct protocols had been observed. That, however, would have made for a far more mundane and less frightening movie.

  • @kilgh

    "You all see that?" Nope, it was just you. The St Christopher medal was what was protecting Karras. It was fore-shadowed in his dream that he would lose the medal. And his possession was fore-shadowed by the demon saying that the exorcism would bring it and Karras closer together. The book explains a whole lot more than the movie could but basically the demon's whole plan was to get Karras. At the end, even though Karras invited the demon to take him, the demon had to rip off the medal to achieve this. In the "real" case, according to the priest's diary of the events, there were no deaths involved. Just a very confused 13 year old boy and a bunch of adults that appear to have been fooled into thinking it was a case of possession. Either way, the non-fiction book of the actual case is kind of disturbing on a few levels. Also, the white pills Merrin is seen taking throughout the film are for heart disease. Nitro-glycerin. The demon realised that Merrin was dying and that was why it started laughing during the exorcism.

      r
      Real life exorcists say that. while they find some cases disturbing, they don't experience fear during exorcisms. Firstly, because demons tend to hide (pretend they're not there) in an attempt to avoid getting expelled and only expose themselves when forced to (by the rite of exorcism). Secondly, the more the demon rages the more it means it's losing control and about to weaken its grip (like a wounded animal that's cornered and fighting for its life). Thirdly, priests know that God is greater than demons and is the ultimate authority and those who have been correctly trained to carry out the rite of exorcism know its power and thus also know they have nothing to fear provided that they follow the correct protocols. The priests in the movie, however, followed none of the correct protocols which is why they got into trouble. In reality priests need to have a mandate from a bishop as well as spiritual back up and support (no mavericks).

    The end can be confusing if you see it for the first time. After the elder priest dies (Max von Sydow), The younger priest (Jason Miller) got the demon latched onto him. Before the demon could get a real grip of him, he decided to jump out of the window.

      However, demons are not subject to time or space. They are spirits and as such can be omnipresent and/or change location in a blink of an eye. The Iraq scene implies that the demon/ evil has existed even from the primordial past. Fr Merrin has done exorcism before and possibly met this demon. The battle between and the demon will conclude in this movie.
    Aside from demon possession it's a story of the priest seeking redemption and made the ultimate sacrifice. Fr khais faith was terribly weakened due to the guilt from his mother's death. His redemption came when Regan's mother desperately asked if her daughter will die. Realizing that he could not allow another tragedy to happen Fr Kharis returned to the room determined to save the child from the demon. This regained his strength and faith. NOTE : Back then Catholics believed suicide is a sin. So the scene where Fr Kharis confesses his sin before he dies was necessary in order for him to received salvation. Yes the Demon did not die that's why you need to watch part 3.
    The medallion for Catholics are like icons and signs that remind or visually give us direction to God. In the final scene the possessed girl /demon actually REMOVED it from Fr. Damian so it could transfer it's spirit to the priest and possessed him
    Please watch EXORCIST III . Considered a direct sequel and a conclusion. It will suppose to answer some questions. Skip part 2-- Not that good

      Apparently, all demons go far back in the annals of time. They are as ancient as the human soul (millions of years old) and are actually believed to have had a soul originally and to have come from the creation of God, along with every other living, sentient being (humans, animals, plants, etc.). Somewhere along the way, they became completely disconnected from God/The Creator, hence their "demonic"/anti-God nature.

      Some demons are gods from another pantheons. For the polytheistic Jews, these pagan gods are demons. When Christianity appropriated Judaism the practice continued. Demonization is a very common practice among Abrahamic faiths and was even used during the age of European colonization.

    Fun fact: Mercedes McCambridge, who provided the voice of the demon, insisted on swallowing raw eggs and chain smoking to alter her vocalizations. The actress, who had had problems with alcohol abuse in the past, furthermore wanted to drink whiskey as she knew alcohol would distort her voice even more, and create the crazed state of mind of the character. As she was giving up sobriety, she insisted that her priest be present to counsel her during the recording process. At William Friedkin's direction, McCambridge was also bound to a chair with pieces of a torn sheet at her neck, arms, wrists, legs and feet to get a more realistic sound of the demon struggling against its restraints. McCambridge later recalled the experience as one of horrific rage, while Friedkin admitted that her performance--as well as the extremes which the actress put herself through to gain authenticity--terrifies the director to this day. This was probably the reason why Friedkin declined to call back McCambridge to provide the demon's voice for the film's TV version, instead deciding to do the voice himself.

