    From reading interviews with Larry Cragg and others this is what I have gathered. Neil's 5E3 is a late model produced toward the end of the tweed Deluxe's production run. It has a different output transformer than most 5E3s (and possibly a different power transformer). He uses 5Y3G "coke bottle" rectifiers and 6L6 power tubes to create massive amounts of power supply sag. When Neil first bought the amp it had 6L6s installed and supposedly nothing has been changed since. Due to the increased heater and B+ current demands, and the 5Y3G being completely abused, they have to run fans on it from the back of the amp. The speakers he uses are Jensen C12Ns with custom cones installed that have an "accordion" type of surround adding even more bass flub than the originals. I heard that Neil has collected hundreds (?!!) of tweed Deluxes trying to find one like it and may have found a few. I have no idea whether the unusual OT was something swapped out by someone or if it came from the factory (quite possible) that way.

      I have a feeling he went to sleep while talking about it. I certainly felt like dozing off while watching...talk about droning on (".)

    you need a larger tip with more heat. That will make it much easier to solder those eyelets. The wires will solder easier if you tin them first. Good work so far.

    I wouldn't bother heat-sinking carbon comp resistors during installation. If a little heat manages to damage it, it's already faulty. Also, if you use a higher wattage iron with a larger tip, or a gun, you'll get the joint to temperature more quickly and less heat will soak into the component anyway.

    Well, I'm anxious to see the result too, but with all due respect for the great video's, you might be in for a nasty surprise just switching out the rectifier tube and transformer. You will need to make some changes to the power section and the biasing to make it work.

    Don't you need an output transformer matching the impedance of 6L6 tubes?

  • @jimilundin3538
    @jimilundin3538 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I read some time ago that Neil young uses 6v6 tubes sylvania sweet leaf big coke bottle tubes I have 2 matched sets I use in my deluxe for the Neil young tone if he does use a 6l6 it would have to be a 6l6g or gb with the extra current draw it would lower the voltage and cause early break up and can be used without changing the transformer although it would put more of a strain on it tube amps are tough

    I believe one of your main problems with the soldering of the joints is your solder iron isn't high enough watts? What was the wattage of it?

    did you wired the schematic as it was standard, or did you make any mod? like, did you install grid stopper resistors on the cathodyne phase inverter?

    I am going to hit the like button ... reluctantly ... you guessed it ... because of the horrible music.
    Nice work on the board.I can appreciate the quality of the work you did.
    Will we hear you play a Neil Young song through this amp?

    • @NeilRobertTurner
      @NeilRobertTurner  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the horrible music Tom (TH-cam free copy-write music) You will hear me play it I just haven't got round to sticking and cutting the hours of me finishing it.Hopefully this weekend.

    you'll need to change your output transformer, as well. A 5F6 Bassman clone might have been a better choice, but where's the fun in that?

    Well some of that music was very bad. LOL. 😉 but I actually liked the last two songs. is it just TH-cam background music? or are they actual songs? does anybody know what they are?

      There somewhere in TH-cams audiolibrary .

    I would seriously look at getting a temperature soldering iron with the correct sized bit Neil, I can almost see that bit going cold as you attempt to make the bigger joints ! It would also remove the need for a heatsink when soldering resistors, as the joint would be made much more quickly. S www.redtapemusic.net
