    I saw this lovely engine at the Great Dorset Steam Fair 2012, a really nice example of how something that doesn't appear pristine really is a piece of engineering prowess.

    It's incredible to think that these 100+ year old machines still have enough torque to pull down a building by itself. They only have a few horsepower but unprecedented amounts of torque.

      Torque and traction pulls things. That old steam tractor may not be fast but it will drag that sled wherever the operator wants to take it and it won't give a shit what's in its way.

    steam traction engines are incredibly powerful, and have tons of torque. it's the nature of steam engines that they develop full torque more or less once the engine starts turning, unlike an internal combustion engine.

    A nice pull from a lovely little engine. The front end lifted because the drawbar is too high- it should be below the rear axle instead of even with it.
    Still, steam power is amazing. A fraction of the power of her modern equivalent, and this little engine scores very nearly a full pull without one bit of wheel slip.

    • @jpsholland
      @jpsholland 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think what people call power is wrong. "We" are very biassed to horsepower and tend to forget the torque. But power is always a combination between this two.
      The horsepower of the old steam tractor compared to all that mechanic muscles which were competing that day is probably next to nothing. But the torque will be probably equal to all of them.
      Result: she only need a little more time, but get the job done. And full pulls are stil rare among the mechanic muscles. But not for steam.

    • @renegadeoflife87
      @renegadeoflife87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jpsholland While pulling with steam I had one sled operator tell me he was worried I was going to rip his sled apart. So just for him I loosened the engine's clutch, that way it would slip before damaging the sled.
      I actually have had a sled stop the steamer for real. It took the big Lucas branded sled that the mack truck cabs pull to do it. We got to 200 yards and the sled's emergency brakes kicked on. I was at full throttle in the corner notch, Puff puff nope. The only time they've ever actually stalled me.

    One of the great advantages of a steam engine is that it does not "stall" like a diesel or a gasoline engine (meaning, it does not turn off when stopped). The steam is still applying pressure to the piston even if the weight is too great for the power given: the engine is still "on."
    The disadvantages, of course, are the weight, the inefficiency of the machine, the fact that it has to get up to steam to operate (same problem that plagued the Stanley Steamer). But still a simple machine.

      From what I'm seeing, toon to be replaced by electric

    • @ziiofswe
      @ziiofswe 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Both steam engines and electric motors share some properties...
      From what I've read, electrical motors are most powerful at their lowest rpm's (or maybe even a standstill?)
      From what I've read, it's the same with steam engines?
      higher steam pressure = higher voltage
      Larger steam flow (larger pipes and valves) = higher current (thicker wires etc)
      So which is more powerful comes down to how well you build it and feed it.

    • @ziiofswe
      @ziiofswe 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thedeoradude
      The properties of steam engines depend quite a bit on being able to manipulate the timing and duration of the valves, or at least that's how I understand it... I might be wrong.
      So I'm guessing with adjustable timing of the electric motors there should be possibilities for better high rpm power too. Perhaps they already do that, I'm not THAT much into electrical motors. They have their advantages but are a lot more boring than steam. :P

      Reminder that steam power is used not just in these (beautiful) old beasts, but also in things like nuclear power stations. Where the heat comes from isn't important; steam is POWERFUL.

  • @renegadeoflife87
    @renegadeoflife87 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Steam engines have an absolutely incredible low end torque as long as you can keep the engine from getting stuck on top or bottom dead center- which that huge flywheel they use does a number to avoid.
    I like how this engine is like "relax I got this." Typical of steam technology, capable of pulling loads far beyond it's ratings. And with the mass of the boiler holding the front end down, it was barely starting to rock the front end up.

      It's hard to stall out when your engine makes more and more torque the slower it turns. Steam engine peak torque is around 2-3RPM, really only just fast enough to be considered turning in the first place, since they feed from a constant source of pressure rather than a pulse of burning fuel.
      Steam train locomotives were often far too powerful for their own good. They were great at holding speed, but they made so much torque that actually getting started from a dead stop required quite a lot of attention on the part of the engineer lest it just spin the wheels and ruin them/the track. Burnouts with steam locomotives are incredibly easy to do.

  • @hiyadroogs
    @hiyadroogs 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @doubleboost Close, but no cigar! At half stroke when stationary maximum torque is being produced, but no power. Bhp is a product of torque & revs. So, for example, a steam loco can exert 100,000 ft/lbs of torque on its driving wheels to start a 1000 ton train on the move, but until those big old driving wheels start revolving, however slowly, not a single bhp is being produced. So 10,514 ft/lbs @ 50 rpm = 100 bhp. So does 105 ft/lbs @ 5000 rpm, or 52.5 ft/lbs @ 10,000 rpm.

    These ole' steam engines are really neat. They don't make much horsepower. The most powerful steam engines maxed out in the 100-150 hps range, on the low end hps could be in the low to mid teens, but they have an insane amount of torque. 900+ foot pounds for even the smallest tractors, the biggest ones would make multiple thousands of foot pounds.
    Much more than the diesel engines normally used in tractor pulling. When I first heard about tractor pulling I had wondered someone didn't try using a steam engine. I know why they aren't common, nobody makes steam engines anymore, and for that matter nobody even makes parts for steam engines. But still, I had wondered why somebody hasn't at least tried. Well, turns out they had, and turns out it works pretty damn well. If you'll notice even when the sled was all the way down the tractor was still pulling, slowly but surely. Other than taking over two minutes to go 500 feet (maybe), if given the time and clearance, that tractor would've pulled that sled for miles.

    bestial el torque de este tractor, es impresionante realmente el poder del vapor!
    The torque of this tractor is beastly, the power of the steam is truly impressive!

    Full pull with basic equipment. .. more impressive than the "fire breathing" big rigs of today...!

    Geothermal heat is awesome, too, where available. Iceland doesn't even charge individuals for electricity they have such an abundance of electricity. It's even worthwhile for companies to ship ore from Australia to make aluminum there.

    No matter how far technology goes... damn I just love steam machines. They are so complex and powerfull. If we only had some other kind of fuel to make steam...

    It was a no contest from the start..
    But that poor old engine badly needs some love.
    It looks like it's never had an ounce of it, or a drop of oil- throughout her entire working life.
    I would love to have a look round on the farm- or wherever she was discovered... as I bet there were many more gems tucked away!

    So much for all this modern diesel crap! Steam is the way forward! That engine would carry on through the trees if it wanted too!