      The Oscar nominations proved The Exorcist was not a typical horror flick. It wasn't really horrific, in my opinion. I would describe it more as a thriller/disturbing movie. Horror movies, especially Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween & those after, rarely get nominated for Oscars, particularly for acting. The Exorcist featured very seasoned actors & it was a high quality made movie, unlike today's "horror" movies. The Exorcist is better described as a very disturbing movie.

    The coin is actually a well known medal. They used the St Joseph medal in the movie whereas the St Benedict medal is traditionally used in exorcisms. If the girl was still possessed she would not have been able to bear touching a sacred object (such as the medal or the rosary). This is seen as proof that she had been completely delivered of the evil presence. Real exorcisms are performed in a sacred place (such as a church) this is done to weaken the demon/s as they have an aversion to sacred objects and places and will try to get away from them (thus facilitating the exorcism). Priests are assisted by a group of people who pray outside the room where the exorcism is taking place. This is to support the priests spiritually and to prevent any harm coming to them.

    • @anta3612
      @anta3612 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which, in reality, is nonsense as demons prefer to kill those who they know are outside of the grace of God because their ultimate purpose is to drag people to hell. If they kill someone (such as a child who has just been delivered from an evil spirit) that child most likely would go straight to heaven. When a demon possesses a person it's main purpose is to work through that person to get as many other people as possible on the road to perdition before destroying its host. I'm not sure about the possessed priest because, since he sacrificed himself, I think that would merit a 1st class ticket to heaven which the demon would not have wanted so am not sure how that would work . While this movie portrays some elements of truth others have been greatly sensationalized.

      @@krwawyrzeznik Hi, it sounds like this comment was meant in jest. Lots of people share the opinion that it's all nonsense. This is probably because, according to the Catholic Church, true demon possession has become rare in the west (though I hear it's on the increase) and in most cases someone who is possessed doesn't display obvious signs that something is amiss. Someone else in these comments mentioned that in this movie the demon's goal all along was to possess the priest since he would have been considered a better prize and, since his faith was wavering, the demon knew it wouldn't be too difficult to weaken his resolve. I've heard testimonies of priests who have said the opposite. They say they didn't believe in demon possession but after assisting with an exorcism, not only do they now believe, it also helped strengthen their faith. Btw only priests who are strong in their faith are given a mandate to perform exorcisms by the Church while ordinary priests (those who do not have a mandate or one who is training to be an exorcist) may be asked to assist. The two priests in this movie did not follow Church protocol and as a result ended up putting themselves in peril. In reality the Church has strict rules about this sort of thing (no mavericks) for a reason and priests in real life would have known better.

    🎬Your lack of knowledge of Christian symbols and symbolism is getting in the way of your understanding. For one thing the "coin " as you've been calling it is not a coin. It was/is the equivalent of what I know to be a St.Christopher medal. An angel/talisman worn as a necklace to protect one from evil. St.Christopher, himself, I don't know much about what he did that makes Catholics hold him in such high esteem. Personally, Iv'e always view it's power as a symbol, as being no less than that of a cross.✝
    🎬View Father Merrin & the demon no differently than Vader & Obi Wan, they are old foes. At the archeological site, St.Christopher medal, the demon symbol found in the dirt. They imply that mankind has been dealing with this nasty little fucker for centuries ...that place was old, so maybe millennia. Him standing across from the demon's statue, the dogs fighting, was an omen to Merrin of things to come. He already knew he would be summoned for the exorcism and the demon knew he would be coming.
    🎬On the tape Karras made you can hear him calling Merrin's name and when Merrin came to shake Karras' hands at the house, you heard the demon yell. Listen carefully, What he yelled was MEERRRINNN!!! Merrin's name. That's why when Karras started talking about Regan having split personalities, Merrin cut him off with, "There is only one." You repeated it yourself @ 24:03.
    🎬I'm an old movie-head, if you had any idea of the nasty, suing for rights, studio fighting with WPBlatty over wanting to make a sequel (just for the money, it killed at the box office). The novel was a complete piece of work written in '71. As far as I was ever concerned, the movie, like the novel was a complete piece of work. I've never been able to watch this film because I always remember my dad telling me about how he went to see it in the cinema when it first came out and he had nightmares afterwards, and my dad wasn't easily scared so the film had to be pretty horrific to scare him like that, lol! Just watching the clips you show here is more than enough for me! A couple of scenes made me laugh though because they are so famous and have been parodied so much over the years (the spinning head, projectile vomiting and some of the dialogue, etc). I'm not really a fan of horror movies much in general anyway. I like suspenseful thrillers, edge of your seat kind of films but I don't like a lot of blood and gore. One classic I do love though is The Omen, from 1976. Yes, there are a few gory scenes but nothing like what I've seen in these Exorcist clips. The Omen is a lot more subtle I think, but still psychologically disturbing and creepy. It's slow paced but has a slow build up of tension that's really creepy and suspenseful. You really should watch it. I also like the film Poltergeist from 1982 (I think). It's all a bit silly and far fetched but entertaining with some amazing sequences, including many that will make you jump. I don't care for all the Omen and Poltergeist sequels but the originals are definitely great. :)

