    Give welding a go and if at the end it’s still not fit to MOT at least you’ve learnt to weld.

      chris macleod I’ll give you that, but there is patching over and there’s fabricating metal parts and seam welding, but if you approach the job with the right attitude it can be rewarding, I remember my splatter and burn throughs but it came good with practice. And he has the perfect opportunity and I think he’ll make a good job of it.

      @@chrismacleod3947 I saw some Mercedes 'expert' in the USA fix holes in his car with fibreglass sheets & some fancy anti-rust paint (not available here)....so there are ways to bodge it that could 'probably' pass an MOT. It's good to see him willing to learn a new skill...and I wish him luck (& hope he has fun welding). I'm sure one of us subscribers will help him out if he hits a roadblock. Wouldn't be surprised if that underseal actually made it worse. People usually apply it when rust is allready there, and this is the nuclear bomb in rust from my experience, as the underseal traps moisture and the rust gets 1000 times worse. Had this on a second hand focus, and tought oh well...it was looked after. Untill I started flaking the underseal to find holes I could punch trough :))

    If you want a welder mate - i'd check out one of those Clarke ones in Machinemart. They seem ok for DIY use and they sell those small "hobby bottles" of gas. I'm sure RetroRestore uses one.
    Word of advice mate - some of these "underseal" products have the habit of trapping salt and moisture against the metal. So the underseal might look good on the outside but underneath it will be rusty as fuck. If you are going to strip everything off i'd go back to bare metal and paint with some sort of 2K epoxy or zinc based primer.
    I have a garage mate and its so cold i'm getting fed up of working in there! I'm actually treating the rust on my Toyota at the moment. Been grinding and sandblasting back to bare metal and painting it with Jotun 87 (its an epoxy primer/mastic) and i'm going to spray Dinatrol in the cavities.

    Why not sign up for a course in welding at your local college?

    • @TheFakeRussian
      @TheFakeRussian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because its worthless? It's like car/bike mechanics courses. They teach you how to be a fitter not build, manufacture and adapt. I 'aced' my MIG and even I think my MIG welding is messy but I failed my arc and I'm far more proficient with stick welding. Plus most tutors think oxy/Acet welding is gluing metals together. Plus the welders used in most colleges are a couple of grand a pop, they're nothing like MIG's most people would buy for £200 or £300

    • @TheFakeRussian
      @TheFakeRussian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheMentalblockrock I do a lot of fabricating in tool builds, it wasn't a skill I was taught it was trial and error. Besides James says he's selling the mini because he needs the money, why spend cash on a course when you can get every basic you need from TH-cam and put it into practice in your own time in your own workshop experimenting through trial and error? As with anything it's all down to practice, practice and more practice which can't be taught in a college. All you're doing it going to a place, (or paying to go to a place in the instance of a college course), to *practice* . Buying a few sheets of metal and using them to practice on is far cheaper than going to college.

      @@TheMentalblockrock You actually think college teaches you properly??? 😂😂😂😂😂 You're hilarious mate. My tutor was "teaching" us how to replace a clutch on a motorcycle and wonder why the bolt snapped when he torqued it up then I explained you have to partly torque *ALL* the bolts up in sequence turning up the torque wrench in increments as you go. Now this was a guy who worked for Ford, had been a tutor for 15+ years and didn't know this fundamental basic and he was supposed to be teaching us not me teaching him. It got to the point when the others got stuck they came to me for help and advice not the tutor yet he was being paid £90 an hour to teach the course.

    You've made the right decision to save it. It is the perfect opportunity to learn how to weld. This is a skill I need to improve on myself. I have a MIG welder and the use of a garage as well as a car that is need of welding (the Triumph Dolomite). Something you can do straight away is to cut out all that rust. The angle grinder is your friend. With a selection grinding wheels, cutting wheels, flap discs and a knotted wire wheel it will make short work of the rust. Once you're back to clean solid metal get some weld-through primer on to protect it.

    IF you can find a new floor pan, that would be best bet!!!! Because otherwise i can assure Rust will be back in the floor pan!!!! The thing with a rust hole is that it is at least twice the size you see, you need to cut out ALL bad metal ( discoloured ) around the hole, RUST NEVER SLEEPS, yes you can slow it down but the ONLY way to kill off is to cut ALL RUST OUT!!!!

    Avoid flux core welders - especially the A/C only ones. They take a huge amount of learning and even then blow holes far too easily in thin sheet. Get a decent AC/DC gas MIG (you will mostly use DC) and if it has TIG as well then all the better. Having started the learning curve I can say from experience that TIG is preferable once you get the hang of it. Watch Trevs Blog for tips and tricks ! Above all persevere - your first welds will be horrible but it gets better quick. Enjoy and good luck.

    When you rebuild the engine you can "index" the spark plugs.... It's basically where you get a permanent marker or tipex and Mark the "open" gap side of the plug... Then unscrew/screw them in until they're threaded so that the open gap roughly faces the intake valves...
    ....it helps ensure a clean burn (which might add 1 or 2 bhp) but more importantly means easier starting in the cold. 👌

  • @shona5512
    @shona5512 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure you've already been told by whoever is helping you get your welder. But when it comes to welding cars, make sure you use 0.8 mm wire otherwise you will burn through the steel non-stop.
    Also, as someone who's done rust repair on a few cars before.. Best thing you will ever do is getting underneath it sandblasted. You may as well do it while it's a bare shell. I wish I did it on my MK2 Golf before I started repairing the rust on the floorpan. It's best to get all the nasty surprises out of the way all at once and it will save you hours with a wire brush taking off underseal in preparation of welding it.

