This is still the best build video you all have. This video shows more and answers questions than Mojotone's most recent videos. The recent ones are more about amp making philosophy rather than actually showing you anything. Most of the new videos talked for 20 minutes about populating something, just to cut at the end of the video and have it completed on the next video. This video, while older, is much better.
Mr Steve, nice job. I always like to mount the power tube cathode bias resistor and cap away from each other to prevent the heat from the resistor from cooking the capacitor and I also like to mount the speaker terminals away from the bottom of the cab to prevent the speaker leads from being pulled on while repeatedly removing the ac cord with normal use . Thank you for the informative video. From one humble tube geek to another.
I finished mine a couple of weeks ago, went great. I had one loose solder joint at the end to fix, but that's all. Sounds amazing, now I understand why everyone wants one of these. You can only really experience it by playing it live, videos do not do it justice.
I sprayed mine with Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane. Oil Based, Satin. Many coats. Has a slight amber tint which works great and easier than brushing. I started with brushing and did not like at all how it took to the cloth. The spray was great. Outside, under a tree, on a nice day. Of course, I took it all apart first so I was spraying the three tweed pieces only; main cab and two back panels. No hardware attached at all, including the legs. Note: Put the screws back in as temp legs while spraying/coating.
Hope you guys do a MIM how to build a British 800 amp, it would help allot of people to make the purchase. By the way, hope you guys and everyone in the area are all safe and doing well after the storm.
looks like a box with velcro on it and the fan is loose. You mean easier since it doesn't move as much or tip over? It doesn't make the actual space easier to work with.
@@sgt.thundercok4704 are you fkn blind? Chassis gets moved and placed on swiveling/tilting chassis holder right at time stamp, zip tied fans added right after. A min or so later it swivels. And to think you took time out of your day to comment and be wrong… and also a Dick. Good job 👍🏼
TOP COMMENT SNIPE to note as of 8/30/2021 their manual is very poorly written around vintage vs. modern wiring. Text out of sequence on pages 14 and 15. The pictures are more accurate, but I need to note the large color sheet they send is VINTAGE wiring. Go by the pics and text on Page 19 on wiring the power cord. Pages 14 and 15 are utter shite. And they should send the full color printout for both Vintage and Modern and LABEL them as such.
Great video, thanks for sharing this. I converted my '59 Bassman to the P2P 5F6-A in 1998 and upgraded via a kit I got from Dan Torres, I upgraded the speakers too. I'm not sure if the speaker change or the 5F6-A circuit the contributed the most. Whatever it was, the amp is just so awesome. It's too loud, needs an attenuator to be gigable, but it's just so awesome :)
To me it's kind of crazy to think about the fact that a Bassman is too loud to be gigable now and wasn't loud enough in the 60s when a guitar amp was pretty much a p.a.
Ordering my 5F3 kit today from Mojotone with a cabinet after getting my IRS check because I needed an amp. Been building electronics for 45+ years and about time .Trying to determine what color Tolex lol
One thing to note is that those filters are rated at 475 volts. When you do the no load test with just the 5Y3, don't run it for long or those caps might go pop, considering there was almost 540 volts across them.
Id fire it up with a variac set on 50 volts ac or so and check for voltages Itll show about half the volts required but you can still check for voltages.
At 21 min. you over-voltaged your filter caps. check the initial DC voltage with all the tubes in place. Same for the filament voltage, since the amp is completed. If there is a fault, you want to know where it's at, which may not show as well under no load conditions.
@@deanmlshredder I'm just saying that if there are no other tubes in the amp except the rectifier, the 500 volt caps will be receiving 530 volts. that's not really a serious over voltage condition, but will not happen if all the tubes are in.
Why is the sequence here different than the manual? I mean, you're the guy in the video AND in a picture in the manual. Which would you recommend? Manual or video?
This is a great video, very helpful and informative! I’m not sure I agree with the practice of soldering the cathode resistors to the capacitor leads. While it is clean and clever, it creates additional work when it’s time to replace the electrolytics in the future.
This particular kit does not have a Reverb tank because it is not in the circuit design. All of our kits with Reverb do include the tanks though. Thanks!
It would help if there was a template or measurements to show where to drill the holes in the cab for mounting the chassis. You skipped over that part. Other than that a very good tutorial.
Thanks for a very useful video on the 5E3 build, in the future a little slower with more information instead of so rapid would be helpful, I will invest the time to watch this purely so I get the build correct on the first pass. Also the music in the background was cheesy and didn't contribute to knowing how this should work. Respect that you know your amps
Ok, the million dollar question, for all us Metal heads out there in TH-cam land...Can't this be modded to be a "high gain" amp. Are there different kits that would better suit the needs for someone like me wanting to get as close as I can to say a Marshall JCM 800 or 900, a Fortin amp, or a Soldano SLO...
I thought maybe I could build one of these kits at home? I have wired guitars and was once an Electro Mechanical Maintenance Technician at a Auto Factory. Loved your video but could not see a lot of what you were doing, either too small picture or to fast video. So. after watching you I have decided I could not.
The accompanying instrumental music just wears on you after awhile. What is this? Pseudo prog rock? Nothing is said about lead dress, it all blasts by in fast forward. You mention twisting the leads for the transformer to the rectifier, but that's only a part of the whole picture. At least you provide this, some companies (Weber) do not provide *anything* for assembling their amps.
Absolutely the worst background music i ve heard so far this year. There should be a prize awarded for that and a voting mechanism based on how much % of viewers disliked it on a scale from 0-10 for absolute fail.
I like the video but hate the music. Let's just keep to the subject without the annoying background noise. How suuccessful would you be teaching this to a class with all that noise going on ?

Cool kit. Odd music choice for a Tweed amp, hehe

Shout out to the super convenient swiveling chassis holder with attached fans at 12:50 making working inside that tight space significantly easier. 😉

Great little kit!
gotta try one of these builds.. working on some pedal projects first to build up the skillset a bit
We've got a couple of workshops coming up:
nashville.mi.edu/amplifier-building-workshop/
roberto-venn.com/specialty-classes/mojotone-tube-amp/
great vid., one complaint i had with a competitor's kit was the plastic tube sockets. Fortunately i was able to source some cermaic ones locally.
Very nice and helpful video! Thank you!😊❤️👍
I like getting the transformers all solidly wired in first. Then all the pots and jacks componented up . When all is done get the board in.
Very nice clean leads.
God bless you guys, this is awesome. Thank you guys!!
Great clean build! I can tell you've been at it for a while by the absence of too much wire in the chassis.
Is there a video walkthrough of the British 100w, I would love to see that!?

Nice kit indeed.
Doesn't get any better than that
Damn I was looking for the misinformed comments that say “don’t grab a tube with bare hands!” Lol but this community seems to be smarter
How long do you estimate it took you from start to finish.
Was that a hum balance wired to the indicator light?

Totally digging the background music. You should definitely give links / credit to the group!
Jorma Spaziano I don’t think the background music was recorded through a 5e3

So if you forget to plug a speaker into the output Wouldn’t this wiring of shorted jack damage Output Transformer?
I need video for the 6G15 clone!!! Please!!!
Ive wanted to build my own kit amp but i lost 90 percent of my eyesight and suck at soldering these days
whats the music @ 3:20
Do you have kits for sale to ship in the US? Post “pandemic”?
Hello, thanks for asking, yes we do! Visit www.mojotone.com to find what you're looking for.
Who's on the soudtrack?
'Utter Shite'. They got back together it seems.
where do you buy the kit

Can you mojotone assemble it for me?
Yes