    Great reaction video! :) This is one of my favorite movies and I love how it evokes so much emotion and hits you psychologically. With no CGI, the effects still hold up. I highly suggest reading the novel, though, because it does answer some of your questions. Plus you get more dialogue between the demon and Karras and a side story about Karl. I like how you question many of the things going on. It really makes you think: did the demon win or not. In a way it did, because it's ultimate goal was to possess Karras. However, it wasn't betting on him sacrificing himself to save Regan. I don't suggest watching the second Exorcist because it really doesn't fit into the story well. The 3rd movie was great, however. Jayvee: Because of your youth, there were things in The Exorcist you didn't understand that you would have had you been there in 1973 when LSD and Vietnam anti-war protests were BIG things (the scene wherein the actress mother was in a scene about a protest at a college) and the doctor asking the mother if she had drugs in the house). My dad had clogged arteries and veins that later required bypass surgery. His doctor gave him Nitro - tiny white pills in a tiny metal container so he could easily keep it in a pocket at all times. And when Dad felt chest pains, he'd take one of the pills from the tiny metal container and put it under his tongue exactly as the priest/archaeologist did in the first scene. It was telling us the priest/archaeologist had a serious HEART problem that Reagan exploited to kill him in the last scene. Being the first of its kind, this movie was ten times scarier when seen in a dark movie theater on the big screen before people could rent movies and view them at home. And this movie was NEVER shown on TV - all of which made it further scarier because we weren't prepared for the shockingly graphic profanity and special effects never seen before in movies. Also, we were told the movie was based on a real-life alleged demonic possession and exorcism of a teenage boy. That further made the movie scarier. All of the above made the movie ten times scarier in 1973 than you can comprehend today being as how you weren't there then. Unlike the terrible copy-cat movies, the acting, writing, and storytelling were the best of any horror movie in history, which further made it the scariest movie ever for those of us who experienced it in 1973 with people running out of the theater because it was so scary.

The slow pace in the first half of the movie is great in the sense that we see what a nice girl she is. The profanities becomes so much more contrasting later on. Truly a masterpiece.

    Mike Oldfield's album, Tubular Bells, from which a portion was used in the soundtrack, is a fantastic musical opus
    Give your ears a treat and listen to the whole album

    One of the best and disturbing films of all time this is a very difficult film for a lot to watch due to the strong faith aspect. The mother and daughter were atheist and that is how she became susceptible to the demon. The ultimate sacrifice was when Damian told the spirit to enter him and leave the girl. And he had enough spiritual strength for a brief moment to throw himself out the window and at the end she kissed the priests because a part of her remembers and her spirituality and Faith had change even though she may not remember why. Very difficult to understand exorcist 2 but if you want a continuation I recommend exorcist 3 it's not nearly as frightening as this film but it's still a great movie

    AWESOME movie Jay. My sister and I were third and fourth in line for tickets when this movie opened at the theater near us.
    Around the same time was The Omen and The Sentinel, two more great movies if you love horror( my siblings and I were raised on it😂).
    And maybe you also might want to check out Jaws...