    Look into a company called Buzzweld for any coatings, I've used their products for a number of years. Their Rust Encapsulator and chassis in one paints are amazing

    It's quite strange regarding the "Male" psychie ! I've always had a desire to keep a car on the road. I have a 2005 alfa romeo 147, which against all odds, is a fantasticly reliable 15 year old car, and I spent some money having welding done for its MOT, I just couldn't part with it . Had the work done, and its absolutely perfect. Many people wouldn't waste a penny on an alfa, but I can say with honesty, that this car has never let me down, even on the coldest of mornings. Just fitted some leather seats, and I'm loving driving her !

    You will find you can blow holes right through the thin metal especially we’re it joins.
    So get a joggler panel tool on eBay and this will save so many hours of headaches.
    Just you tube the tool and you will se what I mean

    There's many a BMW E34 owner wishing they could take their side skirts off and see no rust... I'm one of them :( Good on you for saving this car and your positive attitude, and for learning to weld!

    Practice on the fiesta. Welding inst hard just need good preparation unless you are welding above you :-). Make sure u cut out to good metal dont try to weld on rusty surface!. If you make a mistake just cut it out / grind it off and go again. Get some flap discs for your grinder. Get a 200A + Mig or TIG.

    Strip the car completely and manufacture a roll over jig. www.rolloverjigs.com/ use the idea from the website to make your own. Absolutely the best aid for welding. Good luck!

    I haven't watched the full video yet James! (If I'm wrong I'll edit this comment) A Arc/stick welder wouldn't be very difficult to use on the car, a MIG welder would be best to use but don't get a gas-less MIG the welds are basically made of cheese!

    Have a look at Pete C's you tube channel ( Cortina restoration), he has a whole library of videos which cover Welding, Fabrication and a lot more. Different car but the principle is the same. He is really knowledgeable, might be worth reaching out and get some advice.

    I have two mig welders. of the two I much prefer the one that takes a Co2/Argon mix gas bottle, Although you can get away with using just a Co2 bottle, I got my large one from a mate that runs a pub & lasts for ages !,,,,,,,,,,,,,, The gas-less one i find a bit awkward to seam weld with no matter how I have the settings. Hope this helps. Oh & be prepared for little holes to become big holes by the time you clean it all up !.

    Good luck james, try and see if you can get a night course at your local college in welding as its always a bonus. Its about time you got a couple of sponsors to help fund your channel as rebuilding the fiesta is going to cost you a small fortune. Especially the welding machine, I'm hoping someone see's this who reps for the big names in welding industry and approaches you and help fund your project. Get a pull out gazebo, allot of car detailers use them during this kind of weather and get a good quality one , ask around the car detailers on TH-cam, OCD details has bought one recently and its five minutes to put up .
    Get the fiests under cover with tiapauline and bungie ropes , but before you do . Try and get a dry day wash the car and then once dry give it a couple coats of wax , this will help protect the paint and slow down any more deterioration . Spray the interior exposed metal with any good rust preventing paint so it helps give it a barrier during the winter . Sounds a bit mad , but it will be a safe precaution. My dad this to his Mk3 Ford Transit LWB Van in the late 80's and it lasted through to 1996 , before he had to do any welding.
    Hope this helps. Good luck mate 🤞😉

    Can you get a welding equipment supplier to 'donate' some semi-professional equipment...you can then show idiots like us how to use their equipment to weld our cars too. Good luck...hope you have fun.

    Hi buddy, im in the EXACT same place but with a Mk 4 and im a lot older so cold is my worst enemy! My only guidance is learn to stick weld before you start mig or tig, Get yourself a cheap little MMA stick welder and have some fun before you plunge into the more expensive side of welding

    I welded rust damage, without any experience what so ever, on an old Volvo 745 that was basically just waiting for the scrap yard. Floors, spare wheel, wheel archs, frame, rocker panel, engine bay, you name it. It passed inspection and I even got praise from the inspector. Kinda scary at first when you read about fire and what not but it's just like putting legos together. Hardest thing in the beginning is to learn how to bend the metal to fit the rust damaged area and learning how the weld works so that you don't burn through and other issues, and most of all, thinking positive thoughts because it'll get boring very quickly and feels like it'll never end haha.

    get your self a ''gas mig'' and you will learn very easy ,just clean/sand back to clean metal everything all the rust paint oil ect and you wont go wrong mig is the easiest if your clean gas mig doesnt like contamination at all it will cause porosity like a aero chocolate bar bubbles and makes the weld very weak and would a failed test,, i would say go and do a short corse you wont regret it and because you are doing cars its best to know the correct safe way and for its MOT ;-)

    The best decision James. These cars are getting rarer and need saving. I have done a bit of welding many years ago, I was given the task of welding up the floor of an old MK2 Transit, I was quite proud of my achievement.So never say never, be patient and do it properly. You will look back at this car in years to come and say " I saved that from the scrapper".

    Why not continue with the learning curve, if you love working on cars then why not? Like you say learning to weld leads to other things. Some are buying smashed up cars from Coparts at a bargain price, fixing them up mechanically or bodily, then either keeping them or making a profit selling them on. Job satisfaction putting an unroadworthy car back on the road.

    I just recently taught myself to weld. One of the front subframe bolts on my mk3 mondeo started spinning, had to cut the front chassis leg open to get at it. I was absolutley shitting myself to cut it. now she's welded up an passed MOT. If im honest i thought you were gonna scap it. So happy to hear you'll be giving it a go. Wish you the best of luck.

    Nice one learning to weld first lesson for you. Welding causes sparks and heat your shed is wood and has a sofa and other combustible things. BAD IDEA learning in shed the sparks could smoulder . Shame your not more local to me couple hours and i would have you welding.

    I just punched a hole in my Fiesta while attempting to clean up the Vin number. Why on earth did they put in I'm the floor where the lowest point is. I can't simply weld the floor because of that number.... 😕
