      If it had rubberised grips on the wheels, it would have either;
      A) Pulled it a lot easier.
      Or B) dug a hole into the ground.
      Either way, that's a lot of power.

      An equivalent farm tractor would make this look so easy. Considering how much they weigh, with some actual treads there would be no wheel spin at all.

      @@skylark6167 what do you mean by equivalent farm tractor? If they were equal in everything then it would literally be a steam engine. if it were equal in most things except when it was made then it would perform exactly the same. If we are talking equal in torque then it would perform better, given the weight and tires. if we are talking equivalent horsepower then there ain't no way in heck that a gas engine would pull as hard as the steam engine does

    I wonder if the steam engines could be improved upon in any way in a modern version? One thing I would do and I'm not even experienced at Steam! That could improve power in that is Gear Up the flywheel so it is spinning at a faster speed! And with that big heavy Flywheel spinning at more RPM even at almost stall it would help keep it moving forward always! Especially through the heavy load. Where it's bearing hard on the piston where she seems she's giving out the RPM of the flywheel at faster speeds would carry it through those lulls:-) now what does somebody think of my idea?. They could have a gear cluster on the main flywheel to control the speed of it at other situations

    I don't get it! Smooth driving wheels, by nature of what it is, yet it still managed to pull that hefty sled a good way up the pitch. I know about steam engine torque and power-to-weight ratios, but the old girl's performance is still astounding!

      That "front wheel" weighs more than your car.

    If that engine's about 40HP / 30kW, and the back wheels are turning at about 5RPM, the torque is about 42,250 pound-feet / 57,300 Newton-metres..... on slick steel 'tyres'! (Torque N-m = (60 x P watts) / (2 x Pi x N rpm)

    Modern Era: 3200hp and 3400lb-ft torque at 4500rpm. $150k
    Good Old Days: 150hp and 3500lb-ft torque at 250rpm. $3600
    *I'll take the steam engine*

    I betcha if it rained just a little bit that would put an end I wonder how they worked in muddy Fields these heavy Steamroller machines and how many of them are still buried under the ground it sunk and dug themselves in and they could never get them out? I started to read an article in Wisconsin about buried smokestacks but it wanted me to email up and do cookies and I just quit reading it. I don't know much about it but I was raised on a farm just imagine your steam tractor getting buried in a wet spot in the field in a low area and then having it flood with water and not be able to start it up and fire it up so that even with the help of teams of horses and maybe another steam tractor there's no way you could get it out ever so they just left it there very sad indeed but I think this is true anybody know any history?