    I have read that this was based on a true story, but the child was a little boy, not a girl. There was a movie made about him and I believe the child was taken to a convent or holy sanctuary to be exorcised. The priest at the end of this movie gave the mother a religious blessed medal/necklace, not a coin.

    Saw this movie at 13 and it scared the crap out of me. Seeing it in the theatre for the 50th Anniversary made me appreciate the cinematic wonder of this classic. Great commentary.

    No she wasn't possessed anymore. They showed the demon going into Father Karras. The St Christopher didn't cause it, it was protecting him.That's why the demon pulled it off in order to possess Father Karras. Everything you saw is exactly what happened. Thanx for the reaction, take care..xx

    This movie really freaked me out as a kid. My brother is 8 yrs older than me. I was watching stuff I probably shouldnt have been watching WAY before I should have seen it. lol. If you 'like' this, you should check out the TV show Supernatural.

    I recommend that you check out:
    The Exorcism of Emily Rose which is a wee bit more up-to-date than 1970, stars Tom Wilkinson, Laura Linney and Colm Ferore but is actually based on a true story. Although I gather it had to be toned down quite a bit for film classification.
    Also you might want to look at The Woman in Black, Woman in Black 2 and The Nun.

    What’s really scary about this movie is that there are people who when watching the movie saw what they described as a ‘devil face’ briefly flash during the movie. There’s nothing like that in the actual movie, but the same people who claimed to have seen it would end up dying within weeks of watching the movie.

    Her name is Lynda Blair. She was only 12 when this was filmed. It almost drove her crazy after she watched it.

    Hey Jay 🤗, long time since I been on your channel, ""I know, I know, don't take it so hard my friend, LMBOOTYOFF 🤣!! Only kidding with ya ☺️. Anyhow, I've been watching your reactions to these movies, and as always your reaction to some of them have really cracked me up lol... especially when you did your reaction to this movie, THE EXORCIST... Imagine I was only like 13 or 14 when I first seen it. Back then if anyone was under the age of 18 we'd have to have an adult with us to get in the show, even then most of the kids guardians yanked up the kid they brought and out the door they went!! Man in 1974, this movie scared the living crap out of most adults! We'd never seen anything like this, I mean think about it, it's the early 1970's, and the scariest movie that came out before this one was also a black & white film. ((Abbott and Costello meets Frankenstein, or Count Dracula.)) Come to think of it, I think that the scariest movie that had come out was about ZOMBIES! We all thought, man I bet this movie is going to be boring as hell. We didn't even know what the heck a zombie was!! I couldn't believe what I was actually watching, never in my wildest dreams or life had I ever seen nothing like it!! I was so terrified after watching that movie, yep I still to this day remember the name of that movie, (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!!) I also remember asking my mom to keep my bedroom door open just a crack and to leave the bathroom light on...that movie scared a lot of people; but when The Exorcist came out, it was a whole different kind of scary! This movie when it was released, effected our entire country! Zombies were one thing, but The Exorcist, was on a whole different level of Evil!! I'm sorry, I got a little carried away 😆. I'd love to see you react to one more movie that ("TOM HANKS") stars in: It's as good as his others! You simply can't miss watching TOM HANKS IN ((CASTAWAY)) it took 4 yrs to make and finish this movie!! That's it, that's all I'm gonna say about this lol...☺️ The other movie is called ""THE TERMINAL"", and it's a lot of fun to watch because it's a comedy. So thank you, as always for your great, great REACTIONS!! 🙂😎💙

    The story the movie relates to, happens actually in a neigbourtown where I grew up in Germany. A young lady/teenager was killed during a exorcism her parents and a priest did to her over weeks without food, just some water. She was bipolar, but her parents didn't believe it. I was 11 at that time. It was topic everywhere.

    I watched this at the movies with my girlfriend and I think it was in Dec of 73' we graduated high school 6 months prior. The first part I jumped was when she went to the attic, the lady in front of me must have jumped 3 feet high. If you want to watch the uncut version, it's much better. I wanted to watch it tonight on Halloween Eve but they only had the other parts. There was a couple of things I didn't like with this movie was The Cross and the Virgin Mary

    My cousin and I went to see this when it first came out. He was an atheist, and was until he passed, but on the way home he was ready to go to a church for awhile. I miss him.
